Bio

Hello, my name is Genesis Torres, and I’m a student at Klein Forest High School in Houston, TX. I’m passionate about animals, creating things, and raising livestock, which are all a big part of who I am and what I hope to do in the future. I’m currently in my second year of welding, where I’ve learned how to create and fix metal structures. I’ve also been studying horticulture, which has taught me about plants and sustainable farming. On top of that, I’m taking advanced veterinary medicine classes, where I’ve gotten hands-on experience in taking care of animals. Through my school in the FFA program, I raise livestock like cattle and lambs, which has helped me learn even more about agriculture and animal care. I’m also involved in my school’s student council, where I work to make our school a better place for everyone. My goal is to join the Army Reserves while finishing high school and to eventually become a veterinarian. It’s really important to me to be the first in my family to go to college, and I’m determined to make that happen. My interests and experiences have helped prepare me to make a difference in the veterinary and agricultural fields someday. I’m excited to keep learning and working hard toward my dreams!

    Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
My personal experiences with finances and financial education are rooted in the challenges my family has faced over the years. Growing up in a single-mother household, I saw my mom work hard to make ends meet while navigating financial struggles. She had me when she was very young, and watching her resilience and determination taught me the importance of resourcefulness and making thoughtful financial choices. These experiences motivated me to learn how to manage money responsibly so that I could build a better future for myself and help support those I care about. Through my family's journey, I learned key lessons about budgeting, saving, and prioritizing needs over wants. These lessons shaped my understanding of financial responsibility and inspired me to take control of my own financial education. I realized early on that developing good money habits is essential not just for stability but also for achieving bigger goals, such as pursuing higher education and building a career. I am determined to use what I’ve learned to break down barriers and create opportunities for myself and my family. My experiences in school have also contributed to my understanding of financial management. Raising livestock has taught me the importance of planning and resource allocation, such as budgeting for feed costs and ensuring my animals are cared for properly. Welding and horticulture have given me practical experience in managing materials and resources efficiently, skills that I know will be valuable in managing finances in the future. In veterinary medicine classes, I’ve gained insights into the financial challenges of pursuing higher education and starting a career, especially in a field that requires specialized training and expensive equipment. As the first in my family to attend college, I am committed to avoiding the financial hardships my family has faced and building a better future. I plan to practice disciplined saving, make informed decisions about spending, and avoid unnecessary debt. By staying committed to good financial habits, I aim to achieve independence and stability while pursuing my dream of becoming a veterinarian. I also hope to give back to my family and community by sharing the lessons I’ve learned, helping others navigate financial challenges, and inspiring them to work toward their goals. Ultimately, I believe that financial education is a powerful tool for creating a secure and prosperous future. By applying these lessons, I can build a life of stability and fulfillment while making a meaningful impact on those around me.
