Hi, I'm Gabriell Hilburn. I'm a college junior who just applied for the nursing program at MGA. I'm 20 years old with a long road ahead of me. What stands out about me is that I'm a young mom. For a while, that was something I was ashamed of and I believed that it would hold me back. Lately I've come to the realization that my son is nothing more than motivation for me on my nursing journey. He's what keeps more going everyday. Being awarded a scholarship would help me to further pursue and obtain my degree while providing/caring for someone. Thank you for taking the time out to know a bit more about me.

My faith is the foundation of how I live, serve others, and make decisions in my daily life. It shapes my values, strengthens me through adversity, and guides my commitment to protecting life at every stage. As a mother, student, and future nurse, I actively live out my faith by choosing compassion, responsibility, and advocacy—especially in support of the pro-life mission.
I live out my faith daily through prayer, trust in God’s plan, and intentional actions that reflect love and respect for human life. My beliefs influence how I treat others, how I face challenges, and how I care for those who are vulnerable. Supporting pro-life values means recognizing the inherent dignity of every human life, from conception through natural death, and striving to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.
My faith was tested during one of the most difficult periods of my life—becoming pregnant as a young college student. Faced with fear, uncertainty, and overwhelming pressure, I turned to prayer and relied on God’s guidance. Choosing life was not easy, but it was an act of faith and trust. Through that decision, I experienced firsthand the strength, peace, and purpose that comes from surrendering to God’s will. The birth of my son, Ky’Cen, confirmed my belief that every life has meaning and value, even when circumstances feel impossible.
Faith carried me through depression, academic setbacks, and moments of self-doubt. When I felt lost and uncertain about my future, God provided the strength to persevere and the clarity to continue pursuing my education. These challenges refined my character and strengthened my resolve to serve others with empathy and humility. They also solidified my commitment to pro-life advocacy—not only in belief, but through action. My faith has profoundly influenced my future goals and career path in nursing. Healthcare places professionals at critical intersections of life, vulnerability, and ethical decision-making. I am drawn to nursing because it allows me to provide compassionate, ethical, and patient-centered care while upholding the sanctity of human life.
As a future pediatric nurse, I aim to protect and advocate for children—especially those who cannot advocate for themselves.Through my education, I plan to enact change by promoting life-affirming care, educating families, and supporting patients with dignity and respect. I hope to be a nurse who leads with integrity, offers comfort without judgment, and stands firm in ethical decision-making rooted in faith. I also plan to support families facing unplanned or difficult pregnancies by offering compassion, resources, and reassurance rather than fear or pressure.
My experiences as a young mother and student have strengthened my pro-life convictions and deepened my faith. God used adversity to shape my purpose and guide me toward a career centered on healing, advocacy, and service. Through education, faith, and dedication, I am committed to protecting life in all its stages and being a source of hope for others navigating difficult paths.
Deborah Stevens Pediatric Nursing Scholarship
My decision to pursue a career in nursing is driven by a commitment to patient-centered care, clinical excellence, and a desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. Nursing is a profession that blends science, compassion, and advocacy, and it aligns with both my personal values and long-term career goals.
My interest in healthcare began early, sparked by exposure to medical environments and reinforced by my admiration for nurses as frontline providers of care. Nurses play a critical role in patient outcomes by delivering hands-on treatment, monitoring patient progress, educating families, and advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves. The scope of nursing—its responsibility, versatility, and direct involvement in patient care—is what draws me to the profession.
My professional interest in pediatric nursing developed through years of hands-on experience caring for children. Working at a daycare throughout high school allowed me to develop strong communication skills, emotional awareness, and the ability to manage multiple needs simultaneously. These experiences taught me how to assess behavior, respond to distress, and provide comfort in high-stress situations—skills that are directly applicable to pediatric nursing practice.
Becoming a mother further solidified my desire to enter the nursing profession. Experiencing pregnancy, childbirth, and early childhood care gave me firsthand insight into the importance of attentive, knowledgeable nurses. I witnessed how pediatric and maternal nurses not only provide medical care, but also educate families, reduce anxiety, and promote safe, effective healing environments. This experience strengthened my desire to contribute to high-quality patient care and to support families during vulnerable moments.
I am choosing pediatric nursing because it requires both clinical skill and emotional intelligence. Pediatric patients often cannot clearly express their symptoms or needs, making thorough assessment, observation, and family collaboration essential. My background in childcare and motherhood has prepared me to approach pediatric patients with patience, empathy, and adaptability while maintaining a strong focus on safety and evidence-based care.
Additionally, pediatric nursing offers the opportunity to build long-term relationships with patients and families, contribute to early intervention, and support healthy development. I am particularly drawn to the role pediatric nurses play in advocacy, education, and preventative care. Being able to positively influence a child’s health trajectory is both a responsibility and a privilege.
Through formal nursing education and clinical training, I plan to develop strong assessment skills, critical thinking, and professionalism necessary to excel in pediatric nursing. I am committed to continuous learning and to upholding the ethical and clinical standards of the nursing profession. Ultimately, my goal is to provide compassionate, competent care that improves patient outcomes and supports families during their most challenging moments.
Divers Women Scholarship
My name is Gabriell Hilburn, and my journey into healthcare has been shaped by motherhood, resilience, and a deep desire to serve others. Becoming a mother at a young age changed every aspect of my life, but it also gave me a purpose greater than anything I had ever known.
From an early age, I felt drawn to helping people. As a child, watching The Good Doctor with my mom sparked my interest in healthcare and introduced me to the idea of saving lives through compassion and skill. That early inspiration stayed with me as I grew older. In high school, I began working at a daycare, where I developed patience, empathy, and a genuine love for caring for children. Being entrusted with their well-being taught me responsibility and reinforced my desire to work in a career centered on helping others.
When I entered college, I was confident in my plans and excited for the future. However, during my freshman year, I learned I was pregnant, and my world shifted overnight. I faced fear, disappointment, and uncertainty about how I would continue my education while preparing to raise a child. The emotional weight of those challenges affected my academic performance, and I ultimately had to step away from school. For the first time, I felt lost and unsure of who I was becoming.
Everything changed on October 30, 2024, when my son, Ky’Cen, was born. Holding him for the first time gave me clarity and strength. Becoming a mother reshaped my priorities and strengthened my resolve. I learned quickly how to balance responsibility, patience, and sacrifice while providing a loving and stable environment for my son. Raising a family—especially as a young mother—has required resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment. Returning to school as a mother has not been easy, but it has been deeply rewarding. Managing coursework, childcare, and personal growth has taught me discipline and time management. Watching my son grow and reach milestones motivates me daily to continue pursuing my education and build a secure future for him. I want him to see the value of perseverance and the power of determination through my actions.
My desire to enter healthcare comes from both lifelong passion and lived experience. As a mother, I have gained a deeper appreciation for caregivers who provide comfort, advocacy, and healing during vulnerable moments. I want to be that source of support for other families, especially children, by pursuing a career in nursing. Healthcare allows me to combine compassion, service, and purpose while making a tangible difference in people’s lives. Raising a family has transformed me into a stronger, more empathetic individual. It has reinforced my commitment to education and solidified my goal of working in healthcare. Through hard work, faith, and perseverance, I am determined to build a meaningful career that not only fulfills my calling but also provides a life my son can be proud of.

My name is Gabriell Hilburn, and my educational journey has been shaped by resilience, faith, and an unwavering desire to create a better life for my son and myself. From a young age, I was independent and strong-willed, always certain that I wanted to help others. As a little girl, I watched The Good Doctor with my mom, and seeing a physician save lives and bring hope in impossible moments sparked something deep within me. That was the first time I felt true passion, and it became the foundation of my dream to pursue a career in nursing.
As I grew older, that passion only deepened. In high school, I began working at a daycare, where I discovered my love for children and developed a strong sense of compassion and responsibility. Caring for children daily showed me how meaningful it is to be a source of comfort and support, especially during vulnerable moments. Eventually, I envisioned myself as a travel pediatric nurse—combining my love for children with my desire to make a difference through healthcare.
I entered Georgia Southern University confident in my plans and excited for the future. However, during the spring semester of my freshman year, my life changed completely when I found out I was pregnant. I was devastated and overwhelmed, believing I had ruined my chances at success. After sharing the news with my parents, I fell into a deep depression. I finished the semester with two failing grades, lost my HOPE Scholarship, and was forced to move back home. For the first time in my life, I felt lost, discouraged, and unsure of what my future held.
Everything changed on October 30, 2024, when I gave birth to my son, Ky’Cen. The moment I held him, I found my purpose. He became my motivation, my peace, and my reason to keep going. Becoming a mother opened my eyes to the changes I needed to make in my life and the strength I never knew I possessed. Through faith, perseverance, and growth, I began rebuilding myself and my future.
I returned to school in Spring 2024 determined to succeed—not just for myself, but for my son. Balancing motherhood and education has been challenging, but it has also been incredibly rewarding. My son, now one year old, inspires me daily as he reaches new milestones. Watching him grow fuels my determination to keep pursuing the dream I’ve had since childhood. My experience as a teen mom has transformed my educational journey by teaching me resilience, accountability, and purpose. Nursing is no longer just a childhood dream—it is a calling shaped by lived experience, compassion, and perseverance. I am currently just 0.10 away from regaining my HOPE Scholarship, and I am committed to continuing my education and achieving my goals.
A quote by Ben Carson resonates deeply with me: “Through hard work, perseverance, and a faith in God, you can live your dreams.” I live by these words and hope to instill them in my son. Earning my degree will show him that no obstacle is too great and that dreams are worth fighting for. Thank you for considering my application.
