This was not the America of ease and opportunity we had imagined. Watching my parents ask friends for money just to pay for my TOEFL exam broke my heart. Then I saw university tuition approaching $100,000, and my sense of security disappeared. Just when I thought our circumstances could not become more difficult, my father needed emergency heart surgery. That was when I realized I was no longer a child. As the eldest daughter, I felt responsible for taking ownership of my future. I began applying for jobs and pushing through interviews despite my stutter and accent. Sometimes, I had to repeat myself several times just to be understood. There were nights I cried alone in my room, wishing we could go back to the life we knew. But going backward would not change our circumstances. I had to learn to navigate them. So I did. I learned to balance school, work, and responsibilities at home. I learned to speak up even when my voice shook, seek opportunities instead of waiting for them, and put myself in rooms where I was not always comfortable. Those lessons transformed me. I earned a 4.0 GPA, made my university’s President’s List, and built a community that once felt impossible to find. Our lives are more stable now, but I no longer measure success by whether life is easy. I measure it by how much I have grown through what was difficult. My family’s struggle taught me that opportunity is sometimes something you have to build for yourself. Today, as an aerospace engineering student, I am building toward a future my family once only imagined. One day, I hope to mentor immigrants who are standing where I once stood to remind them that feeling lost does not mean they are failing. My father was right. “We are going to America.” The night my father said those words, we threw a party. Neighbors came, food was made, and someone danced. I thought we had been handed a new beginning, unaware I was celebrating the end of the only life I knew. Within months, “the land of opportunity” meant my mother pulling extra hours, my father growing quiet under the weight of bills, and my parents borrowing money so I could take the TOEFL. I sat through job interviews stuttering in an accent no one else shared. I filled out FAFSA forms and scholarship applications alone because my parents were strangers to this system. Some nights, I cried wanting my old life back. Eventually, I realized that wanting my old life would not rebuild it, so I learned to rebuild myself. I learned to drive, interview, navigate college, and ask for help without shame. I also carried something from Tanzania: the instinct to ensure I was not the only person moving forward. In high school, teachers trusted me to tutor math, lead exam groups, and explain difficult physics concepts to the class. Outside school, I helped friends with chemistry, made mandazi for Sunday school children, ran marathons for heart disease and autism research, and donated my clothes and textbooks. Leadership does not always look like a title. Sometimes it looks like noticing a need and choosing to help. That belief shapes the engineer I want to become. When I first stepped into an airplane hangar and saw aircraft systems and simulations, aerospace engineering became a problem I wanted to help solve. I became fascinated by using advanced materials, sensors, and intelligent systems to detect aircraft faults before they become catastrophic failures. I want to build systems that identify problems early, improve reliability, and protect lives. I also want to solve another problem: the loss of potential when people have ability but lack access. My mother was a telecommunications engineer and manager in Tanzania, but became a CNA after we immigrated. Watching her rebuild showed me how easily years of education can become non-transferable across borders. I know what it feels like to have ambition without a roadmap, and my goal is to become part of that roadmap. As an aerospace engineer, I want to mentor Black and immigrant students in STEM and build programs offering affordable certifications, mentorship, and career guidance to those overlooked by systemic barriers. I am not pursuing engineering simply to earn a degree or secure a career. I want to build things that make the world safer and build pathways that make opportunity easier to reach. I threw a party the night we left for America, celebrating an ending I mistook for a beginning. Now, I am building that beginning myself one equation, one blueprint, and one opportunity at a time. And when I reach the room I have spent years working toward, I intend to hold the door open.

Sometimes I sit and wonder, what does contribution really mean? For much of my life, I believed contributing to a community meant being a leader, holding a position, or being part of a major organization. As I grew, I realized that contribution does not always come with a title. Sometimes, the smallest acts we overlook can leave the greatest impact on another person. I have contributed to my community in ways that have taught me the meaning of service. At my church, I helped prepare breakfast for Sunday school children while they waited for their parents. I participated in marathons supporting children with autism, and before moving to America, I donated clothes and books to students in need. In school, I have also tutored friends when they struggled with concepts in my STEM classes. Watching someone go from frustrated to confident showed me that knowledge becomes more meaningful when shared. These experiences taught me that contributing does not require recognition; it requires noticing a need and choosing to help. My cultural background has deeply shaped how I view education. Growing up in Tanzania, preparing for the NECTA examinations taught me early that education was an investment in myself something I could carry with me even when everything else changed. My upbringing instilled resilience, perseverance, and pride in how far I have come. When my family moved to America, those values became crucial. Adjusting to a new country felt like staring at a blank page. There were nights I cried missing home, but I reminded myself why we came and kept pushing forward. Through that transition, education provided stability and purpose. Earning a place on the President’s List reinforced that difficult beginnings do not determine the end of your story. That resilience has also shaped my place in STEM. Walking into a classroom and realizing I was often the only Black woman in the room was daunting. Having a stutter and an accent made speaking up intimidating because I worried about how others would perceive me. Eventually, I realized that waiting until I felt comfortable would only keep me quiet. During a national competition, I became a group leader for a team where I was the only female member. I encouraged my teammates and supported them through the work needed to succeed. Seeing our efforts pay off brought me fulfillment because I knew I had helped others succeed. That experience showed me that representation is not only about being seen; it is about using your presence to create space for others. I am pursuing aerospace engineering to continue that work. I want to join the small number of Black women in aerospace and become someone immigrant girls can look at and believe, “I can do this too.” Receiving the Dr. Soronnadi Nnaji Legacy Scholarship would reduce my financial burden and allow me to focus on demanding STEM courses. More than financial support, this scholarship would be an investment in the engineer I am becoming and the people I hope to inspire. I want my journey to show that where you begin does not limit where you can go.

I am Grace Japhari, an aerospace engineering student at the University of North Georgia, but that sentence would have meant very little to me two years ago. In 2024, I moved to the United States, and what I expected to be a new chapter quickly became one of the biggest turning points of my life. I remember crying alone in my bedroom and wanting to go back to what was familiar. I did not know then that the uncomfortable beginning would eventually become the foundation for the person I am becoming. Now, I am working toward my dream of becoming an aerospace engineer while navigating what I like to call my “messy middle” figuring out how to balance school, work, family, my relationship, and still make time to be a person outside of my responsibilities. It is not always easy, but I have learned that growing up means learning how to keep moving even when life does not feel perfectly organized. One thing I would love to do with my life outside of engineering is travel. I want to see how people around the world live, how they interact with one another, and how different cultures understand the world. There is something about realizing that there is so much more to this planet than what I have personally experienced that makes me want to learn more. That curiosity is also what draws me to STEM. What excites me about STEM is the ability to ask a question and then work toward an answer. I love the process of figuring out how and why something happens, breaking a complicated problem into smaller pieces, and eventually creating a solution. Right now, I am experiencing that process firsthand through my introductory engineering course, where I am working with my classmates on a prototype. There is something incredibly satisfying about taking an idea that exists only in your head and slowly turning it into something you can actually see and test. That curiosity is what led me toward aerospace engineering. I do not simply want to look at an aircraft and think that it is impressive. Seeing my dad lying in a hospital bed after heart surgery was one of the hardest experiences I have ever faced. She could barely eat, and my siblings needed support too. I was dealing with my own emotions while trying to be present for my family, keep up with school, and continue working. There was no perfect way to handle it. I simply had to keep showing up. That experience changed the way I understand strength. I learned that being strong does not mean you never cry, feel afraid, or become overwhelmed. Sometimes strength is crying and then getting back up. Sometimes it means being there for someone else when you are struggling too. My dad eventually recovered, and I became deeply grateful for something I had previously taken for granted: simply having the people I love here. I carry that lesson with me into everything I do. I remind myself that tough times do not last, but tough people keep going. My journey has not been a straight line, and I am still figuring things out. But perhaps that is the point. I am learning to embrace the messy middle instead of waiting for everything to be perfect before I allow myself to feel proud of how far I have come. I want to become an aerospace engineer because I am curious about what is possible, but I also want to use that curiosity responsibly. I entered college with ambitious goals, but I also carried concerns about belonging and whether I had what it took to succeed in a challenging field. These concerns became especially real when I entered STEM classrooms and realized that representation was limited. Being different in those spaces sometimes made it difficult to feel confident, especially when communication barriers made expressing myself more challenging. However, those experiences taught me the importance of perseverance. Finding my voice required a confidence I had to build step-by-step, transforming each hesitation into determination. I learned to adapt, advocate for myself, and communicate my ideas while embracing the perspective my background gives me. Academically, adjusting to a new education system required flexibility and persistence. Although many concepts in mathematics and science were familiar, the methods and approaches used in my new environment were different. I had to learn how to think about problems from new perspectives and develop strategies that allowed me to succeed. This process strengthened skills that are essential in engineering: critical thinking, adaptability, and resilience. My educational journey has also been shaped by my family’s sacrifices. Balancing school, work, and family responsibilities has not always been easy. There were moments when financial challenges made me question whether completing my degree would be possible. However, remembering how much my family has sacrificed to help me reach this point motivates me to continue moving forward. Their determination reminds me that my education represents not only my personal goals but also the opportunities created through their sacrifices. These experiences have shaped my future goals. I hope to become a systems engineer in the aerospace industry while also becoming a mentor and source of representation for students who may question whether they belong in STEM. To support our family and create stability, she entered a field where employment was more immediately available and worked long hours to provide for us. Many immigrants arrive in America carrying years of education, professional experience, and aspirations, but they are forced to choose between immediate survival and rebuilding the technical careers they spent years earning. Watching my mother navigate this reality changed the way I view opportunity. It showed me that behind every person working a job that does not reflect their abilities, there may be a story of talent, dedication, and potential waiting for the right support. A problem in my community that many people walk past is the underrecognition of immigrant skills and education. I have noticed that many newcomers, especially those from African countries, are often encouraged to pursue certain careers because they provide quick employment and financial stability. There is nothing wrong with these professions, and many people find purpose and success in them. However, the problem occurs when individuals are not given the guidance or resources to explore careers that align with their education, experience, and passions. If I had the resources to address this problem, I would create a mentorship program for new immigrants that provides career navigation, foreign credential evaluation guidance, professional networking opportunities, and connections to educational pathways. Many immigrants do not lack ability or determination they lack access to information, mentorship, and opportunities that can help them rebuild their careers. My mother’s journey continues to influence the way I view community and service. Her sacrifices allowed me to pursue Aerospace Engineering and dream beyond what I once thought was possible. In return, I hope to help create a community where immigrants do not have to choose between supporting their families and pursuing the careers they are passionate about. To me, building a stronger community means recognizing the value people bring with them, even when their talents are not immediately visible. Sometimes the greatest impact we can make is helping someone rediscover the possibilities they thought they had lost.

After moving from Africa to the United States in 2024, I faced the massive challenge of adapting to a completely new academic and cultural system while diving into a heavy STEM course load. In many of my advanced Calculus and Computer Science classes, I am the only Black woman in the room. It can feel incredibly isolating, and that weight is definitely heavier when you're navigating a new environment with a stutter and an accent. There are absolutely moments when missing home feels overwhelming. However, these challenges haven't stopped me—they’ve forced me to build real resilience and self-confidence. I’ve learned to advocate for myself, speak up even when it feels uncomfortable, and push forward through obstacles. These daily struggles aren't barriers anymore; they are the exact preparation I need for the high-stakes demands of the aerospace industry. My short-term goal is to transfer to Georgia Tech to pursue a combined BS/MS in Aerospace Engineering. While completing my degree, I plan to get hands-on experience through co-op programs with companies like Delta Air Lines or Lockheed Martin. Long-term, my goal is to earn a PhD and join the incredibly small percentage of Black women who hold doctorates in this field. I want to focus my research on developing real-time diagnostic systems that can catch mechanical and material faults in aircraft before they become critical, using predictive data to save lives. Being an underrepresented minority has completely shaped these goals. The lack of representation in aerospace is a quiet isolation I feel every week, but it serves as my fuel. It pushes me to succeed not just for my own career, but to open the door for others. I want to show young women who feel out of place or self-conscious about their voice that they belong at the highest levels of STEM. This scholarship would directly help ease the financial strain of my upcoming transfer and the heavy cost of educational materials for Georgia Tech. I want to use my journey to cultivate self-belief in young women, proving that anyone can excel in STEM if they put their mind to it. Furthermore, giving back means uplifting those around me; my long-term goal is to build shelter homes and supply food and clothing to communities in need, ensuring that displaced or struggling people feel like they truly belong and have a place to call home. This scholarship will not just ease my financial burdens, but serve as a vital bridge to the future I am determined to create.

“We are going to America.” When those words left my dad’s mouth, I felt a wave of intense excitement, mixed with a deep sadness. We were heading to the land of opportunity, but it also meant leaving behind old friends and relatives. Just like that, we landed. As exciting as it was, nobody warned me how much our lives were about to change, requiring me to grow immensely physically, mentally, and emotionally. Eventually, I enrolled in college, but the tuition was so high that my dad even considered having me take a gap year just to work. I am currently a sophomore at UNG, planning to transfer to Georgia Tech. My first semester was incredibly difficult due to my accent and stutter, but I learned to put myself out there. Through that vulnerability, I have built an amazing community and found a supportive boyfriend who loves me for exactly who I am. Amidst these academic challenges, my family faced a crisis when my dad had to undergo heart surgery. Seeing him in the ICU was devastating; my mom was so distraught she couldn't even eat. I remember crying and praying, desperate for him to get better. Thankfully, he made it through. Nevertheless, the financial burden remains heavy. My dream is to attend Georgia Tech for Aerospace Engineering, but the cost is daunting. Sometimes I worry about whether I will be able to afford it. Winning this scholarship would profoundly alleviate the financial strain on my family. Currently, I work and study simultaneously to pay for my own expenses. Despite these hurdles, I maintain a 3.77 GPA and was recently recognized by the UNG President for attaining a perfect 4.0 GPA for the Spring 2026 semester. I am deeply determined to get my degree and join the mere 2% of Black women in this field. Integration allows us to take infinitely small pieces of information and sum them to understand a complex whole. Through integration, we calculate the total force exerted on these structures, ensuring they can withstand the elements. My experiences this year adjusting, studying, working, and watching my dad fight for his health have shaped me into someone who refuses to give up. Education is a potent instrument yet in my case it has also been the source of guidance, stability and hope. I cannot say that when I went to the United States only a year ago I did not realize to what extent my educational path and further life was going to be shaped. It was all new in the beginning language, culture, expectations, pace of life. I was nineteen, new country, trying to discover myself not to mention I was also trying to make a life out of nothing. However, school was the only place I found clarity though I was confused and under pressure. It demonstrated to me my natural strengths, what I liked and what I was interested in fulfilling in the long run. My classes (mostly in science and math) helped me to understand that I am more of a STEM student, and that my inquisitiveness found a home in this world. The finding was the first sure step towards an extremely uncertain year. It has not been easy to adapt to America. I needed to study all simultaneously how to cope in school, how I could get employment, how to take care of myself, and how I could comprehend a culture that at least was quicker than anything I had been acquainted with. I had four various jobs in the first year of my stay and changed the jobs every other time I required more time or higher wages. Each work experience taught me something new regarding people, responsibility and adulthood. I would be going to work and school and school and work, and at one time even fail to notice how exhausted I was, until I sat down at the end of the day. Yet those days were long, and made me stronger. They made me mature at a young age, and become self-reliant, and believe that my dreams were worth the suffering. College turned out to be a turning point. I began my first semester and I could finally feel like I was doing something that concerned me- that would bring me directly to my future. Although my courses were challenging and it was too much to juggle, I was determined to do so because I understood the importance of the education that I was getting. I made it through my first semester with a sense of pride; and not because it was smooth sailing, but because I was able to never give up because it seemed that everything was pressing me. That was a lesson that proved what I already knew, the fruits of education are worth sacrificing. Learning opens the doors that even hard work cannot open, even on those days when one needs to rest, even on those days when life is heavy. I am currently studying aerospace, which is the field that makes people stretch the boundaries of human knowledge and makes them think out of the box. The thought of contributing to something that will not only develop technology but also assist in the future moves me and it inspires me to continue with the education despite the complications in life beyond the classroom. And living has been made a hassle. My father underwent heart surgery some time back and we are yet to come to terms with it financially and emotionally. Watching my mother go through two jobs and my dad go through the long hours even when his health is not in the best shape has altered my perspectives in regards to my schooling. It is because their sacrifices drive me to work harder not because I am pressured but rather because I love them. I would like to apply my education to make a more positive future not only to myself but also to my parents and siblings. I would like to see them relax, sleep more, and in the end have stability that they have been struggling to achieve since we got here. I have learned that life is not necessarily about pushing oneself despite all the stress. You need to pause every now and then in the frenzy of the chasing and just see the little things as the flying by of butterflies, the family time time and just the little things of remembering that surviving is not all that life is about and that it is also about happiness. It is moments like those that keep me down to earth. They remind me my mission of why I am working so hard and who I am doing it. I am dreaming a lot, and my relocation to the United States provided me with an opportunity to pursue my dreams with some sort of courage that I was not aware of having. One of the most challenging moments in my life happened during high school in my home country, Tanzania. I was attending a boarding school, and everything revolved around one major goal—preparing for the national exams. These exams were everything. The pressure to perform well and earn a Division 1 score, ideally a 1.7 or better, was intense. Everyone around me seemed to be locked into study mode 24/7, and I felt like I had to push myself beyond my limits just to keep up. At the same time, I was trying to stay grounded in other areas of life. I wanted to grow socially, stay active, and most importantly, continue growing in my faith. But trying to juggle it all in that high-pressure environment began to take a toll on me. I felt mentally exhausted, emotionally overwhelmed, and physically drained. I didn’t know it then, but I was experiencing burnout. What helped me was the decision to pause and take a step back. I reminded myself of how far I had already come and how much effort I had put in. Instead of constantly stressing over what I hadn’t done, I started to appreciate what I had achieved. I began giving myself grace—not just as a student, but as a human being doing her best. That small mental shift made a big difference. Spiritually, I leaned more into my faith. I started praying more often and found myself spending quiet moments talking to God, especially when I felt overwhelmed. Those moments gave me peace and reminded me I wasn’t alone. My mom, despite her experience as a telecom engineer, began working as a CNA to support us while adjusting to life here. My dad worked long hours, taking whatever jobs he could find to help us stay afloat. I watched them give everything without complaint, and that lit a fire in me to work even harder. I knew I couldn’t waste the sacrifices they were making. That’s when I truly began to understand the weight and the power of my education, not just for myself, but for my whole family. As a new permanent resident, I quickly learned that while the U.S. offers opportunities, it also comes with financial obstacles, especially when it comes to college. I currently receive the Pell Grant and have taken out student loans, but it’s still not enough to cover all my tuition, books, transportation, and basic living needs. I’m not eligible for the HOPE Scholarship yet, since I haven’t been a Georgia resident for the full two years required. That means that, even though I’ve lived here legally since September 2023 and attend the University of North Georgia, I still don’t qualify for the same financial support as some of my classmates. The truth is, paying for college has been a struggle. My parents help in every way they can, but with younger siblings and bills piling up, there’s only so much they can do. I’ve had to say no to activities, skip meals to save money, and stress constantly about how we’ll afford the next semester. There have been nights I’ve broken down crying — not because I wanted to give up, but because I’ve been carrying so much pressure, knowing how badly I want this and how hard it is to get there. I’m now enrolled in the Regents' Engineering Pathway Program at the University of North Georgia, and I plan to transfer to Georgia Tech in 2027. My short-term goal is to build a strong academic foundation and gain hands-on experience through internships. Long-term, I want to become an aircraft design engineer — someone who helps shape the way we fly tomorrow. Being a young Black woman and an immigrant in engineering means I often walk into rooms where I don’t see many people who look like me. There are moments of doubt, but there are also moments of pride. I know that my presence itself is powerful. I carry with me the hopes of not just my family, but of young girls — especially African girls — who need to know they belong in STEM, too. I want to be more than an engineer. I want to be an example, a mentor, and a voice for those who are underrepresented but incredibly capable. Financially, my journey is still challenging. My family is doing their best to support me, but college tuition is high, and even though I qualify for the Pell Grant and have taken out student loans, I’m not yet eligible for the HOPE Scholarship in Georgia because I haven’t reached two full years as a legal resident. I do everything I can to help. I study hard, I budget carefully, and I stay focused. But the truth is, we’re stretching a lot just to keep me in school. This scholarship would lift a huge burden off our shoulders. It would allow me to continue pursuing my dream without constant worry about how we’ll afford the next semester. I’m not asking for help because I feel entitled — I’m asking because I’m determined to make the most of every opportunity. I believe that with support, I can go further than I ever imagined. I want to design aircraft that change how we travel and connect, and I want to carry with me the voices of the underrepresented, the immigrants, the dreamers — the ones who dared to look at the sky and believe they belonged there, too.
