The program I chose to further my graduate education in itself will make a positive impact on society the moment I graduate. Not only will I benefit from graduating from this prestigious program, but my fellow classmates will as well. After becoming the first person in my family to obtain a bachelor's degree, I was motivated to further my education and apply to graduate schools all over the U.S. My goal was always to find a career where I was able to help the people of my community who are in need. I started an interest in Occupational Therapy and began applying to programs. I always loved the idea of being able to help a person develop from a previous injury or disability so they are able to do everyday, life activities before their diagnoses no matter what process it takes. I ended up getting denied from all of the programs because I simply did not have the requirements to get accepted to any. I started to panic and did not know where my education would continue and that worried me. As I was researching graduate programs, I stumbled upon a job offer in my town to become a social worker and that sparked my idea; social work was always one of my back up plans. I wanted to be able to help improve the social work system in child welfare and help people in my community get back on their feet; whether they are single parents, substance abuse recoverers, children in the foster care services, and many more. I started the whole process again and got accepted into multiple masters of social work programs around the tri-state area. I started to feel a bit of hope with my new plan of education because it was a route I wanted to take to further my knowledge in that field for a successful, lifelong career. It is said to see the social work realm being in high demand for job careers because no one wants to do the job anymore and find these people in our community a home. And that is what made me narrow my career path a bit more and want to study in the clinical practice of social work. I want to be in the front lines of a social work service, specifically working with children and teenagers, to help them achieve their goals for the future. My goal is to become a social worker for the Department of Education in New York City for a public high school where I can help these high school students stay on track with their class schedule, maintaining grades and attendance, while also making sure they are okay mentally every day and take their background and mental health into consideration, always. This will create such a positive impact in my society because I come from a part of my city where it is hard to find an affordable roof over our heads where everyone in the family can excel. New York City is also known for a major statistic in the homeless population. With that being said, I believe helping these kids find homes first will help the homelessness rate go down as well as form these children's lives with a fresh start such as going to school and getting an education where I will hopefully be working for after my graduate studies in 3 years.
