James B. McKillip Scholarship for Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy is important to me because I feel fulfilled when I can improve someone's quality of life. For me, physical therapy gives me a sense of meaning and is one of the reasons I feel as though I was put on this earth... To help others whenever I can... To help them discover what they can control when the world around them seems uncontrollable. That to me is what drives my passion for physical therapy and why physical therapy is important to me. I hope to make numerous contributions to the field of physical therapy one day. After school, I would like to help conduct research and to help pioneer the way of physical therapy. At this time I am in contact with a few researchers and plan on splitting my time in both the clinical setting as well as the research setting. I feel that the world of physical therapy is underexplored regarding research, and I would love to help identify best practice guidelines for other physical therapists. Once on my feet and once I have more experience in the field, I would love to collaborate with engineers on innovating or creating new assistive devices that can help improve the quality of life for patients. I believe many of the devices that are on the market now are overpriced and can be improved upon. As our lives around us change every day we need devices that can accommodate those changes. Following down that path, I plan to enter the political realm in the future once I make a name for myself. I hope to become an advocate for not only the patients I see but for all patients who are receiving physical therapy. There are numerous ways physical therapy can be improved upon, many of which require the legislative system to pass. Overall, I hope one day I will be seen as an innovator in the world of physical therapy and that I can make improvements not only for the profession but primarily for the patients. I acknowledge that these are some lofty goals, however, I believe that my drive for fulfillment will get me there. I also acknowledge that there are many steps to completing each of these goals and I am excited to conquer each one. No goal is a stopping point, but rather a checkpoint until I reach the next. In the end, my contribution to the world of physical therapy will make an impact not only on the profession but also on the patients.
