Bio

What drives me most is the creative process of game development, fueled by my passion for STEM and technology. My journey began in high school, where I discovered programming and the power of code to solve real-world problems. This led me to major in Computer Science at the University of Texas-Permian Basin. As a Hispanic woman in STEM, I take pride in contributing to diversity and strive to make a meaningful impact. Game development excites me because it combines designing intricate mechanics with crafting narratives that engage players. Creating my own 2D video game was a transformative experience, enhancing my technical skills and deepening my appreciation for creative design. It taught me perseverance, attention to detail, and the value of iteration. Through rigorous coursework and collaborative projects, I’ve developed critical thinking skills and the ability to balance creativity with technical precision. My goal is to create games that inspire critical thinking and explore meaningful themes. I plan to pursue a master’s degree to refine my skills and explore emerging technologies. Receiving this scholarship would provide crucial financial support, allowing me to focus on my studies and access resources for research and development. This opportunity would help me contribute to game development and inspire others in STEM. My journey has been one of growth and determination, and I am excited about the possibilities ahead.

Promising Pathways - Hard of Hearing Scholarship
I'm studying computer science with a focus on Game Design: Programming. My journey through school as a student who is hard of hearing has been shaped by various challenges and triumphs. When I began middle school, my hearing aids were a source of discomfort and embarrassment. My classmates noticed them, leading to uncomfortable questions like, "Why don't you wear them?" and "Are you ashamed of them?" This made me reluctant to use them, despite the significant role they played in helping me hear and focus better. I struggle with the social stigma associated with my hearing aids, which overshadows their practical benefits. My parents had invested significant time and resources to ensure I had the best possible hearing aids, but it took me a while to appreciate their true value. By the end of middle school, I was relieved when I was told I didn't need to use them anymore, as my grades had improved and I was no longer on a 504 plan. However, this decision was more about relief from social pressures than a true understanding of my needs. It wasn't until my sophomore year in high school that I reconsidered using hearing aids. I was anxious about the potential stigma and how it might affect my social interactions. This fear led me to avoid using them, despite recognizing that they could significantly improve my focus and performance, especially in complex subjects like programming. I didn't fully grasp how much they could enhance my learning experience until later. Throughout these challenges, my parents have been a constant source of support. They have been instrumental in helping me navigate my feelings about hearing aids and encouraging me to embrace the tools that help me succeed. Their support has been crucial in my academic achievements, and I recognize that my accomplishments are a result of both my efforts and their unwavering encouragement. After completing my degree, I plan to use my knowledge and experience to advocate for individuals with hearing impairments. My goal is to contribute to initiatives that improve access to hearing aids and promote understanding of their benefits. I want to help others see hearing aids as tools for enhancing opportunities rather than as something to be ashamed of. My journey through school, marked by overcoming the stigma associated with hearing aids and receiving support from my family, has shaped my academic and personal goals. As I advance in my career, I am committed to supporting others in similar situations and advocating for a more inclusive understanding of hearing aids.
