Hi, my name is Grace Holmes, and I’m a transfer student at Stockton University pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Marine Science with a concentration in Marine Biology. I recently earned my associate degree in environmental science and am continuing my studies with the goal of conducting meaningful research in marine conservation.
I am also a student-athlete, competing on Stockton’s track and field team as a pole vaulter, which has taught me discipline, resilience, and time management. Beyond academics and athletics, I love traveling, lifting, hiking, and spending time by the ocean the place that inspires my career path.
I’m passionate about protecting marine ecosystems and aspire to contribute to research that addresses climate change and the health of our oceans. Receiving scholarship support would help me focus on academics and research opportunities while reducing the financial stress of pursuing higher education.

Environmental Kindness Scholarship
From a young age, I have been drawn to the ocean and fascinated by the life it holds. Spending time at the beach, snorkeling, and exploring nature gave me an appreciation for how delicate and interconnected ecosystems are. Over time, I also became more aware of the ways human activity threatens those ecosystems. Seeing plastic wash up on the shore or hearing about coral bleaching events motivated me to learn more about environmental science and to dedicate my education and career to protecting the environment. I am passionate about protecting the environment because I believe it is not only our responsibility but also our duty to future generations to preserve the natural world we rely on for survival.
As a transfer student now pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Marine Science with a concentration in Marine Biology, I have the opportunity to study the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems. Rising ocean temperatures, sea level rise, and ocean acidification are all direct results of climate change, and they are reshaping habitats at an alarming rate. Through my studies, I plan to focus on understanding how these changes affect species such as fish, marine mammals, and coral reefs, and to explore solutions that can mitigate these impacts. Whether through research, conservation programs, or community education, I want to use science as a tool to promote awareness and action. By building a foundation in marine biology, I will be prepared to contribute to global efforts to combat climate change and protect the oceans.
I also believe that protecting the environment requires collective action, and everyone can play a part in reducing their carbon footprint. For my family and friends, I encourage them to make small, consistent changes in their daily lives. For example, switching from single-use plastics to reusable bottles, bags, and containers can drastically cut down on waste. Choosing to carpool, bike, or walk, when possible, helps reduce carbon emissions. Even simple actions like turning off lights when they aren’t needed, conserving water, and supporting renewable energy initiatives can make a difference. Diet also plays a role incorporating more plant-based meals and reducing food waste are both effective ways to lower one’s environmental impact.
My advice to those around me is that individual actions may seem small, but together they create a ripple effect that leads to larger change. Protecting the environment and addressing climate change is a massive challenge, but it begins with each of us making intentional choices. Through my education and future career, I hope to inspire others to care for the planet and to contribute to solutions that ensure a healthier, more sustainable world for generations to come.
