My life goal is to become a family nurse practitioner who provides compassionate, accessible care to patients affected by addiction and other barriers to healthcare. As an emergency department nurse, I have seen how often patients delay seeking care because they fear judgment or have had negative experiences within the healthcare system. I want to help change that by creating an environment where patients feel respected, heard, and supported. I am most passionate about reducing stigma and improving access to care for underserved populations. This passion is both professional and personal. After losing my brother to an overdose involving fentanyl and xylazine, I became more committed to harm reduction, patient education, and addiction treatment. At work, I helped develop and implement an emergency department harm-reduction initiative that provided test strips, naloxone education, and treatment resources. The project increased distribution of harm-reduction supplies among eligible patients from 5% to 94%. I am a strong candidate because I have demonstrated resilience, leadership, and a commitment to serving others. I experienced homelessness during high school and missed an academic year, but I continued my education through day and night school while working. I later became the first person in my family to graduate from high school and college. These experiences strengthened my perseverance and deepened my understanding of how life circumstances can affect health and opportunity.
