I never knew what I wanted to do as a child. In class they would say astronaut, scientists, fashion designer but I just had no idea. I remember once in middle school they asked us to stand in a line of what we would like to do based on the first letter of that career. For example, someone who wanted to become a doctor would stand in the D category. Everyone shuffled to their spot but I was still standing there. All the girls ran to V because they wanted to be veterinarians, so I hid myself in the group of Vs because how could I explain at 11 years old that I had no idea what I wanted to do for the rest of my life?
How could you know at 11 years old? How could you know at 22 years old? I just knew I was good at two things and those two characteristics were being creative and being helpful. I’ve always had a knack for creating so I figured that was the direction I’d eventually go in. As I got older the world started to seem less colorful. Artist don’t make money they said. So I scratched that idea in my head and I started my journey to nursing in community college.
Fresh out of high school I figured being helpful is a great characteristic to have so I figured nursing was were I’d fit best. All the girls were following that pathway so there I went again and hid myself in the N category which was nursing. I pursued nursing till I just couldn’t anymore. I loved helping people but I figured there’s more than one way to make a positive impact in the world.
I got so close to obtaining my nursing degree but I just wasn’t happy. So I did what any unhappy person would do and switched. The side I hid from myself for so long bursted through. I opened up creative side and decided to now pursue interior design at a state university. But I still played with the idea of helping people. I thought to myself, how long will it be till I’m unsatisfied again. How could interior design fulfill me if I still want to help people I thought?
Interior design can help in many ways like evoking happiness and soothing the soul. It can inspire confidence, empathy, pride, creativity, security and energy. Interior design creates spaces that make people feel good. Interior design can create places for hotels, restaurants and homes. These are all places that I feel my best. But that idea of making people feel good wasn’t enough for me.
Of course the idea of creating makes me happy but I really pursed interior design is because my mother. She went to jail when I was in high school and when she came out, there was no safe space for her to live because she is a convict. This opened my eyes to a whole new world. I saw everything in a different perspective.
With my interior design degree I would gain the knowledge to learn programs and gain a certificate which would let me produce small structures on my own. I could go to the city with the idea of tiny homes for woman who have recently come out of jail. This would give them access to a safe place to have meals and sleep. This is how I plan to make a positive impact on the world through my career.
