Originally from Tanzania, I moved to America with my family in 2024 in pursuit of better opportunities and a brighter future. I am currently enrolled in the Regents' Engineering Pathway Program (REPP) and look forward to transferring to Georgia Tech to pursue my studies in aerospace engineering. Growing up with a stutter, I was easily underestimated; a classmate once calmly told me to my face that he thought I was dumb. That quiet resilience became my anchor when my family moved to the U.S. Witnessing my parents’ intense daily hustle instilled a deep work ethic in me, but entering college as the only Black woman in my classes brought a new wave of isolation. Instead of retreating, I pushed through the discomfort to build genuine, wonderful connections. My dad always says, 'Change is hard at first, messy around the middle, and gorgeous at the end.' My life has been proof of that. Navigating the pressures of being a first-born daughter while adapting to a completely new culture has shaped my ultimate purpose. I don't just want to succeed individually; I want to be the steady mentor and guide that I deeply wished I had when I was trying to find my own way.
    Teria Onwuaduegbo Black Women in STEM Scholarship
    My fascination with aviation didn't start from a comfortable window seat on a vacation; it started with a mystery. During my freshman year of college, I found myself deep in a research rabbit hole looking into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. While everyone else was caught up in the wild conspiracy theories online, I got completely hooked on the actual engineering of the plane. Learning about flight data recorders how these literal "black boxes" are designed to survive absolutely anything just to protect the truth of a flight was a massive turning point for me. It made me realize what systems engineering really is: the heavy responsibility of designing interconnected networks that keep people safe at 35,000 feet. That initial curiosity quickly turned into a real career goal. Over the last year, it felt like every time you turned on the news, there was another scary aviation headline making people anxious about flying. But if you actually look at the data, air transport is still incredibly safe. That contrast is exactly why I want to dive into systems engineering, specifically focusing on advanced fault detection. I want to build and perfect the kind of smart, resilient systems that can catch a glitch and stop a failure before it even happens, keeping the public's trust in aviation rock-solid. I couldn’t stop questioning how an aircraft equipped with advanced technology could just vanish, leaving the world with unanswered questions. I realized that while aviation is one of humanity's greatest achievements, it is still far from flawless. I chose this field because I want to make air travel safer, ensuring that no family is ever left in the dark without answers about their loved ones. More importantly, I want to help build a future where we don’t just analyze tragedies after they happen, but actively prevent them through smarter systems. As a sophomore at the University of North Georgia, I am working toward this goal every single day. After moving from Africa to the United States in 2024, I faced the massive challenge of adapting to a completely new academic and cultural system while diving into a heavy STEM course load. In many of my advanced Calculus and Computer Science classes, I am the only Black woman in the room. It can feel incredibly isolating, and that weight is definitely heavier when you're navigating a new environment with a stutter and an accent. There are absolutely moments when missing home feels overwhelming. However, these challenges haven't stopped me—they’ve forced me to build real resilience and self-confidence. I’ve learned to advocate for myself, speak up even when it feels uncomfortable, and push forward through obstacles. These daily struggles aren't barriers anymore; they are the exact preparation I need for the high-stakes demands of the aerospace industry. My short-term goal is to transfer to Georgia Tech to pursue a combined BS/MS in Aerospace Engineering. Long-term, my goal is to earn a PhD and join the incredibly small percentage of Black women who hold doctorates in this field. I want to focus my research on developing real-time diagnostic systems that can catch mechanical and material faults in aircraft before they become critical, using predictive data to save lives. Being an underrepresented minority has completely shaped these goals. The lack of representation in aerospace is a quiet isolation I feel every week, but it serves as my fuel. My educational journey is the vehicle for this impact. I am currently in university with my sights set on transferring to Georgia Tech to pursue my aerospace engineering degree. Eventually, I enrolled in college, but the tuition was so high that my dad even considered having me take a gap year just to work. I chose to answer through action. I entered a national math competition and eventually ranked among the top performers out of 200 students. That experience taught me to "wear my crown" to own my intellect and my worth, regardless of how others perceived my outward challenges. But drawing on the same "quiet force" that carried me through high school, I began to put myself out there. Encouraged by my professors, I built a community of friends and peers. I realized that my presence in these spaces isn’t just for me; it is a signal to other women of color that we belong in the rooms where the future is designed. My plan is to transfer to the Georgia Institute of Technology to earn my BS/MS in Aerospace Engineering, followed by a PhD.     I first became interested in engineering through both my academic strengths and my environment growing up. In high school, I consistently performed well in physics, chemistry, and mathematics. These were the subjects that made the most sense to me, and over time I realized that my strengths aligned naturally with engineering. By the end of high school, I knew this was the path I wanted to pursue. Beyond academics, my parents played a major role in shaping my interest in engineering. My father is an electrical engineer, and my mother works in telecommunications. Watching my dad install CCTV systems and other security devices at home sparked my curiosity about how systems work. I would often help him in small ways, especially with wiring, which gave me early exposure to hands-on problem-solving. My mother also introduced me to her work environment, where I saw communication towers and satellite systems. Seeing both of my parents apply engineering in real life made the field feel practical, impactful, and achievable, and it motivated me to follow a similar path. In my freshman year of college, I further explored my interest in engineering through research. I wrote a research paper on the Malaysian flight disappearance, analyzing possible causes and system failures. This project deepened my interest in aerospace engineering, particularly in aircraft systems and safety. Learning about aviation incidents, including other system failures such as recent plane accidents, has motivated me to pursue a role where I can contribute to improving the safety and reliability of air travel. I am currently a sophomore in the REPP (Regents’ Engineering Pathway Program), which is helping me build a strong academic foundation before transferring to Georgia Tech to pursue aerospace engineering. Through this program, I am gaining hands on experience in chemistry and physics labs, including my current coursework in Chemistry 1212, where I am studying concepts such as solubility equilibria (Ksp), neutralization reactions, and electrolysis. I also plan to take physics courses over the summer and fall to further strengthen my preparation. While I have not yet participated in a formal co-op, I am actively preparing to do so in the future. I am particularly interested in co-op opportunities with companies such as Delta Air Lines or Lockheed Martin, where I can gain real-world engineering experience. At Georgia Tech, I also plan to join aerospace focused organizations and participate in research opportunities to continue developing my technical skills.     Growing up, I was always fascinated by airplanes. Sitting by the window during flights with my family, I would look out and wonder how something so large and heavy could stay in the air, carrying people and luggage across countries and continents. That curiosity stayed with me, and over time, it grew into a passion. As Albert Einstein once said, “The important thing is not to stop questioning.” That mindset is what led me to pursue a future in STEM. My name is Grace Japahri, and I am currently a sophomore at the University of North Georgia in the REPP program, with plans to transfer to Georgia Tech to pursue a BS/MS in aerospace engineering. I was born in Tanzania and moved to the United States in 2024 with my family. That transition had a huge impact on my life. Being miles away from home, adjusting to a new culture, language, and way of life was a complete shock at first. Everything felt unfamiliar. At the same time, I had to grow up quickly—balancing school, work, and new responsibilities that were very different from what I was used to back home. Even though the transition was difficult, it shaped me into a stronger and more hardworking person. I learned how to adapt, stay disciplined, and appreciate the opportunities in front of me. My family has made many sacrifices to be here. My mom works two jobs, my dad has continued working after undergoing heart surgery, and I juggle both school and work to help support us while continuing my education. These challenges have not discouraged me—they have motivated me to keep pushing forward. My passion for STEM became clearer in high school through my math, physics, and chemistry classes. I was fortunate to have teachers who believed in me and constantly encouraged me to do my best. Their support helped me realize that I was capable of succeeding in a challenging field.     Education is a potent instrument yet in my case it has also been the source of guidance, stability and hope. I cannot say that when I went to the United States only a year ago I did not realize to what extent my educational path and further life was going to be shaped. It was all new in the beginning language, culture, expectations, pace of life. I was nineteen, new country, trying to discover myself not to mention I was also trying to make a life out of nothing. However, school was the only place I found clarity though I was confused and under pressure. It demonstrated to me my natural strengths, what I liked and what I was interested in fulfilling in the long run. My classes (mostly in science and math) helped me to understand that I am more of a STEM student, and that my inquisitiveness found a home in this world. The finding was the first sure step towards an extremely uncertain year. It has not been easy to adapt to America. I needed to study all simultaneously how to cope in school, how I could get employment, how to take care of myself, and how I could comprehend a culture that at least was quicker than anything I had been acquainted with. I had four various jobs in the first year of my stay and changed the jobs every other time I required more time or higher wages. Each work experience taught me something new regarding people, responsibility and adulthood. I would be going to work and school and school and work, and at one time even fail to notice how exhausted I was, until I sat down at the end of the day. Yet those days were long, and made me stronger. They made me mature at a young age, and become self-reliant, and believe that my dreams were worth the suffering. College turned out to be a turning point. I began my first semester and I could finally feel like I was doing something that concerned me- that would bring me directly to my future. Although my courses were challenging and it was too much to juggle, I was determined to do so because I understood the importance of the education that I was getting. I made it through my first semester with a sense of pride; and not because it was smooth sailing, but because I was able to never give up because it seemed that everything was pressing me. That was a lesson that proved what I already knew, the fruits of education are worth sacrificing. Learning opens the doors that even hard work cannot open, even on those days when one needs to rest, even on those days when life is heavy. I am currently studying aerospace, which is the field that makes people stretch the boundaries of human knowledge and makes them think out of the box. The thought of contributing to something that will not only develop technology but also assist in the future moves me and it inspires me to continue with the education despite the complications in life beyond the classroom. And living has been made a hassle. My father underwent heart surgery some time back and we are yet to come to terms with it financially and emotionally. Watching my mother go through two jobs and my dad go through the long hours even when his health is not in the best shape has altered my perspectives in regards to my schooling. It is because their sacrifices drive me to work harder not because I am pressured but rather because I love them. I would like to apply my education to make a more positive future not only to myself but also to my parents and siblings. I would like to see them relax, sleep more, and in the end have stability that they have been struggling to achieve since we got here. I have learned that life is not necessarily about pushing oneself despite all the stress. You need to pause every now and then in the frenzy of the chasing and just see the little things as the flying by of butterflies, the family time time and just the little things of remembering that surviving is not all that life is about and that it is also about happiness. But what really pulled me in deeper was something most people avoid—researching plane crashes. I would find myself reading reports, watching documentaries, and digging into the causes behind these tragedies. Not out of fear, but out of curiosity and the desire to understand why they happened. I wanted to know how they could have been prevented. That deep interest in both the brilliance and the failures of aviation is what drove me to choose this major. I don’t just want to admire planes from a distance—I want to help make them safer, smarter, and better designed. As someone who moved to the U.S. from Tanzania with my family, this entire journey means more to me than I can express. It hasn’t been easy. My parents were successful professionals back home—my mom was an engineer and has worked hard to start over here. Watching her make sacrifices while still holding on to her dreams inspires me every single day. She’s my biggest role model. Even now, she’s thinking of going back into engineering or pursuing pharmacy, proving to me that it’s never too late to keep growing. For me, balancing school and life in a new country has come with a lot of pressure. I’m currently working, saving up for school supplies, and helping out at home where I can. There are times it gets overwhelming, but I’m committed to my education. I know I’m capable of achieving great things—and I believe that every step, no matter how hard, is part of a bigger purpose. Receiving this scholarship would mean so much. It would take some of the weight off my family’s shoulders and allow me to focus more on what truly matters—learning, growing, and preparing for my future.     One of the most challenging moments in my life happened during high school in my home country, Tanzania. I was attending a boarding school, and everything revolved around one major goal—preparing for the national exams. These exams were everything. The pressure to perform well and earn a Division 1 score, ideally a 1.7 or better, was intense. Everyone around me seemed to be locked into study mode 24/7, and I felt like I had to push myself beyond my limits just to keep up. At the same time, I was trying to stay grounded in other areas of life. I wanted to grow socially, stay active, and most importantly, continue growing in my faith. But trying to juggle it all in that high-pressure environment began to take a toll on me. I felt mentally exhausted, emotionally overwhelmed, and physically drained. I didn’t know it then, but I was experiencing burnout. What helped me was the decision to pause and take a step back. I reminded myself of how far I had already come and how much effort I had put in. Instead of constantly stressing over what I hadn’t done, I started to appreciate what I had achieved. I began giving myself grace—not just as a student, but as a human being doing her best. That small mental shift made a big difference. Spiritually, I leaned more into my faith. I started praying more often and found myself spending quiet moments talking to God, especially when I felt overwhelmed. Those moments gave me peace and reminded me I wasn’t alone. My relationship with God grew stronger—not because things magically got easier, but because I stopped trying to carry it all by myself. Trusting God helped me feel more grounded and gave me the strength to keep going, even on hard days. That season of my life taught me a valuable lesson: health—whether mental, emotional, or spiritual—is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. When I later moved to the U.S. and started college, I carried that mindset with me.     My name is Grace, and I am a Tanzanian-American student pursuing aerospace engineering. My passion for aviation began during a simple walk home from church. A neighbor who also attended our church asked me what type of engineering I wanted to study. At the time, I wasn’t sure what path to take, but she suggested I explore aircraft engineering. I believe this was a sign from God because from that moment, I became deeply fascinated by how aircraft fly and how they are designed. This curiosity quickly grew into a true passion, inspiring me to dedicate myself to studying aerospace engineering and learning everything I can about flight, design, and safety. Growing up in Tanzania, I had many opportunities to practice leadership in small but meaningful ways. For four years, I served as a group leader in my class, where I worked to create a safe and trusting environment. Many classmates felt comfortable confiding in me, knowing I would listen without judgment and support them through challenges. I have always believed that leadership isn’t about having a title or speaking the loudest — it’s about being reliable and empathetic to others. Alongside this, I regularly brought snacks to children in Sunday school at my church and donated books to kids in need before moving to the United States. These simple acts of kindness taught me that leadership is also about caring for your community and helping others whenever possible. Since moving to the United States in 2024, I have continued to seek out ways to grow and contribute. I have joined clubs such as the Black Student Union and the Asian Student Association on campus, participating in events that celebrate diversity and foster inclusion. These experiences have helped me develop my confidence and broaden my understanding of different cultures, while also allowing me to build connections with others who share similar goals.     Growing up in Tanzania, I was taught that you don’t need to have a lot to make a difference — sometimes, it’s the small acts of kindness that leave the biggest impact. I’ve always believed in giving back, even in ways that might seem simple to others. Whether it was leading, supporting, or just being there for someone, I’ve always tried to be a light in someone else’s day. For four years, I served as a group leader in my class, and through that experience, I learned how to listen, guide, and create a safe space for others. I was the kind of person people came to not just for help with schoolwork, but with their feelings. I’ve always had people tell me that they feel comfortable opening up to me — that I’m someone they can trust. I don’t take that lightly. Being someone others feel safe around has been one of my quietest but most meaningful contributions. At church, I used to bring buns for the children in Sunday school, especially those who didn’t always have a snack to look forward to. It may seem small, but seeing the joy on their faces made me realize that giving doesn’t have to be grand to matter. Before I moved to the United States, I also donated books to kids who needed them — a gesture that felt deeply personal because education has always been so important to me. Even though I’m still building my life here, I know that being present, showing up, and encouraging others in small ways continues to matter. I might not have started a huge organization or funded a big project, but I’ve always led with my heart.     I come from a family full of hope, determination, and big dreams. I was born and raised in Tanzania, where life wasn’t always easy, but it was filled with love, community, and the belief that education could open doors to something greater. My parents were the kind of people who worked tirelessly, not just to provide for us, but to show us that we could dream beyond what we saw around us. My mom was an engineer back home, a strong woman in a male-dominated field, and even though I didn’t fully understand it at the time, seeing her in that role planted a seed in me that would later grow into my passion for STEM. In 2024, we made one of the hardest and bravest decisions of our lives — we left everything we knew behind and moved to the United States. My parents gave up their careers, our family left behind our culture, language, and the comfort of familiarity, all for the chance at better opportunities. It was not an easy transition. Starting over in a new country, especially as an immigrant family, came with challenges I never could’ve imagined. But we held on to faith, to each other, and our dreams. My mom, despite her experience as a telecom engineer, began working as a CNA to support us while adjusting to life here. My dad worked long hours, taking whatever jobs he could find to help us stay afloat. I watched them give everything without complaint, and that lit a fire in me to work even harder. I knew I couldn’t waste the sacrifices they were making. That’s when I truly began to understand the weight and the power of my education, not just for myself, but for my whole family. As a new permanent resident, I quickly learned that while the U.S. offers opportunities, it also comes with financial obstacles, especially when it comes to college. I currently receive the Pell Grant and have taken out student loans, but it’s still not enough to cover all my tuition, books, transportation, and basic living needs. I’m not eligible for the HOPE Scholarship yet, since I haven’t been a Georgia resident for the full two years required. That means that, even though I’ve lived here legally since September 2023 and attend the University of North Georgia, I still don’t qualify for the same financial support as some of my classmates. The truth is, paying for college has been a struggle. My parents help in every way they can, but with younger siblings and bills piling up, there’s only so much they can do. I’ve had to say no to activities, skip meals to save money, and stress constantly about how we’ll afford the next semester. There have been nights I’ve broken down crying — not because I wanted to give up, but because I’ve been carrying so much pressure, knowing how badly I want this and how hard it is to get there. Still, I’ve never let my circumstances define me. Instead, they’ve made me more determined. Through all the struggles, one thing has remained consistent: my passion for aerospace engineering. Ever since I was little, I’ve been fascinated by flight — by the way something so heavy could rise into the air and move with such grace and power. It started as a childhood curiosity, but now it’s my calling. I want to design aircraft that are safer, more efficient, and more sustainable. I want to be a part of solving real-world problems, like improving aviation safety and reducing the environmental impact of air travel. One moment that solidified my passion was when I researched the disappearance of Malaysian Flight MH370. I dove deep into aviation systems, satellite tracking, and international aviation responses. Learning how technology, design, and communication systems all play a role in the safety of flights opened my eyes to how vital this field is — and how much more we can still improve. It made me realize I don’t just want to study aerospace engineering — I want to contribute to making air travel safer and smarter for everyone. Being a young Black woman and an immigrant in engineering means I often walk into classrooms and spaces where I don’t see many people who look like me. That used to make me feel out of place, but now I wear it with pride. I’m not just doing this for myself — I’m doing it for every girl who’s been told she’s not smart enough for STEM, for every immigrant who’s been underestimated, and for every young Black woman who needs to see that she belongs in engineering, too. I want to be a role model. I want to one day mentor young girls and show them that they don’t have to shrink to fit into spaces — they can show up boldly, just as they are, and make real change. My long-term goal is to work in the aerospace industry, possibly with NASA or a company like Boeing or Lockheed Martin, designing next-generation aircraft. It would be relief from the financial stress that weighs so heavily on me and my family.     When I was a little girl growing up in Tanzania, I would often look up at the sky and wonder what kept airplanes in the air. That simple curiosity has stayed with me, but now, years later, I understand that it wasn’t just the science of flight that fascinated me — it was the possibility. The idea that something so heavy could rise, move, and soar with such precision and grace inspired me deeply. Today, that childhood wonder has grown into a calling: I’m pursuing a degree in aerospace engineering, with a dream to design aircraft that are safer, more efficient, and more innovative for the future. My path hasn’t been easy, but it’s been full of purpose. I moved to the United States with my family in 2023 and became a permanent resident in September of that year. We left behind familiarity, careers, and a way of life — all in hopes of finding better opportunities here. Since coming to the U.S., I’ve been working hard not only in school but also to help my family adjust. I’m now enrolled in the Regents' Engineering Pathway Program at the University of North Georgia, and I plan to transfer to Georgia Tech in 2027. My short-term goal is to build a strong academic foundation and gain hands-on experience through internships. Long-term, I want to become an aircraft design engineer — someone who helps shape the way we fly tomorrow. Being a young Black woman and an immigrant in engineering means I often walk into rooms where I don’t see many people who look like me. There are moments of doubt, but there are also moments of pride. I know that my presence itself is powerful. I carry with me the hopes of not just my family, but of young girls — especially African girls — who need to know they belong in STEM, too. I want to be more than an engineer. I want to be an example, a mentor, and a voice for those who are underrepresented but incredibly capable. Financially, my journey is still challenging. My family is doing their best to support me, but college tuition is high, and even though I qualify for the Pell Grant and have taken out student loans, I’m not yet eligible for the HOPE Scholarship in Georgia because I haven’t reached two full years as a legal resident. I do everything I can to help. I study hard, I budget carefully, and I stay focused. But the truth is, we’re stretching a lot just to keep me in school. This scholarship would lift a huge burden off our shoulders. It would allow me to continue pursuing my dream without constant worry about how we’ll afford the next semester.
