Growing up, I had found it difficult to navigate where I would eventually choose as a lifetime career prospect. Despite my passion for science, I struggled to find my niche but soon, things began to unfold. I had earlier lost my dad to an unknown illness when I was five and my mom to a cardiac arrest when I was thirteen. These experiences that have been a significant part of my life did not only come with grief, but it had also sparked an interest in me- understanding the healthcare issues faced by people in my community. It had made me keen to figure out what exactly happens to people in terms of dealing with their health needs, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and most of all, what cardiac arrest was. When I started doing my researching on what a cardiac arrest was, it turned out to be a condition that can occur unexpectedly, an automated external defibrillator could save someone’s life in such moments and certain conditions could predispose people to this life-threatening event. From where I come from, many people die from unknown illnesses and unattended health care conditions that are not immediately treated. My strong desire to change the narrative became a turning point for me and significantly influenced my interest in pursuing a career in health care. It became clearer to me what I wanted to do, not just healthcare but particularly, I grew interested in areas of emergency treatment and nursing. While I am currently a nursing student at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), actively progressing through the foundational and clinical stages of my education, my potential career interest is to be an Emergency Room Nurse. The emergency room is an energized and high-pressure department. It is where split-second decisions can make all the difference between life and death. I have often considered myself as an ER nurse, being right at the forefront, offering immediate care to patients at that hour of vulnerability. This drive within me to enter Emergency nursing is from my personal experiences to the need to fill healthcare gaps, especially in less privileged populations. I hope to serve as both a competent clinician and a compassionate presence. From the stabilization of a trauma patient to consoling a concerned family member, I would like to bring humanity into every encounter. The privilege of connecting with individuals during some of the most pivotal moments of their lives is where I find my ultimate career in. Becoming an emergency room nurse is more than a career choice for me—it is a calling. This represents a personal journey from loss to purpose, from asking the "whys" of yesterday to how the answers will create solutions for tomorrow. I am determined to channel experiences and skills into an actionable and palpable difference in other people's lives, one emergency at a time. It would be a truly live-changing step toward the fulfillment of this dream-to act as a catalyst for change within the healthcare paradigm in my local community- if I am given this opportunity. Receiving the Olivia Wilson Memorial Nursing Scholarship would help me address a current financial barrier that is directly impacting my education. I currently have a balance from the spring semester (2024-2025), which is preventing me from registering for the upcoming term. This scholarship would go a long way in helping me clear that balance so I can continue my nursing education without interruption. Beyond easing the financial strain, it would also represent a strong support for my commitment to healthcare and my determination to serve others through this profession.

From a young age, I have been drawn to the idea of helping others in their most vulnerable moments and understanding the healthcare issues faced by people in my community. This passion guided me to pursue a degree in nursing—a profession that seeks to create a meaningful experience in the lives of others through service. Bearing this in mind, I am determined to focus on my studies while in school and also get involved in various extracurricular activities that would prepare me for success both in my field of study—nursing—and different aspects of life upon graduation. Through active studying and hard work, I was able to obtain a perfect grade point average of 4.0 for my fall semester, and I intend to uphold such excellence throughout my studies. In regard to my extracurriculars, I have been actively involved in the Carolyn F. Blakely Honors Program, which has allowed me to develop strong leadership, critical thinking, and collaborative skills. Through this program, I have participated in community service initiatives, workshops, and seminars that have broadened my understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the healthcare field. Additionally, I am a member of the Student Nurses Association, where I engage with peers and mentors who share my passion for nursing and healthcare advocacy. These extracurricular activities have not only enriched my academic journey but I believe will also prepare me for the real-world scenarios that I will encounter as a nurse. After graduation, I intend to work as an Emergency Room Nurse. The emergency room is an energized and high-pressure department. It is where split-second decisions can make all the difference between life and death. I have often considered myself as an Emergency Room nurse, being right at the forefront, offering immediate care to patients at that hour of vulnerability. This drive within me to involve myself in Emergency nursing stems from my personal experiences and the need to fill healthcare gaps, especially in less privileged populations. I hope to serve as both a competent clinician and a compassionate presence, having the privilege of connecting with individuals during the most pivotal moments of their lives. Beyond my professional aspirations, I am committed to improving healthcare access in underserved communities, particularly in rural parts of Nigeria where medical services are often limited. By working with local healthcare providers and leveraging my skills as a nurse, I plan to organize health awareness campaigns focused on preventive care, maternal health, and chronic disease management. My goal is to empower these communities with the knowledge and resources needed to improve their overall well-being. I believe that creating sustainable healthcare initiatives will not only address immediate health concerns but also foster long-term improvements in these communities.
