From a young age, I’ve always felt a deep calling to help others, especially during their most vulnerable and urgent moments. Emergency medicine, in particular, captured my interest early on, offering a unique intersection of compassion, quick thinking, and lifesaving skills. What started as a childhood curiosity quickly evolved into a lifelong passion for serving my community.
In 2022, I joined Exchange Ambulance of the Islip as a Youth Squad member. What began as a volunteer opportunity soon became an integral part of who I am. Over the years, I’ve grown both personally and professionally through hands-on experience and mentorship from seasoned EMTs and paramedics. Now, as I continue to work toward becoming a senior core member of the organization, I’m more committed than ever to providing the highest standard of prehospital care to those in need.
While balancing high school academics, I enrolled in Suffolk County Community College’s (SCCC) evening EMT-Basic program. Taking college level coursework while completing my senior year of high school was challenging, but it solidified my desire to make emergency medicine my lifelong career. I have since been accepted into SCCC’s Associate of Science Paramedic Program, where I plan to deepen my clinical knowledge and field experience. Each class, lab, and clinical shift brings me closer to becoming the healthcare provider I aspire to be.
But my goals extend even further. After earning my associate degree, I plan to attend either SUNY Stony Brook or the CUNY School of Medicine to pursue a career as either a medical doctor or a physician assistant in a hospital emergency trauma capacity. Both paths will allow me to blend advanced medical training with my passion for community service, ultimately enabling me to impact even more lives.
In addition to my EMS work, I will soon be joining the Islip Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter a family tradition that spans four generations. My father, grandfather, and great grandfather have all served our community with honor, and I’m proud to follow in their footsteps. For my family, service isn't just a duty, it’s a way of life. Their example has taught me that giving back isn’t a choice, it’s a responsibility, one I carry with pride.
My ultimate goal is not just to treat illness or injury but to be a reliable and compassionate presence in times of crisis. Whether I am riding in an ambulance, working in an emergency room, or responding to a fire, I aim to be someone that my community can count on. Through continued education, volunteer service, and a steadfast dedication to others, I hope to make a lasting, positive impact on every life I touch.
Serving others isn’t just what I do, it’s who I am at my core. This scholarship would allow me to continue my journey with fewer financial burdens and greater focus, helping me grow into the kind of healthcare provider my community deserves.
Thank you for your time and consideration in reviewing my application for the Gregory A DeCanio memorial scholarship.
