Community Health Ambassador Scholarship for Nursing Students
I have a lifelong dream to become a nurse. My passion for nursing was reinforced this past year when I was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. WPW is a congenital heart defect where an extra electrical pathway between the heart's chambers causes rapid heartbeat. My heart rate would suddenly elevate to over 200 beats per minute even while I was resting, followed by chest pain. Experiencing those symptoms was frightening and uncertain, and it led to multiple medical appointments and procedures. I eventually underwent a cardiac ablation to correct the condition. Throughout this experience, the nurses who cared for me were incredibly kind, patient, and reassuring. They took the time to explain what was happening, comfort my family, and make sure I felt safe. Their compassion during such a difficult time confirmed that nursing is the path I want to pursue. I hope one day to provide the same care and reassurance to patients who are facing challenging health conditions. In addition to my personal experiences, I have been committed to serving my community through volunteer work. In July 2024, I volunteered for eight hours with March of Dimes, assisting in organizing a NICU-focused event and preparing educational pamphlets for families with infants in neonatal care. This experience allowed me to support families during a vulnerable time and deepened my interest in patient education and advocacy. I have also volunteered for the past two years at MedStar Health PT, where I have completed approximately 20 hours helping check in patients, clean treatment areas, and filing charts. This role gave me firsthand exposure to a healthcare setting and reinforced the importance of organization, teamwork, and patient interaction. Additionally, I have dedicated over 30 hours volunteering with Pathfinders for Autism, where I supported multiple events, including autism-friendly activities and family nights. I also volunteered as a “soccer buddy” at autism soccer camps, helping participants stay engaged and supported throughout the activities. These experiences have strengthened my communication skills, patience, and ability to connect with individuals of all abilities, which are essential qualities in nursing. In the future, I plan to pursue a career as a registered nurse specializing in cardiac care, inspired by my own experience as a patient. I hope to work in a hospital setting where I can care for patients facing serious heart conditions while providing not only clinical expertise but also emotional support to both patients and their families. I hope to make a meaningful impact both inside and outside the hospital. Beyond caring for patients, I want to give back to the community by volunteering with a nonprofit organization that helps screen children for congenital heart conditions like the one I experienced. Many cardiac issues in young athletes and children go unnoticed because insurance often does not cover EKG screenings during routine physicals. Yet early detection can save lives. I also have a desire to teach CPR to youth and families in my community, so they are prepared to respond in an emergency and potentially save someone’s life. Receiving this scholarship would help make college more affordable, and allow me to continue pursing my dream of becoming a nurse. More importantly, it would support my goal of dedicating my career to helping others through compassionate care, advocacy and community service. My experiences have strengthened my determination to work hard, serve others, and make a positive difference in the lives of patients and their families.
