The biggest lesson I have learned from golf is the importance of integrity and doing the right thing even when it is difficult. Golf is a unique sport because players are responsible for keeping their own score and following the rules, even when no one else is watching. That level of trust requires honesty and strong character, and it has shaped the way I approach challenges both on and off the course.
My favorite part of golf is that it gives me an excuse to get outside and enjoy nature while still competing and having fun. Spending hours on a course surrounded by trees, fresh air, and open space is something I really value. Golf has become a great outlet for me mentally because it allows me to clear my head and focus on the moment. Being outside while playing a sport I love helps me stay balanced when life gets busy with school and other responsibilities.
Golf is also meaningful to me because it is one of the few activities my dad and I consistently get to do together. We both have busy schedules, so it can be hard to find time to slow down and spend a few hours together. When we play golf, we get that opportunity. Some of my favorite memories with my dad have come from playing rounds together at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin. Seeing the community rally around the course through the Save Muny movement has also shown me how much golf can mean to people. Lions Municipal is more than just a golf course; it is a historic place where people from all backgrounds have been able to experience the game. Watching the effort to preserve it helped me realize how important it is to protect spaces that make golf accessible to the community.
One of the biggest challenges I have faced in golf involved a situation where another player on my team was dishonest about his score. I put a lot of time and effort into improving my game, so it was frustrating to feel like that hard work did not matter when someone else was not playing fairly. For a while, I struggled with whether I should say something or just ignore it. Eventually, I realized that staying silent would go against the values that golf is supposed to represent. I decided to approach my coach and respectfully explain what was happening and how it was affecting me.
That conversation was uncomfortable, but it taught me an important lesson about standing up for what is right. Integrity sometimes requires courage, especially when speaking up is not easy. In the future, I plan to carry that lesson with me into college and my career. I also hope to stay involved in the game by helping introduce others to golf and supporting courses like Lions Municipal that make the sport accessible to the community. Golf has taught me that character is built through the choices we make, and I will continue striving to live by those values in everything I do.

Scott A. Ross Memorial Golf Scholarship
My favorite part of playing golf is that it gives me an excuse to get outside and enjoy nature while still competing and having fun. Spending hours on a course surrounded by trees, fresh air, and open space is something I really value. Growing up in a busy city like Austin, it can be easy to spend most of the day indoors, so golf gives me a reason to slow down and appreciate being outside. Walking the course, focusing on each shot, and taking in the environment around me helps me clear my mind. It has become one of the best ways for me to reset mentally and take a break from school and other responsibilities. Being outside while playing a sport I love has been great for my mental health and helps me stay balanced.
Golf is also important to me because it is one of the few activities that my dad and I consistently get to do together. Both of us have busy schedules, so it can be hard to find time to just spend a few hours together. When we play golf, we get that time. Whether we are practicing at the range or playing a full round, it gives us a chance to talk, compete a little, and enjoy each other’s company. Some of my favorite memories with my dad have happened on the golf course, and that time together is something I really value.
Golf has also had a big impact on my character. It is a sport that depends heavily on honesty and integrity. Players are responsible for keeping their own score and following the rules even when no one else is paying attention. That responsibility has taught me the importance of doing the right thing even when it might be easier not to. Playing on my school’s varsity golf team has also taught me discipline and patience. Golf is a sport where improvement takes time, and success usually comes from consistent effort and practice.
One challenge I have had to overcome involved dealing with a teammate who was dishonest about his score. I put a lot of time and effort into improving my game, so it was frustrating to feel like that hard work was being overlooked because someone else was not playing fairly. For a while, I struggled with whether I should say something or just ignore it. Eventually, I realized that staying silent would not solve the problem. I decided to approach my coach and respectfully explain what was happening and how it was affecting me.
That conversation was uncomfortable, but it taught me an important lesson about standing up for what is right. It also helped me understand the value of communicating honestly, even in difficult situations. Golf has challenged me in many ways, but experiences like that have helped me grow as a person and strengthened my commitment to integrity, hard work, and respect for the game.
