Heron Wolf Civil & Infrastructure Scholarship
As I advance in my Civil Engineering journey, the pressing realization of our world's need for innovative ideas and fresh minds to address critical issues becomes increasingly evident. My passion for transportation has been ingrained in me since my early years, as I explored the intricacies of the roads surrounding me. Throughout my academic endeavors, I've demonstrated effective leadership through my role as the Vice Team manager for Michigan State University's Concrete Canoe Team, which was brought back to life in 2024. This experience not only resulted in increased interests from students across the Civil major, but also helped teach valuable lessons on concrete mix and mold design necessary to be successful within the guidelines. My educational background, coupled with personal experiences, has provided me with a robust foundation for contemplating solutions to the challenges faced by Michigan drivers. In the short term post-graduation, my goal is to secure an analytical position focused on planning highway and freeway roads. I aim to implement solutions that alleviate traffic congestion and enhance productivity around construction-heavy areas. However, my aspirations extend beyond the immediate future, as I envision leadership roles in the industry. My ultimate aim is to contribute to the development of innovative, eco-friendly solutions in road construction, with a specific interest in advocating for the broader use of permeable pavement to benefit drivers and the environment. Embarking on the journey towards any personal and professional goals is an adventure fraught with challenges. In my academic and personal journey towards pursuing civil engineering, I have encountered various challenges that have significantly shaped my determination to succeed in this competitive field. One notable obstacle has been the demanding nature of the coursework, notably in the math and science related fields. Childhood food insecurity remains a pervasive global issue, adversely affecting millions of children and hindering their physical, emotional, and cognitive development. As an advocate committed to addressing this urgent problem, my research into child food insecurity has not only deepened my understanding of the issue but has also empowered me to contribute meaningfully to the fight against hunger. Research has played a pivotal role in enhancing my comprehension of the multifaceted nature of child food insecurity. Through extensive literature reviews, interviews, and data analysis, I have delved into the root causes, consequences, and prevalence of this issue. During my time at Grosse Pointe North High School, I was able to independently research the many causes and effects of child, and speciality teenage food insecurity. The results were simply heartbreaking. Study after study reported that many children dropped out of school, sold drugs, or engaged in sexual favors just to make ends meet for them and their siblings. Semi-annually for many years I had the chance to participate in packaging snack bags for kids in the Detroit Public School System (DPPS) that they can take home and eat throughout the week. Many of those who benefit from these types of programs come throughout the summer to receive food because their homes don’t have refrigerators. We donated and packaged juice boxes, raisins, protein bars, apple sauce, napkins, and spoons to give to a nonprofit organization known as Snack Pax, where they distribute food to over 400 children a week. Even though I had done this a few times, its importance came to me this year because the people we were helping were so close to home. They were within miles of us, and yet they lived drastically different lives. It was particularly difficult to come to terms with the fact that the little amounts of food we put together would be such a large aid to so many children our own age. Their lives and futures were defined by the level of poverty and hunger they lived in. Hunger in adults, children, and especially teenagers is something that has to take the center stage. The profound insights gained from my research have laid the groundwork for informed and effective strategies. My journey into researching child food insecurity has been transformative on a personal level. Witnessing the harsh realities faced by many children in my home city of Detroit has fueled my determination to make a difference. As I interact with affected communities through volunteer opportunities throughout my life, aided by my girl scout troop, the desire to make a lasting change burns hotter within me. My research into child food insecurity has not only broadened my understanding of the issue but has also propelled me into action. From community engagement to advocacy, my efforts are directed towards creating a sustainable and positive impact on the lives of children facing food insecurity. As I continue on this journey, I am inspired by the belief that every small action contributes to a collective effort in the fight against hunger, ultimately paving the way for a brighter and more nourished future for our children.

Aspiring Musician Scholarship
The room bubbled with excitement, smelling of fresh cane wood reeds and cork from our shiny instruments. This was the day I had been waiting for: fifth-grade music class. I didn’t know it yet, but that fateful day would set me on a seven-year journey, learning what music was to me and how it would shape the many avenues of my life.
While I’ve since graduated from the humble clarinet, moving on to my noble bassoon, I’ll never forget the feeling of excitement that existed each time we sat down to learn something new. I still have that pleasure now in my high school band room, learning more complex rhythms and concepts. When I began, every day was a new experience, navigating how to make sounds on pieces of wood that felt foreign, and yet I persevered. Recently, I was able to play on one of the greatest stages in Michigan, Orchestra Hall, playing a contemporary piece so impactful, audience members were moved to tears. The piece, “Of Our New Day Begun” by Ohmar Thomas was commemorated for the Charleston Church Massacre on June 17th, 2015, which resulted in the death of nine black worshippers in their church. Its significance towered over us, demanding that we perform the piece with our heart and soul, delivering our best performance on that stage. It had the beauty of reigniting my love for music, and especially the emotion we give it the power to invoke.
Many other influential events in my life have resulted from my connection and passion for music. In the past year, I was called upon to perform with the Ferndale Community Band. As I sat with them, I was able to take in the subtle fact that all of those members, retired or still teaching, took hours of their week to show up and make music with other people who loved it just as much. It was a beautiful reminder that music lives through us, all that we must do is let it be seen, and it will bring us joy.
By far my most prominent journey in music has been through Marching band. After a 40-year hiatus, my freshman year marked its return into the world. By my senior year, I was named one of three Drum Majors, tasked with leading and serving the band in every capacity, from running Band camp to running drill and music rehearsals. Certainly, this year as each performance marked the beginning of the end for me, I was able to realize that serving others, in this capacity and in all others was my true calling in life. To be able to entertain, assist, and provide for those around me through music and my skills, I experienced how music changes lives, one note at a time.
