Bio

Hello! Kumusta! My name is Geena Mitts. I am a 26 year old Dental Hygiene student in Seattle, Washington. I am a proud Filipina! I love eating, cooking, health, fitness, exploring, and making other people smile and laugh. My current goal is to graduate from my dental hygiene program and pass all my boards. While in school I want to receive 1 scholarship per semester! I am very passionate about educating people about their dental health in relation to their overall health and dentistry in general. I am also passionate about constantly learning new things and trying out new interests. I am a great candidate to win scholarships because my school is extremely expensive and I am taking out loans to live as well because I am not able to work. I hope I am able to win as many as possible to reduce the financial stress I will get once I graduate. I would like to focus my money after graduation in buying a home and helping my dad retire.

    Coty Crisp Memorial Scholarship
As a lesbian in the dental field, I’ve faced unique challenges related to both my identity and the expectations of the profession. Early on in my training, I was concerned about how my sexual orientation might affect my relationships with patients and colleagues. In a clinical setting, where professionalism is paramount, I worried that revealing my identity might lead to bias or discomfort. There were times I hesitated to share personal details, unsure of how patients or staff might react. While most of my experiences have been positive, there have been moments of uncertainty—especially when working with patients from more conservative backgrounds. In some cases, I feared that my orientation might affect the trust or rapport I had worked hard to build. This sometimes made me question how much of myself I could be in the workplace without risking alienation. However, over time, I’ve learned that authenticity is essential to providing the best care. Being open about my identity has allowed me to connect more deeply with patients, especially those from the LGBTQ+ community who may feel hesitant or uncomfortable in healthcare settings. I’ve also come to realize that embracing my own identity gives me a unique perspective and empowers me to advocate for LGBTQ+ patients, ensuring they feel seen and respected during their visits. As I continue my career in dentistry, I aim to create a safe, inclusive environment where all patients—regardless of their sexual orientation—feel comfortable discussing their oral health needs. My experiences as a lesbian in the dental field have reinforced my commitment to providing compassionate care and advocating for a more diverse and inclusive healthcare system. Being a lesbian in the healthcare field has also inspired me to be an advocate for LGBTQ+ patients and colleagues. I’ve worked to ensure that patients feel seen and understood regardless of their sexual orientation, creating an environment where they can be comfortable discussing their health concerns without fear of discrimination. My own experiences of navigating this space have given me a unique perspective that allows me to approach patient care with a heightened sense of empathy, knowing that everyone has their own struggles and barriers—some visible and others not. In conclusion, while my sexual orientation has presented certain challenges, it has also shaped my approach to patient care, helping me build stronger relationships and advocate for a more inclusive dental practice. Embracing my identity allows me to offer the best care while helping create a welcoming environment for everyone.
    Dental Hygiene Basics Scholarship
My passion for dental hygiene began with a personal experience that highlighted the profound impact oral health has on overall well-being. Growing up, I myself struggled with dental issues that affected my confidence and social interactions. I realized how much of a difference proper oral care could make, not just in terms of appearance, but in how it could influence someone's quality of life. Going to the dentist was always an uplifting experience for me. I am drawn to dental hygiene because it combines science, education, and direct patient care in a way that allows me to make a tangible difference in people’s lives every day. Throughout my academic journey, I have sought out opportunities to deepen my understanding of the dental field. I worked as a dental assistant and worked at local free dental clinics in Seattle, Washington where I shadowed dental hygienists and assisting with patient care, which solidified my desire to work in this field. I was particularly inspired by how hygienists not only provide clinical care but also serve as educators, teaching patients about the importance of oral hygiene and preventive care. This experience reinforced my commitment to pursuing a degree in dental hygiene. In terms of academic achievements, I have worked hard to excel in the classes such as anatomy and oral pathology-subjects that are essential to the field of dental hygiene. I have maintained a strong GPA and participated in extracurricular activities related to health and wellness, such as health fairs, government meetings, and community outreach programs, where I have had the opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. These experiences have equipped me with both the academic foundation and the passion to pursue this profession. Looking ahead, I hope to specialize in patient education and preventive care, helping individuals understand the long-term impact of their oral health choices. I am particularly interested in working with underserved communities and children/teens to address oral health disparities. Many individuals lack access to dental care and education, and I want to contribute to reducing those barriers by promoting accessible and preventive oral health care. Additionally, I plan to pursue continuing education and certifications to stay current with advances in the field, ensuring that I can provide the highest standard of care to my patients. Receiving this scholarship would also enable me to participate in additional training opportunities, conferences, and workshops that would enhance my knowledge and professional growth. It would help me stay financially stable while continuing my education and ultimately allow me to contribute to the field of dental hygiene with a strong foundation and a deep sense of purpose. In summary, my academic and professional goals align with the need for preventive care and patient education in the field. I am committed to contributing to the well-being of individuals through my work. This scholarship would provide essential financial support, allowing me to focus on achieving my educational goals and, ultimately, making a meaningful difference in the lives of my future patients.
