My name is Gemma, and I graduated high school this year as valedictorian (2025). Throughout high school, I participated in concurrent enrollment, which allowed me to take college classes while still in high school. By the time I graduated, I had already completed five college classes and earned one of my certificates. I now plan to enroll in Berklee Online to earn a Professional Bass Certificate. Additionally, I will be attending my community college, where I will receive several more certificates in fields such as Commercial Music, Business Management, and Bookkeeping.

Despite not coming from a musical family, I was determined to learn a musical instrument. I chose the violin and started taking lessons. With consistent practice, I was able to play nursery rhymes pretty quickly. However, I felt unenthusiastic about the violin. Surprisingly, I tried the electric guitar. Switching from the classical violin to the loud electric guitar was quite a change and I loved it! Since the pandemic was in full swing, I never took any formal guitar lessons. Instead, I taught myself using library books, apps, and videos.
About two years later, I discovered the bass guitar and its differences from the electric guitar. After some contemplation, I realized that I had a stronger passion for the bass. Now, at eighteen years old, I’ve been diligently teaching myself the bass guitar. I would like to make a career for myself by professionally playing the bass guitar; possibly as a studio and/or touring musician.
This year, I graduated from my high school as valedictorian (May 2025), and I’m now planning to pursue a Professional Bass Certificate from Berklee College of Music. I am certain that this will enhance my understanding of the bass guitar. As a self-taught musician, I am aware that there is still much more to learn. Since I live in California and Berklee is located in Boston, I will be enrolling in Berklee Online. In addition to that certificate, I am currently working towards a certificate in Commercial Music from my community college. I’m also considering pursuing a degree from Musicians Institute because I believe more education is always beneficial. They offer degrees tailored to your chosen instrument, which I find particularly appealing. I could get a degree in bass guitar!
During my high school years, I had the privilege of being a member of the worship band. We performed weekly at chapel and various school events. I really loved being on the team because I learned so much. My wonderful music teacher guided me in the right direction, helping me memorize the notes on the bass fretboard and learn how to read chord charts. Currently, I’m gaining valuable experience as a member of my church’s worship band. This opportunity has also provided me with numerous learning experiences. I’ve developed professional skills and gained experience performing in front of an audience. I’m so glad I am learning this now because I know it will greatly assist me in my musical future.
I hope to impact the world through music by sharing my talent and knowledge with others who may not know as much as I do. I would love for the bass guitar to be given more attention, as some people don’t realize how much it contributes to music. This scholarship would be a tremendous help in obtaining my certificates, and I would be incredibly grateful for it.

Despite not coming from a musical family, I wanted to learn a musical instrument. I chose the violin and began taking lessons. Learning fast, I was able to play nursery rhymes pretty quickly. However, I didn’t feel passionate enough about the violin.
Surprisingly, I decided to try the electric guitar! It was quite a switch going from the classical violin to a loud electric guitar. I loved it! Since this occurred during the pandemic, no in-person lessons were being offered. I decided to teach myself. Quickly becoming invested in my learning, I borrowed books from the library, downloaded apps, and watched informative videos. I picked up on techniques and styles and was soon playing my favorite songs.
About two years later, I discovered the bass guitar and how it differed from the electric guitar. After carefully considering it, I felt that I had more of a passion for bass. Like the electric guitar, I also taught myself the bass.
Now seventeen years old, I am always looking for more ways to grow my talent. My goal is to make a career for myself in music; possibly as a studio/session musician, a touring musician, and bass player. There are many options.
After high school, I plan to work towards a Professional Bass Certificate from Berklee College of Music. In addition to that certificate, I am currently working towards a certificate in Commercial Music from my community college. I am also looking into a degree from Musicians Institute because more education will always be beneficial to me. “Fair is foul, and foul is fair/Hover through the fog and filthy air” (Macbeth 1.1.11-12).
I will be analyzing Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
Good and evil. Right and wrong. Fair and foul. Analyzing Shakespeare’s work is definitely deceptive; he can make you think a story is going one way and then flip it around all of a sudden. “Fair is foul and foul is fair” is spoken by three witches in the first scene (Macbeth 1.1.11). They are conveying that appearances can be deceiving and you shouldn’t believe everything you see. This line sets the ghostly mood of the play, foreshadows what’s going to happen throughout the story, and throws around the idea of fate and free will.
Setting the mood of Macbeth is nicely done by strategically placing “Fair is foul and foul is fair” (Macbeth 1.1.11) at the beginning of the play. By doing so, it could give someone the wrong idea of how the play is going to conclude. In Act 1, the witches tell Macbeth that he will be king and after being persuaded by his wife, he jumps into action and takes matters into his own hands. The Macbeths decide to murder Duncan but afterwards Macbeth is afraid and feels guilt because he killed the king and it took place right in his own home.
As the play progresses, he becomes more confident in his actions by committing more murders. I would describe the mood in Act 1 scene 1 as paranormal because there are witches (and later ghosts) involved. The witches are cooking up a strange mixture while eagerly anticipating the arrival of Macbeth. Macbeth is coming to see them in order to receive another prophecy. Later, in Act 4, the witches are up to something new.
“Double, double, toil, and trouble/Fire burn, and cauldron bubble” (Macbeth 4.1.10-11). Here, the witches are up to no good. They manipulate Macbeth by prophesying to him and convincing him to believe what they say. Macbeth is getting impatient because by this time, Macduff is in England gathering Malcolm and an army in order to overthrow Macbeth. He anxiously wants to see how his life is going to turn out. The witches tell Macbeth to beware Macduff, no man born of woman can harm him, and that he is not in danger until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane. The witches consider good to be evil and evil to be good. I believe this is why the witches are sucking Macbeth into their world and making him fall for anything they tell him.
Foreshadowing what is going to take place in the future, the witches create confusion in the mind of Macbeth. Their predictions seem pretty fair to Macbeth because it makes him king. However, they eventually end in disastrous consequences for him. Even though their problematic prophecies come true, the witches still cause plenty of damage. As a result of their prophecies in Act 1 scene 1, the kingdom is completely torn apart and disrupted after the murder of King Duncan. Macbeth slowly loses his mind, Malcolm and Donalbain run away, nature gets disturbed, Macbeth orders the assassination of his best friend Banquo, and Fleance escapes.
The escape of Fleance is crucial because he could attempt to overthrow Macbeth off the throne. In fact, the witches even warn Macbeth about this happening which leads him to order both Banquo and Fleance to be murdered: Because he is Banquo’s son, Fleance has some connection to the throne and the witches previously prophesied that someone in Banquo’s family will be on the throne.
In addition to the prophecies being fulfilled, the idea of fate and free will is present. I imagine Macbeth did have the opportunity to do right; he did not have to kill King Duncan. All the witches told him was that he was going to be king; why should he believe what they have to say? Macbeth was not even next in line to the throne; Malcolm was by virtue of being the king’s oldest son. Macbeth gets more and more confident with each murder committed as his mind is so focused on securing his position as king. He even loses his feelings of guilt and ignores his conscience.
At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is a loved, respected, and successful war hero. By the end, his selfish pride, paranoia and guilt lead to his downfall. Proverbs 29:1 states that whoever remains stubborn after corrections, will be destroyed. Macbeth remained stubborn, did not accept correction, and was eventually defeated and killed.
“Fair is foul and foul is fair” (Macbeth 1.1.11) explores the concept of fate and free will while also foreshadowing the future of this mystic play. The witches contribute to the mood and create the foreshadowing for the story. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have the prophecies or all the foreshadowing.
Through Macbeth’s selfishness, pride, and greed, he leads himself into destruction. All the witches’ predictions turned out to be correct and the prophecies were fulfilled. Good and evil. Right and wrong. Fair and foul. These attributes could lead someone to success or failure. Macbeth is a memorable tale because if you were in Macbeth’s shoes, would you let the witches lead you into the dark side of ambition?

Music has been a part of my educational journey since I was twelve years old. Despite not coming from a musical family, I wanted to learn a musical instrument. I am confident my college education will greatly expand my knowledge on the bass guitar. Being self taught, I know there is plenty more to learn. I hope to impact the world through music by sharing my talent, skills, and passion with others to build friendships that will last a lifetime.
I give to my community by using my talent to make my school a better place. Currently serving as a member of my high school’s worship team, I feel that I am using my talent for the best. We play every week at chapel and at school events. I love being on the team because I have learned so much. For example, before I joined the band I was only reading guitar tablature. They used chord sheets and my music teacher graciously taught me what I needed to know. Now, I have memorized every note on the bass fretboard and use chord sheets every day. It is something I am so glad that I learned now because I know it will greatly help me in my musical future. I will be very sad when I graduate high school in May, as I will no longer be playing in the band.
In the future, I want to get involved in other band projects and use my talent to do something I am passionate about!

The selection I chose to write about is from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, which I paid close attention to the quote “Fair is foul and foul is fair”.

In fact, the witches even warn Macbeth about this happening which leads him to order both Banquo and Fleance to be murdered: “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none/So all hail, Macbeth and Banquo” (Macbeth 1.3.67-68). Because he is Banquo’s son, Fleance has some connection to the throne and the witches previously prophesied that someone in Banquo’s family will be on the throne.

Despite not coming from a musical family, I wanted to learn a musical instrument. I chose the violin and began taking lessons. Learning fast, I was able to play nursery rhymes pretty quickly. I didn’t feel passionate enough about the violin. Surprisingly, I decided to try the electric guitar! It was quite a switch going from the classical violin to a loud electric guitar. I loved it! Since this occurred during the pandemic, no in-person lessons were being offered. So, I decided to teach myself.
Soon, I was the excited owner of a bass guitar. Like the electric guitar, I also taught myself the bass. Now seventeen years old, I am always looking for more ways to grow my talent. My goal is to make a career for myself in music; possibly as a studio musician, a session musician, or bass player. There are many options.
After high school, I plan to work towards a Professional Bass Certificate from Berklee College of Music. In addition to the certificate, an Associate degree from Musician's Institute will be very beneficial to me as well. I am confident my college education will greatly expand my knowledge on the bass guitar. Being self taught, I know there is plenty more to learn. For example, I only know how to read chord sheets and tablature. If I want to be the best musician I can be, I will need to learn how to read sheet music. I hope to impact the world through music by sharing my talent, skills, and passion with others to build friendships that will last a lifetime.
Currently serving as a member of my high school’s worship team, I feel that I am using my talent for the best. We play every week at chapel and at school events. I love being on the team because I have learned so much. For example, before I joined the band I was only reading guitar tablature. They used chord sheets and my music teacher and fellow teammates graciously taught me what I needed to know. Now, I have memorized every note on the bass fretboard and use chord sheets every day. It is something I am so glad that I learned now because I know it will greatly help me in my musical future. I will be sad when I graduate high school, as I will no longer be playing in the band.
I am passionate about music because it gives purpose and reason to life. There is nothing better than listening to your favorite song and playing your instrument along with it. In my case, I play my bass guitar while listening to music. I feel it is the best way for me to practice.
In the future, I want to get involved in other band projects and use my talent to do something I am passionate about!

I believe music is important to society because it unites us. It brings us together. It knows no barriers. People from different countries and cultures can all listen to the same music and understand it. You don’t even have to speak the same language to understand it.

For a Christian to be salt and light means that you are to shine like a light in the darkness. If salt becomes tasteless, it can't be made salty again. Salt flavors and light shines; therefore you should be that kind of Christian. But don't be too salty or you will lose your worth. Worthless salt is no good and is thrown out. We should let our light shine for our Father in heaven to see our good works. This applies to me personally because I am always trying to stand out from others; shine like a light in the darkness and do good things.
You are supposed to love and value God the most. That is why we were created to have a relationship with him. If we don't put him first and above everything else in life, it is considered idolatry. Jesus states that loving the Lord with all your heart, soul, and mind is the greatest commandment of all. I can apply this to my life because I am always trying to become a better person and the first step to getting there is placing God above everything else. Praying to him and involving him in your life and everything you do should be your number one priority.
The ultimate motivation that caused God to create the world is love. Love is giving and meeting needs without expecting anything in return. God has been loving forever and always will love. God is love. He gave and sent his only son to us so that we could live free lives. Before God ever created the world, he was loving his son. This applies to my life because to know that God loves me even though I don't deserve it, makes me feel very good and worthy.
Being created in the image of God is important because it makes us all equal and of the same value. It is also important because we are made to be like him so that we can have long, loving, intimate relationships with him. In fact, the self-esteem movement developed because when people didn't look to God for love and value, they began looking elsewhere for it. This applies to my life because I know why I am here and why I was made. It gives me purpose and reason.
Having a biblical worldview has impacted me personally because it filters how I see the world. It distinguishes for me what is right and wrong. It helps me live a life that God wants to see. You must know what the Bible says before you begin to let it tell you how to live. The Bible tells you why you should live the way you live.

I’ve chosen music because it is what I love to do. My future goal is to make a career for myself out of playing the bass guitar. After high school, I plan to work towards a Professional Bass Certificate from Berklee College of Music. I am confident it will expand my knowledge on the bass guitar. Being self taught, I know there is plenty more to learn. I hope to impact the world through music by sharing my talent and knowledge with others who may not know as much as I do. In the future I want to get involved in band projects and use my talent to do something I am passionate about!
One Chance Scholarship
When I was around eleven or twelve years old, I began to show an interest in music. Despite not coming from a musical family, I wanted to learn a musical instrument. I chose the violin and began taking lessons. Learning fast, I was able to play nursery rhymes in a month. Something wasn’t right; I didn’t feel passionate enough about the violin. Surprisingly, I decided to try the electric guitar! It was quite a switch going from the classical violin to a loud electric guitar. But I loved it! I never took any lessons. I taught myself and used library books, apps, and videos.
About two years later, I discovered what a bass guitar was and how it differed from the electric guitar. After carefully considering it, I felt that I had more of a passion for bass. I am now seventeen years old and have been teaching myself the bass guitar. My future goal is to make a career for myself out of the bass guitar. After high school, I plan to work towards a Professional Bass Certificate from Berklee College of Music. This scholarship could help me earn that certificate. I am confident it will expand my knowledge on the bass guitar. Being self taught, I know there is plenty more to learn.
I hope to impact the world through music by sharing my talent and knowledge with others who may not know as much as I do. I would love for the bass guitar to be looked at with more depth as some people do not realize how much the bass guitar adds to music.
Currently serving as a member of my school’s worship team, I feel that I am using my talent for the best. I will be very sad when I graduate in May and am no longer playing in the band. In the future I want to get involved in other band projects and use my talent to do something I am passionate about!
