Bio

My love for cars and racing drives me towards a career as an auto mechanic. My plan is to attend WyoTech in Laramie, Wyoming starting this fall to get my certificate to work as an automotive technician. When my dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer last year, our time together changed. Instead of being able to bike, hike, hunt, kayak, ski, and do adventure charity mud runs together because of his health; we bonded over our love for F1 and Indy Car racing and spent our time that way. We attended our first Indy Car race in Nashville, Tennessee as part of a “bucket list” summer adventure trip. I was immediately hooked on racing and fascinated by the fast-paced action of the pit crews and support teams. The classes in high school that captured my passion and attention were always the classes that required me to work with my hands. I enjoy figuring out how things work and how they tick, taking things apart and putting them back together. Last summer I started an internship at RDO Equipment working on construction and industrial equipment and learning a lot about diesel repairs. It has been a great experience and I learned a lot; but I also discovered that diesel is not my passion. My ultimate goal is to work myself onto a travel racing team. I would love to be able to visit new places, and to work with other talented mechanics as part of a team; a skill I learned playing hockey for nine years. I would also love to refinish and restore classic cars. Because of my dad’s cancer and treatment, my parents are unable to contribute to my education the way that they wanted to.

Last summer I started an internship at RDO Equipment working on construction and industrial equipment and learning a lot about diesel repairs. It has been a great experience and I am learning a lot, but I also discovered that diesel is not my passion, even though I spend a lot of time on my grandfather’s farm and know that farmers and ranchers work hard to feed the world. Diesel mechanics work to keep their equipment running and that helps to keep them operating. I am grateful to have been able to learn about diesel and to have that skill set, but my ultimate goal is to work myself onto a travel racing team, which is not an easy task. Most of the mechanics on these teams had to start with small local teams and work their way up, and I am prepared to work as hard as I need to to get to the top levels of racing. There are very few positions at the top in F1 and IndyCar but I am motivated to make it happen. That is my “dare to dream” goal. I would love to be able to visit new places, to explore the world, and to work with other talented mechanics as part of a team; a skill I learned playing hockey for nine years. I know that I wasn’t the best or most talented hockey player but my work ethic stood out to my coaches and teammates. I always showed up and gave my very best. I would also love to refinish and restore classic cars. I am interested in aftermarket parts, chassis, and high-performance engines. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship and for supporting the trades.

Mail connects the world. A simple postage stamp can bring a card or note a thousand miles in a day or two and has so much more impact than a text or email. My grandfather was a stamp collector, and hearing him talk about his collection was fascinating. Each stamp had its own story and possibly an epic journey. Maybe it was flown, driven, walked, or even delivered by boat. Maybe it was sent to a diplomat or a soldier in a war zone yearning to connect with home. It could have been five dollars from my grandma, just because she wanted to reach out. Maybe it never left its home town or maybe it traveled the globe. Like cars, stamps are meant to be used, and that postmark means it has done its duty, it was used to connect two people. I would encourage young people to hang onto this history, it is worthy of studying. My love for cars and racing drives me towards a career as an auto mechanic. I also spend a lot of time on my grandfathers farm and know that farmers and ranchers work hard to feed the world. Diesel mechanics work to keep their equipment running and that helps to keep them operating. As they say “you’ve got to make hay while the sun shines” and that often takes the dedication of skilled diesel mechanics. I am grateful to have been able to learn about diesel and have that skillset, but my ultimate goal is to work myself onto a travel racing team. I am interested in aftermarket parts, chassis, and high performance engines. My parents had hoped to contribute more to my education, but my dad’s cancer has changed their financial situation and a scholarship would be extremely helpful to me to be able to finish my automotive program without additional debt. Anthony McPherson Memorial Automotive Scholarship
My love for cars and racing drives me towards a career as an auto mechanic. My plan is to attend WyoTech in Laramie, Wyoming starting this fall to get my certificate to work as an automotive technician. I also am obsessed with safety, and that starts with never driving under the influence or driving while distracted. I value my life and lives of those around me. I was immediately hooked on racing and fascinated by the fast paced action of the pit crews and support teams. The classes in high school that capture my passion and attention are always the classes that require me to work with my hands like welding, small engine repair, diesel tech, and automotive tech. I enjoy figuring out how things work and how they tick, taking things apart and putting them back together. Last summer I started an internship at RDO Equipment working on farm, construction, and industrial equipment and I am learning a lot about diesel repairs. It has been a great experience. I also spend a lot of time on my grandfathers farm and know that farmers and ranchers work hard to feed the world. Diesel mechanics work to keep their equipment running and that helps to keep them operating. I know that weather can have dramatic impacts on them and they need their equipment ready and running smoothly especially during planting and at harvest time. As they say “you’ve got to make hay while the sun shines” and that often takes the dedication of skilled diesel mechanics. I am grateful to have been able to learn about diesel and have that skillset, but my ultimate goal is to work myself onto a travel racing team. I would like to be able to visit new places, and to work with other talented mechanics as part of a team; a skill I learned playing hockey for nine years. I would also love to refinish and restore classic cars. To take something that has been abandoned and bring it back to life and use. I am interested in aftermarket parts, chassis, and high performance engines. My parents had hoped to contribute more to my education, but my dad’s cancer has changed their financial situation and a scholarship would be extremely helpful to me to be able to finish my automotive program without additional debt. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship and for supporting the trades.

My dad is the most caring and kind person that I know. He is kind even when he is in an incredible amount of pain. His smile and positive attitude are infectious and have taught me to do my best to strive for that in my own life. If you were to call my hockey coach he would tell you what he wrote in a recommendation letter for me: “Garrett has the drive and determination to doing everything he could to attain the skills he needed. Two large components of being a great athlete are being humble and being a great teammate. Those are two things that Garrett excels at. He shows up every day ready to work, and gives everything he has for his teammates. He will catch whatever dream he chases in life. If I had to bet on a young man to succeed and prove me right, I would bet on Garrett Bell.” Thank you for considering me for this scholarship and for supporting the trades.

My parents had hoped to be able to help pay for college, but are struggling to because my dad has been unable to work regularly because of his treatments and health and because treating cancer is expensive. I am working hard after school, during summers, and on weekends to save up enough to be able to pay for my tuition at WyoTech. A scholarship would be very helpful and I would really appreciate receiving this help to be able to work on my dream of becoming an auto mechanic and to help me acquire the skills that I need to pursue this passion and to help my family. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for considering me for this scholarship opportunity.
