Bio

Hello, my name is Dylan Chamley! I am enrolled at Western Dakota Technical College (WDT) where I am majoring in Electrical Trades. Strangely, I have my sights set on the Theater world. I want to be a part of the lighting crew for Broadway or some other big-name theater. Hopefully, I will be able to part-time as an actor on their stage after getting an “in” from working with the director’s crew. A lot of people tell me this is a big dream for a small-town kid but I will still try to shoot for the stars!

    Minecraft Forever Fan Scholarship
Minecraft reminds me that people are lonely. I know that's a very contradictive thing to say about Minecraft. However, I believe that it is true for many reasons but to tell you that I first have to tell you a story. When I was very young, my dad had a lot of friends that he connected with all the time they would often come over to the house and hang out and play games such as Magic the Gathering. But, eventually, they branched out to Viedo games there was my first encounter with many many video games. However, one of them was Minecraft I would do nothing but be on the computer all day every day playing the game on my dad's PC I played the game all the time without ever knowing that there was an "end" to Minecraft and so I spent my days building random structures and deleting and creating worlds and fighting zombies but after a while I found that there was no one else to enjoy it with and I had a sense of loneliness My dad saw me playing the game all the time and thought that this would be a great way to bond with me because he and his friends had a server that they all played on with mods. So my dad talked to my uncle, and I built a PC with my uncle, specifically for Minecraft. When the computer was built, my dad set up the mods and got me on the server. And I was excited to finally play with the adults and not have to play by myself anymore. It made me want to be big and smart like them and not lonely in a sandbox game. But regardless of finally having another person to play with, I found that because I was younger than all of them, I couldn’t keep up. And so I was stuck by myself in a strange and different Minecraft than I was used to, and I felt lonely again. So I ended up not playing the game for a few years because of it. This experience seems very inconsequential to many, but to me, it taught me about even when you are in a society with billions of people in it, you may not always find someone to connect with, someone to spend time with and share moments with. But that’s in the past, and I’m an adult now, and I’ve come to an understanding that being lonely is important because if I was never lonely, I wouldn’t appreciate the people who are in my life now and what they do for me. So when I see Minecraft, I think about how grateful I am for the people in my life who help me with everyday life, from holding a door for me to giving me life advice. I’m grateful for each one of them.
    Learner Math Lover Scholarship
I use math to inspire people or that's the goal. I am enrolled at Western Dakota Technical College to become an electrical trade professional. However, I am not going to work in the residential field or commercial field I want to work in the Theater field! I want to be the lighting crew for big-name productions where there are pyrotechnics, colorful lights, booming speakers, and last but not least big audiences! It may not seem like it but there is a lot of mathematical know-how in all of this. The reason I know this is because of a Show called "The Phantom of the Oprea" The first time I saw "The Phantom of the Oprea" I watched a giant Chandler that filled the entire ceiling that fell and nearly crushed the audience as a whole. while everyone else was screening I wanted to learn the mathematical equation for the falling Chandler because I knew this was designed for the Phantom of the Oprea and someone who built the Chandler knew the tensile strength of the wire and the amount of electrons flowing through it to send the signal to drop and the signal to blare the lights on and off in seemingly random ways and not just that but also have the secret to understanding the patterns in the chaos of this chandler I want to be that person. I find it extremely romantic and jaw-dropping to wrap your head around motions and actions that take fractions of a second to do yet hours to understand. This is why I love math because without math the magic of the theater would not be as strong In my life as it is. Math inspires me to go out and spread the magic of theater to audiences around the country. My only hope is that one day someone else will be just as inspired as I was the first time I saw a chandler drop from the ceiling
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
Why I'm going to collage The reason I chose electrical trades as my major is that I wanted an in into just about any job field. More specifically, I want into the drama field as a lighting technician. Most of the time, you do not need to go to college to have this position; however, having an electrical trades background helps significantly. If I’m able to work as a lighting crew, that will allow me to work as an actor part-time. The reason I am so keen on this is because I love spreading the magic of entertainment to my community! It’s very important to me, and if I can help other people achieve that goal via lighting crew, I will be satisfied, but even more satisfied if I could be down on the stage and help them as a supporting actor. I love entertainment so much that I also volunteer as characters with a group called Enchanted Hat. We go out to kids events and dress up. So far, I’ve been Spider-Man and Harry Potter, and I plan on working on a Jack the Skeleton costume for next year during the October season. My favorite part about spreading the magic of entertainment is seeing the smiles on kids faces or the awe in their eyes, making them question if magic really does exist in our world. The second reason I find helping the community important is because I had an extremely rough childhood. My father left to go get milk and didn’t return for eight years. During that time, my mom met another very abusive man, and eventually, we had to get away from him. When we did, that is when my father came back. I made amends with him, and then two years after that, he passed away when I was a junior in high school. I wanna be a light for kids who are in need because when I was going through troubles and tribulations, I didn’t have support other than from online games and the drama department at my high school. I found that drama was the better connection of the two as I found the stage immensely fulfilling, and I grew as a person from it. I learned about myself at the same time I came to understand drama. But I also learned about other people and how vile they are. I still wanna give that laughter and joy to them because more often than not, I’ve learned through my childhood that it is always the most unexpected person who needs the most help. That’s why I wanna be an electrician, so that I may be able to help myself and others as well. I feel that when going to college, I don’t learn just about electrician work but also more about people, and I am excited to continue to learn about the world even after I complete college, as you can never stop learning and growing as a person and finding your place.
