In high school, I had the honor of serving as the volunteer coordinator for the Black Student Union (BSU) on campus, where I learned that leadership isn't just about delegating tasks; it’s about creating a bridge between a community's needs and the resources available to help. My most significant initiative was a collaborative outreach project with a dedicated non-profit in Riviera Beach, Florida. The goal was to support their annual holiday spirit event, a massive undertaking aimed at providing gifts, resources, and an overall fun experience for underprivileged children in the area during the holiday season. Organizing this was a complex puzzle of logistics and human coordination. To make it happen, I first reached out to the outreach organization to understand their specific needs—what kind of help they required, how many volunteers they wanted, and how we could best support their existing workflow and operations. I had the responsibility of maintaining effective communication between the organization and the BSU, and then, of course, translating that information into a clear, actionable plan for my BSU members. I managed sign-ups and assisted in organizing transportation to and from Riviera Beach, ensuring that every volunteer understood the importance of their role in showing up for the community and representing the BSU and our school as a whole. When the day of the event arrived, operations ran smoothly. When my fellow BSU volunteers and I arrived, we immediately got to work unboxing toys and setting them up. The impact was just as immediate. Seeing the joy on the children’s faces as they received gifts and enjoyed all the day's activities made all the emails and logistical hurdles completely worth it. Beyond just handing out toys, we acted as a support system for the organizers, helping to set up the venue, manage crowds, and ensure that the event ran smoothly for the families. Many of my fellow BSU members expressed how much they enjoyed the experience and felt a sense of fulfillment; it moved beyond just "getting hours" and became about fostering a genuine connection and a sense of community with our neighbors. This experience solidified my belief that leadership through service is the most effective form of influence. When you lead by serving, you earn trust because you aren’t just telling people what to do; you are in the fire with them, working toward a shared goal that is bigger than yourself. It demands a level of empathy that pure management often lacks. Having just finished my first year as a pre-med student at the University of Miami, this is a truth I have internalized and carried with me into my college career. During my freshman year, I was honored to be accepted into the Freshman Leadership Academy (FLA) through the University of Miami's largest Black student organization, United Black Students (UBS). One of our major responsibilities was planning Thump, the organization's biannual block party for the entire University of Miami community. While I contributed to the planning and organization leading up to the event, my role on the day of the event looked much different: I volunteered by serving pizza and drinks, scanning student ID cards, and helping ensure everything ran smoothly. This experience served as another reminder of the importance of shifting the perspective of leadership from a position of authority to something that is demonstrated through a willingness to serve wherever needed.

Growing up, I was always curious about how things worked, but nothing fascinated me more than the human body. When I was just a little child, my dad, who was ironically not a medical professional, would read a human anatomy book to my sister and me, and I remember being completely captivated by it. That fascination lay dormant as I grew older, but it never disappeared. The constant curiosity, the endless questions of why, were quietly leading me toward medicine all along. It was not until my ninth-grade biology class in high school, when every student was assigned to create and label a diagram of the brain, that the seed my father had planted so many years earlier began to grow again. As I came to terms with this renewed passion, I began seriously considering pursuing a career in medicine, and before long, I was telling my parents that I wanted to become a physician. As I continued learning about biology and human anatomy, I realized that medicine uniquely combines science, innovation, compassion, and problem-solving in a way that can profoundly change people's lives. To me, a career in medicine is more than a profession—it is a lifelong commitment to serving others, providing hope during life's most difficult moments, and improving the quality of life for patients and their families. Beyond my fascination with medicine as a science, what keeps me dedicated is the opportunity it provides to serve my community. Every breakthrough in medicine represents years of scientific research, technological innovation, and collaboration, but behind every advancement is a patient whose life can be transformed. To me, that is the most rewarding aspect of this pursuit: the opportunity to be a source of hope and a blessing in the lives of others during their most vulnerable moments. As a Black woman and pre-medical student at the University of Miami, I have dedicated myself to excelling academically while serving my community. Throughout high school and currently into my college years, I have volunteered extensively in my community; one of my most notable volunteer positions has been in the pre-operative department of a local hospital, where I witnessed firsthand how compassionate healthcare professionals could ease patients' fears before surgery. Those experiences have only reinforced my desire to pursue medicine, as they demonstrated a truth I already knew but had never fully witnessed: healing involves not only treating disease but also offering comfort, empathy, and reassurance. I have long said that I want to be a physician who views their patients not simply as a body with a disease or another problem to solve, but rather as a person—a human being going through what could be one of the most difficult times of their life. For any healthcare professional, your “just another day” may be someone else’s world collapsing. Receiving this scholarship would help relieve the financial burden of pursuing a demanding education, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies, research opportunities, clinical experiences, and volunteer service in order to best prepare my application for medical school. Beyond relieving the financial strain, it would alleviate the mental stress that often accompanies funding higher education. Rather than worrying about educational expenses, I could comfortably devote more time to developing the knowledge, technical skills, and bedside manner necessary to become an exceptional physician. This support would be instrumental in bridging the gap between my current academic foundation and my future career, ensuring that I can continue my education to achieve this dream of mine—not only for myself, but for the future patients and families whose lives I hope to impact with compassion.

As I learned more about biology and human anatomy in school, I realized that medicine combines science, innovation, compassion, and problem-solving in a way that can profoundly change people's lives. That realization inspired me to pursue a degree in biology on the pre-medical track with the goal of becoming a physician. To me, a career in medicine is more than a profession—it is a lifelong commitment to serving others, providing hope during difficult moments, and improving the quality of life for patients and their families. Stories like Kayla’s just strengthen that passion. Despite being born with a rare disease and undergoing so much at such a young age, Kayla lived twenty-three beautiful years and formed her own dreams and aspirations because of the incredible advancements in medical science and the dedication of healthcare professionals. Her perseverance and desire to help others remind me of my own reasons for choosing a STEAM field. Every breakthrough in medicine represents years of scientific research, technological innovation, and collaboration, but behind every advancement is a patient whose life can be transformed. Receiving the Kayla Nicole Monk Scholarship would help relieve the financial burden of pursuing a demanding education, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies, research opportunities, clinical experiences, and volunteer service, in order to best prepare my application for medical school in the coming years. Beyond relieving just the financial burden, it would help relieve the mental stress that accompanies funding any sort of higher education. Rather than worrying about educational expenses, I could comfortably devote more time to developing the knowledge and skills necessary to become an exceptional physician. More importantly, this scholarship would represent an investment in my ability to carry forward Kayla's legacy. Her life demonstrates how medicine can provide hope even in the face of extraordinary challenges. I want to honor that legacy by dedicating my career to helping patients facing serious medical conditions, offering them compassionate care, and striving to improve health outcomes through science and service.

As I look ahead to my future, my ultimate goal is to become a practicing physician who not only excels in providing exceptional patient care but also actively contributes to the well-being of my community. My journey begins with earning a degree in biology, which will serve as the foundation for my future studies in medicine. I am passionate about biology because it provides the framework for understanding the intricate systems of the human body, something I have always been fascinated by. This academic pursuit will not only deepen my knowledge but also prepare me for the rigorous challenges of medical school. Upon graduating with my biology degree, my next goal is to gain acceptance into medical school. I understand that the road ahead will be demanding, but I am driven by my commitment to the field of medicine and my desire to help others. Throughout medical school, I aim to build on my foundational knowledge, acquire new skills, and develop a deep understanding of the human body, disease processes, and treatment options. I look forward to the clinical experiences that will allow me to interact with patients and begin making a direct impact on their health and well-being. After medical school, I am determined to match into a residency program that will provide me with the opportunity to specialize in a field that aligns with my interests and skills. Residency will allow me to further refine my abilities, grow as a professional, and work alongside experienced physicians to continue learning. Beyond my career goals, I am committed to continuing my involvement in community service. Throughout high school and college, I have found great fulfillment in giving back to those in need, whether through volunteer work, mentorship, or organizing community events. As a future physician, I plan to extend my community outreach efforts, especially in underserved populations, and use my platform to promote health education and preventive care. Receiving this scholarship would be a tremendous help as I prepare to attend university. It would ease some of the financial burden and allow me to focus more on my studies and less on worrying about tuition or other expenses like textbooks and supplies. I want to pursue a degree in biology and eventually go to medical school, and every dollar saved now will make a difference in the long run. This scholarship would not only support my academic journey but also allow me to stay involved in my extracurricular activities, like volunteering and athletics, without needing to take on extra jobs to cover costs. It would be a meaningful investment in my education and future.
      Team USA Fan Scholarship
My favorite athlete to cheer for on Team USA is undoubtedly Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. Sydney is a track and field athlete who runs for Team USA, and she currently holds the women's 400m hurdles world record. In my opinion, she is the best woman to ever compete in the 400m hurdles, as she has achieved times no one thought a woman could, and she continues to push the limits of her success. After already breaking her own world record five times, Sydney set a new world record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 50.37 seconds at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France. I run the 400m hurdles at my high school, and I truly love the race. Saying Sydney has been an inspiration to me would be an understatement—and I know the same is true for many track athletes around the world: men and women, young and old. However, I don't just cheer for her because of her greatness and dominance in her event, and in the sport of track and field overall, but also because of her foundation. Sydney is rooted in Christ, and as a Christian myself, I know it can be challenging to find role models in sports who openly share their faith with the world. Sydney is not one to shy away from doing so. She is an unashamed, strong, and faithful believer in Christ, always eager to give God the glory in every avenue of success she travels. I believe that is extremely admirable. She is someone I deeply resonate with and someone I am proud to aspire to resemble.
