My name is Gabe Scribner. I'm a senior at Vergennes Union High School in Vergennes, Vermont. I plan to major in accounting in the fall of 2025 at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York while also playing for their Varsity Baseball team. I enjoy being outdoors and spending time with friends. I'm also an Eagle Scout in Troop 539 based out of Vergennes. I've gone on many excursions with Boy Scouts and won't forget the memories made during my time in scouts growing my skills in many different aspects. Scouts has helped me have something to always turn to and push through some of the most challenging times I've had in my life.

First-Gen Flourishing Scholarship
This scholarship will help me to pursue my dreams of majoring in accounting, while also achieving my lifelong dream of playing college baseball. After earning my Eagle Scout award in October, I felt I had matured as a person enough that I believed I could turn to others to mentor and lead them in the steps that I was following prior. This was shown to me as I was chosen by my community to be a coach for the Soccer and Baseball youth clinics that our community puts on for the youth athletes. Being a mentor for them was one of my most memorable parts of high school. I believe that it truly was a lifechanging experience for me to see the smiles on the kids' faces, and to see them share the same love and joy for sports that I do. I also believe that it pushed me to be a better person and to look at myself and be a mentor for the kids coming through the Boy Scout troop as well.
Having a younger brother going through the same things I was at his age; it was easy to connect with him and his friends. Being an older scout and helping them through their journeys of scouting was beneficial to me to be a better leader and see the good I can do by being a role model to others.
One instance I remember was one day we had a baseball game, and I had just come out pitching. We put in a younger player, a freshman at the time, for him to get some experience on the mound and get comfortable pitching in games. While he was warming up some fans from the other team, mainly high school students, started heckling him and shouting disrespectful things to him. Being only a freshman, and me being in his shoes at one point, I knew this was not a good thing to hear when you're trying your best. I immediately went to the umpires and the other coaches and made them tell the kids to stop. It hurt me knowing that someone that I care for was getting treated this way, and I knew I needed to do something about it.
After this experience, the kid who this had happened to, invited me to go fishing with him. He told me how much he appreciated what I had done and that it really left an impact on him and showed the type of person and leader I am. Me and him got closer after this, and to this point he is still one of my best friends and we still go fishing together. With this season being my last high school baseball season, I hope to leave marks like this on more people and continue to be a better leader.
