I am a third-year mechatronics engineering student at a public university in California, with prior coursework in mechanical engineering. I began my academic journey at a community college before transferring to a four-year institution, where I have continued to build a strong foundation in mechanical design, electronics, and control systems. I am particularly interested in robotics and aspire to work on the design and development of small, personal robotic systems. Alongside my studies, I work more than 20 hours per week to support my education and living expenses. I am committed to completing my degree and contributing to innovative engineering solutions that make people's lives easier and more enjoyable.

Dr. Samuel Attoh Legacy Scholarship
To me, legacy is not defined by wealth, titles, or recognition, but by the values and resilience passed from one generation to the next. Legacy is what remains long after individual achievements fade - the work ethic, sacrifices, and sense of responsibility that shape how we live our lives and treat others. It is both an inheritance and a choice: something we are given, and something we actively continue or build upon.
My upbringing was deeply influenced by the hard work of my parents. My dad spent much of his time traveling for work in order to provide for our family. His frequent absences were not a reflection of distance or detachment, but of love. He showed me that responsibility often requires personal sacrifice and that providing for those you love sometimes means putting their needs above your own. Even when he was away, his commitment to our family was constant, and that left a lasting impression on me.
At the same time, my mom was the foundation of our household. She worked multiple jobs simultaneously while also taking care of me and my sister. She balanced long hours, financial stress, and parenting with an amount of strength and determination that has left me in awe multiple times. Watching her balance so much at once, day in and day out, taught me what perseverance truly looks like. She did not give up when things were difficult. Instead, she adapted, worked harder, and made sure our family moved forward. Her example showed me that strength is not easy, but it can become easier when it’s for others rather than just yourself.
Growing up in this environment shaped my path in life in numerous ways. I learned early on the value of hard work, self-discipline, and commitment. I understood that success is rarely immediate and that progress often comes through sustained effort over time and never without sacrifices. These lessons have guided me through my life as well as my academic journey, particularly as I pursued higher education while balancing financial responsibilities and employment.
As I move forward, I aim to continue the cycle of resilience and dedication my parents began, while also striving to build upon it. I want to create a future where hard work still matters, but where stability and balance are more attainable. By pursuing a career rooted in problem-solving and innovation, I hope to create opportunities not only for myself, but for those around me. I plan to honor my parents’ legacy by remaining strong in the face of challenges, dedicated to my goals, and mindful of the sacrifices that made my journey possible. Legacy means carrying forward the values that shaped me while striving to create a better path ahead. Ultimately, I hope to become someone they can look at and be proud of the living legacy they’ve created.
