I am currently a senior at Edwardsville High School. I plan to major in chemistry and ultimately want to work in drug development and pharmaceuticals. I am a hard-working student, maintaining a 4.7 GPA and consistently earning high honor roll status. To challenge myself further, I have been enrolled in dual-credit courses at a local community college. These courses have provided me with a college-level academic experience and have prepared me for higher education. To engage with academics outside of the classroom, I participate in my area's Saturday Scholars program, where I get to listen to STEM lectures and further engage my interest in chemistry. I am also a varsity tennis player for my school. Tennis requires lots of self-discipline, and each season has challenged me to balance a heavy academic work load with daily practices and tournament trips. Besides athletics, I am actively involved in the variety of clubs my school has to offer. As a member of the Science, English, and Spanish Honors Societies, as well as the NHS, I commit much of my time to volunteering bettering my school and community. I am also a member of prom committee, allowing me to express creativity while planning one of the largest school events. As a member of the Teen Advisory Board for my city's public library, I have helped plan and set up multiple city-wide events, such as the annual summer kickoff party. Through volunteering in events like these, I feel that I am able to contribute to my community in a way that brings enjoyment to myself and others.

Julie Adams Memorial Scholarship – Women in STEM
Chemistry, often called the “central science,” connects countless fields, from biology and physics to engineering and medicine. This interconnectedness is one of the many reasons I am so drawn to it, and in many ways, I find this quality mirrored in my own life. Just as chemistry bridges different areas, my experiences in academics, athletics, and service have taught me that growth and impact come from building connections between ideas, people, and opportunities.
Growing up, I was encouraged to try new sports, hobbies, and activities until I found the ones that resonated with me. Early on, I discovered my love for tennis, which has become one of my primary passions. Similarly, my introduction to volunteering through my local library’s teen advisory board showed me how rewarding it is to support others, inspiring my commitment to service and leadership. Over time, I found ways to combine these passions—coaching young players to help them grow on and off the court and volunteering with organizations that bring tennis to people of all ages and abilities. Intertwining these two interests made them even more meaningful to me, and showed me that the foundation of impact lies in connection.
My passion for chemistry came on more gradually, but its impact was transformative. After my first chemistry lab, I couldn’t wait to put on my goggles again, no matter how deep the forehead lines were. Each lab strengthened my problem-solving skills and my appreciation for chemistry’s practical applications. By the time I enrolled in AP Chemistry, I was certain I wanted to pursue a career in drug development and pharmaceutical science, where I could channel my skills to help others in meaningful ways.
To prepare for this career, I plan to pursue a degree in chemistry or biochemistry and earn a lab technician certification before or during college in order to gain hands-on experience with laboratory techniques. Beyond academics, I look forward to joining research initiatives, study groups, and service organizations that will allow me to grow as a scientist while continuing to give back to my community.
Chemistry, like me, is endlessly multifaceted, offering countless opportunities for exploration and application. Organic chemistry requires precision and creativity, much like playing tennis. Analytical chemistry emphasizes problem-solving and attention to detail, skills I’ve developed by balancing a rigorous course load. Biochemistry, which connects chemistry to the living world, speaks directly to my aspirations to improve quality of life through science. These parallels remind me that, like chemistry, my own growth stems from weaving varied experiences into something meaningful.
The idea of studying chemistry excites me because it represents the intersection of science, innovation, and service. Whether creating life-saving treatments or improving accessibility to medications, I hope to use my skills to address real-world challenges. Just as chemistry thrives on interconnectedness, my journey has shown me that progress often comes from bridging perspectives and working collaboratively. These lessons have inspired me to combine my passion for chemistry with my desire to give back to others, creating meaningful connections that improve lives.
Nicholas Hamlin Tennis Memorial Scholarship
Growing up, I often equated success with perfection. Whether it was in sports, academics, or personal goals, I believed that anything less than first place was a failure. This mindset made me overly critical of myself, and the pressure I placed on perfection often overshadowed my achievements. Tennis became a reflection of this internal struggle, as every missed shot felt like proof that I wasn’t good enough. However, over time, the sport taught me one of the most valuable lessons of my life. I've learned that success is not about avoiding failure but about how you respond to it.
One of the most transformative moments in my tennis journey came recently, during my senior year sectionals. I had fought my way to the state-qualifying match against a girl I had previously beaten. Confidence carried me through the first set, which I narrowly won. Transitioning into the next set, my confidence didn't waver, but I knew the match was not over. The second set became an intense game of back-and-forth. Nearing the end of the second set, I was still ahead with a score of 6-5. One more game and I would accomplish my final goal of the season. As the crowd gathered under the evening sky, the intensity grew. Despite my efforts, my opponent took the second set in a tiebreaker, forcing a deciding third set.
By then, I was physically and mentally drained. My opponent however, seemed to grow stronger, and soon I was down five games. Part of me wanted to accept defeat, but something deeper wouldn’t let me give up. Point by point, I chipped away at her lead until I turned the match around. Once again, I was one game away from victory, but after one final tiebreaker, she came out on top.
The crowd erupted, my opponent’s supporters cheering, and mine clapping out of respect for the match’s length. The sting of defeat was undeniable, yet as I shook my opponent’s hand, I couldn’t help but feel proud. At that moment, I realized the match wasn’t a loss. It was a testament to my toughness and love for the sport, a perfect match to end on.
This match marked the end of my high school tennis career, but the lessons I learned will stay with me forever. Tennis has redefined my understanding of success, teaching me to embrace setbacks as opportunities to grow, celebrate effort over perfection, and value the process over the destination. These lessons have shaped my future and created the mentality I strive to possess.
Tennis has also given me the opportunity to connect with others as a mentor. As a coach, I’ve witnessed how impactful encouragement and support can be. I’ll never forget when a girl I coached came to thank me after winning a match. Seeing her excitement and newfound confidence encouraged me to keep coaching. For me, tennis is more than a game. I’ve experienced how it is a way to inspire others, foster inclusion, and create connections. Moments like that shaped my commitment to service, leadership and reinforced the importance of building supportive communities.
This sport has shaped the qualities I carry with me as I work toward my goals. In everything I do, I strive to be a more resilient, compassionate, and driven individual. I’ve come to appreciate the transformative power of this sport, and I will strive to continue emulating and celebrating those same values.
Fall Favs: A Starbucks Stan Scholarship
As the leaves start to change and the air turns cooler, my thoughts turn to one of the simplest yet most comforting rituals in my life. One thing that can always bring me a sense of calm is sharing decaf peppermint mochas with my mom in a Starbucks drive-through. This drink, with its rich chocolate and comforting warmth, is more than just a seasonal treat. It is a symbol of the bond I share with my mom and the time we spend together.
My go-to drink is typically a mango dragon fruit refresher, a vibrant fruity drink that matches the warmth and energy of spring and summer. However, when fall rolls around, I know it’s time to make the switch to the peppermint mocha. Every year, as soon as the first signs of fall appear, my mom and I make it a point to visit our local Starbucks drive-through for our favorite drink. No matter how busy I am with school work, I am almost always willing to put my work to the side when my mom asks me to visit Starbucks with her. As we slowly roll through the drive through, I take the opportunity to tell her about the ups and downs of my day. Once we make it to the window and collect our drinks, the drink can quickly remove any outside distractions, allowing me to fully cherish the time spent with my mom.
These short drives provide a sanctuary from the busyness of our everyday lives. School, errands, and various responsibilities often pull us in different directions, but the decaf peppermint mocha brings us together. The drink has become a staple of our fall and winter routines, a tradition we both eagerly anticipate. It’s not just about the drink itself, but also the moments we share as we sit peacefully in the car, sipping our mochas and chatting.
Our shared love for the decaf peppermint mocha also represents a deeper connection between us. My mom has always been my role model and my biggest supporter. The time we spend together, marked by the seasonal drink, reinforces the bond we have. In those moments, I’m reminded of the importance of our relationship and the value of open, honest communication.
The decaf peppermint mocha is not just a drink to me. It is a symbol of connection, love, and cherished moments with my mom. It is a character in my fall narrative, representing the bond we share and the moments I spend with her. As I move forward into the future, and everyday stress continues to weigh on me, I know I can always find comfort in this drink and that it will hold a special place in my heart.
