First-Gen in Health & Medicine Scholarship
Being the first in my family to even show an interest in medicine has brought a backlash, especially from my step-father, a deputy with the local sheriff department, who almost daily points out the negatives to the practice, for example, malpractice, but while he has gone and tried to steer me away from medicine, my Mother has shown a great interest in my interest, even buying me a Littman's stethoscope for Christmas, and a Netter's Anatomy & Physiology atlas, even though I am only in high school! My Step-Father has taught me valuable lessons that one day I will be able to bring to the job, such as perseverance. Whereas my mom has done everything in her power to 'beef up' my extracurriculars, whether that be by driving me down to Beaumont to volunteer on Saturdays, or helping pay for a medical camp, such as CampMED hosted by Central Michigan University in the summer, she even helped me get involved with a research group at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, where I worked alongside Undergraduates and professors on cancer research. Being a first-generation to show interest in medicine has led to a great gain, whether that be my mental attitude or my application down the line.
Scholarcash Role Model Scholarship
As a 15 year old I was hospitalized for 7 months with multiple health problems. Among those were meningitis, a Naegleria Fowleri Infection, pneumonia and malaria. Those are the ones that they could figure out. In the past 4 months since release from the hospital I coughup around 60 ml of blood daily, and about once a month I am back in ER to get fluids do to Dehydration. THroughout this time there have been doctors and nurses that have shown compassion and care beyond that I had ever seen in life, coming from a family with an abusive step-father of course, but it moved me to see the people in the hospitals work long hours day and night to care for others, and now I have made up my mind to be one of those people.

While Serving as a CNA in William Beaumont Hospital, I entered a patient’s room, only to see their vitals unresponsive, no pulse or respiration rate, I immediately began to perform CPR, waiting for the actual nurse to arrive. Afterward, the patient was placed back into the ICU and I was told that had it not been for my quick response the patient would have not made it.
