My mom has always been my biggest cheerleader. She believed in me before I did. Growing up in a single parent household has taught me resilience and strong work ethic. I watched my mom work multiple jobs while going to school and taking care of me. Even during my darkest days dealing with my mental health when I didn’t want to be here anymore my mom never stopped fighting for me. She always told me I was destined to do great things. When Covid hit and the world came to a halt that’s when I discovered my gift, art. I would sit for hours just drawing what I saw. It became my outlet and my voice while being in the house all day. My mom noticed my gift and she invested in me. She bought me a tablet to help develop my gift of drawing. I didn’t believe that I was good I just thought she was being a mom and always supporting me. When the world slowly started going back to normal and I went back to school I really took an interest in art classes and clubs. My junior year of high school I was voted in as Vice President of the Art club. My art teacher noticed my gift and encouraged me to continue to pursue it. At first I didn’t think I was worthy of going to college because I had challenges in school being diagnosed with dyslexia. I always had to work harder to understand and excel but my mom was always there encouraging me. She saw more in me to the point we started going to tour different art colleges. That’s when I discovered SCAD. We toured the school during spring break and I was impressed by the campus and everything they had to offer. They even had a summer program for high school juniors to spend a month on campus taking courses. I really wanted to be apart of their summer program but I knew my mom wouldn’t be able to afford it. She could see that a spark lit up in me and the motivation to go to college was more prominent. She did what any parent did she found a way even if it came out of her retirement funds. My mom always would tell me how she believed in me and my gift so much that she looked at it as an investment in my future because I was destined to do great things. That summer I went to the Rising Star program in Savannah, GA. I never been away from home more than a couple of days but a month 13 hrs away was profound. At first it was challenging adjusting but not only did I excel in the classes but I also made lasting friendships. I knew this was where I needed to be, it was a community that understood me. This was the catapult to my college career. I knew that I was smart enough and capable of going to college and if it wasn’t for my mom pushing me beyond my own comfort I would’ve let myself down. This scholarship would help me continue my college journey because my mom works so hard to provide for me but it’s been a challenge for her to afford the tuition. I have learned and grown so much my Freshman year at SCAD. My gift of art has developed greatly and I want to continue this path to share with the world my gift and be the light to someone else like my mom is to me.
