Bio

https://bhenley20.wixsite.com/eportfolio After several years of navigating the corporate world, I experienced a transformative educational opportunity. Blessed with a company that generously covered 100% of tuition and books, I embarked on the journey to attain my bachelor's degree in business while steadfastly maintaining full-time employment. Amidst these four years, life unfolded in beautiful ways—I met my now-husband, became a mother, and proudly graduated with a bachelor's in business management in 2004. This marked a significant chapter in my life, filled with pride and gratitude. However, my educational odyssey and fervor for learning continued. In 2011, I returned to the healthcare realm, assuming diverse roles, and refusing to relinquish my dream of becoming a nurse. I diligently completed all necessary science prerequisites and, at last, received acceptance into the Bachelor of Science Program at Azusa Pacific College, thus transforming my longstanding aspiration into a tangible reality. This pursuit of a BSN marks my second bachelor's degree, and unfortunately, it doesn't come with additional federal funding. The resulting financial strain has presented challenges, leading to a period of hardship that compelled me to take a temporary leave of absence, pending the availability of funds to cover the remaining tuition balance and subsequent semesters. Yet, despite these obstacles, my passion for nursing remains unwavering, fueled by a profound dedication to making a meaningful impact in healthcare.

Nurturing Hope: The Transformative Power of Nursing in Overcoming Substance Abuse Substance abuse carries a negative persona, a heavy burden that individuals often carry in silence, shrouded by shame and fear of judgment. In my vision as a nurse, I see myself as a beacon of empathy, creating a safe space for those grappling with addiction to share their stories without the fear of condemnation. By fostering an environment of understanding and compassion, I hope to dismantle the societal barriers that hinder individuals from seeking the help they desperately need. One of the profound ways nursing can make a difference is by recognizing the hidden cries for assistance that individuals struggling with substance abuse often emit. These cries may be subtle, masked by a smile or buried beneath layers of denial. Through attentive and empathetic care, nurses can unveil these hidden struggles, offering support that transcends the conventional boundaries of healthcare. By approaching each patient with an open heart, nurses can create a connection that encourages honesty, paving the way for the necessary steps towards recovery. Substance abuse does not exist in isolation; its tendrils reach into the very fabric of personal relationships. As a future nurse, I envision playing a crucial role in healing not only the individual but also the fractured bonds that substance abuse may have strained. By embracing a holistic approach to patient care, I aspire to involve families and loved ones in the healing process, providing education, support, and counseling to rebuild trust and understanding. Furthermore, I am acutely aware of the significant influence that substance abuse can exert on an individual's professional ambitions. On a personal note, I have navigated a toxic upbringing marked by job instability, anger, isolation, and denial, an experience that profoundly shapes my career aspirations. When grappling with substance abuse, the pursuit of a purposeful and gratifying career frequently becomes a secondary priority in the face of addiction's challenges. In the realm of nursing, my objective is to motivate individuals to reclaim their dreams and aspirations, steering them towards a journey of recovery that goes beyond physical well-being, encompassing the rejuvenation of personal and professional objectives. In conclusion, my pursuit of a career in nursing is deeply rooted in the belief that compassionate care can serve as a catalyst for change in the lives of those struggling with substance abuse. By dismantling the negative persona surrounding addiction, fostering open communication, and addressing the impact on relationships and career aspirations, nursing emerges as a powerful force in the journey towards recovery. I am committed to embodying the values of empathy, understanding, and support, aspiring to be a beacon of hope for those navigating the often challenging path to overcoming substance abuse. A Heartfelt Journey: Returning to College at 49 as a Nursing Student My educational journey has been a labor of love, a trajectory that has traversed the worlds of business and psychology, ultimately converging on the path to becoming a nursing student at the age of 49. Nursing has always been more than a profession to me; it has been a passion and a dream that has endured throughout my diverse experiences and career pursuits. Initially drawn to the corporate world, I envisioned a career in business management. The allure of business management and navigating the intricacies of corporate dynamics seemed like a promising path. However, my heart yearned for something more profound—an opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals. This compelling desire pulled me back into the realm of healthcare, a space I had always longed to be a part of. I discovered the profound impact I could make on the world by being the kind of nurse who serves as a second mother, aunt, grandma, or sister to those lacking the luxury and support of their own family during times of illness. While I found fulfillment in delving into the intricacies of the human mind, my innermost being yearned for a more hands-on, meaningful approach to connecting with others and offering genuine care. My pivotal moment unfolded while I served as a new medical secretary at a local community health clinic, where a teenage girl in crisis was brought in by her mother. The girl was grappling with suicidal thoughts, and her mother, desperate for help, was unsure where to turn. During this challenging situation, surrounded by empathetic healthcare professionals, I experienced firsthand the profound influence nurses wielded in positively shaping the lives of their patients. This emotional encounter not only solidified my long-standing dream of becoming a nurse but also fueled a newfound determination. It marked the turning point when my passion for nursing transcended being a mere aspiration and transformed into a resolute commitment. This powerful experience ultimately led me to make the life-changing decision to leave the corporate world behind and embark on a fulfilling journey toward nursing. Returning to school at the age of 49 was a deliberate choice, and the decision to embark on this journey was rooted in the realization that nursing was not just a career change but a fulfillment of a dream I had cherished for as long as I can remember. The transition from the boardrooms of the corporate world to the dynamic and compassionate world of nursing has been a conscious, purposeful step towards realizing a dream that has always burned brightly within me.

A Journey of Compassion: Overcoming Financial Barriers to Pursue a Nursing Career As an adult student on the brink of a career change, my journey toward becoming a nurse has been a testament to resilience, passion, and the transformative power of education. The path to realizing my dream has been fraught with challenges, primarily financial, and it is with profound gratitude that I acknowledge the crucial role that scholarships play in supporting individuals like me in achieving our aspirations. Growing up, my life took me down unexpected avenues, growing up in a poor town like Flint, MI where the absence of the automotive industry left many starving and journeying down a path of survival and dreams were not a part of life. Leaving that environment and becoming a young mother life led me away from my initial dream of becoming a nurse. However, the call to serve others through healthcare never waned. It was not until my mid-forties, after years of working in the medical field, that I decided to pursue my long-held passion for nursing. The decision was not made lightly, as it meant a complete upheaval of my life, both personally and professionally. Embarking on this journey, one of the most formidable challenges I faced was the financial burden associated with nursing education. As an adult student with existing financial responsibilities, the prospect of shouldering the costs of tuition, textbooks, and clinical fees felt like an insurmountable barrier. Balancing the demands of coursework with a part-time job to make ends meet became a daily struggle, often leaving me physically and emotionally drained. Despite my unwavering determination to succeed in my nursing education, the financial strain became a constant source of stress. There were times when I questioned whether I could continue pursuing my dream, grappling with the harsh reality that my limited resources might force me to abandon the path I had so bravely chosen. It was during one such moment of despair that I discovered the transformative impact of scholarships. Receiving a scholarship not only alleviated the financial burden but also served as a beacon of hope, reaffirming that my dreams were valid and achievable. The support I received enabled me to focus on my studies wholeheartedly, without the constant worry of making ends meet. It allowed me to immerse myself in the practical aspects of nursing, such as clinical rotations and hands-on experience, which are indispensable to mastering the art and science of healthcare. Beyond the tangible benefits, the scholarship I received bestowed upon me a sense of belonging and recognition within the nursing community. It was as if a collective of compassionate individuals saw the potential in my journey and offered a helping hand. This not only fueled my academic pursuits but also strengthened my resolve to pay forward the kindness I had received. The scholarship became a catalyst for a ripple effect of compassion, inspiring me to commit myself to future endeavors aimed at supporting aspiring nurses facing similar financial challenges. In conclusion, my journey from an adult changing careers to a budding nurse highlights the transformative impact of scholarships. Financial support not only lightens the burden of educational expenses but empowers me to dedicate myself entirely to honing nursing skills. I'm grateful for the generosity of those who understand the significance of aiding individuals like me in pursuing a nursing career. As I approach the realization of my dream, I'm committed to embodying the compassion that guided me, ensuring others also find solace and support in their journey toward becoming empathetic caregivers.

As an adult student giving up a career to follow a longtime passion and new career path "They'll tell ME I'm insane, But I've got a blank space, baby, and I'll write MY name". Nursing is a commitment that requires empathy, compassion, and education to serve our community's people. Nursing is the career path that will allow me to promote the health and well-being of all individuals, and I will serve and dedicate my career to promoting health without discrimination. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28. Nursing is a combination of faith, education, willingness to treat others just as a god, and Christianity believed. My goal is to pursue my education to transition from a hospital healthcare worker to a licensed Registered Nurse. and then it will allow me to become a nurse so I care for and educate individuals, families, and the communities that I will serve. I believe that nurses are transforming health care and improving health! Through the pandemic, nurses continued to show their strength and commitment to patients using values followed by AACN: "Leadership, innovation, diversity and inclusion, and integrity.” With the sacrifice of their family and loved ones to care for those who were unable to care for themselves and become the family in need when the actual family couldn't be by the patient's side. My nursing goals are consistent with the evangelical commitment of my school; Azusa Pacific University: “reconciliation and relief of human hurt”. I have the desire and passion to be the nurse that you would hope and desire to care for your family. The commitment to nursing requires patience, skill, and determination to achieve the ultimate goal of maintaining and restoring the health and well-being of an individual. I’ve been in the healthcare industry for 20 years, and as a mother, nana, and wife I'm continuing to pursue my education yet again. This second career path is my passion, and I look forward to the day I'm a licensed RN and can be the light for others to get through uncertain health conditions. Now as an adult student again (49-year-old female), I am back at school again working toward another bachelor's degree this time in Nursing and financial concerns would be the only thing holding me back from fulfilling my dream. The generous financial support from the Taylor Swift 1989 Scholarship will allow me to fill my Blank Space and change the lives of others through compassion. Barbara Henley Future RN/BSN

    Paige's Promise Scholarship
My passion is to become a Registered Nurse in the state of California, and I accept the responsibility of having a “teaching” and "educational" role for patients. The main difference between a RN and an BSN/RN is that you are a leader, educator and work with those patients to teach them the value of their health and the benefits of taking care of themselves. Substance Use Disorder affects many in the world today and my impact on those I treat will promote the best health and wellness education possible for those who suffer. My role is educating those individuals that I see and take care of on any basis. Nursing is a commitment that requires empathy, compassion, and education to serve our community's people. My nursing goal is to promote the health and well-being of all individuals I will serve without discrimination. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28. Nursing is a combination of faith, education, and a willingness to treat others just as God and Christianity believed. Individuals that suffer from Substance Use Disorders struggle the most with lack of compassion and empathy from those around them that do not understand the disease. It is my future role to educate those patients, families and those supporting their loved ones who struggle with Substance Use to help them learn to focus on what they can control, their health with the love and support from myself (as a future nurse), and those who care for them. I will come across those individuals in my daily career and take that opportunity to educate through resources, community support, government support etc to help them overcome or maintain their challenges without further detriment to themselves and their lives. My goal is to pursue my education to care for and educate individuals, families, and the communities I serve. In my power and ability as a nursing student and nurse, I will commit myself to provide the best possible education and prevention while interacting with people who are receiving treatment for alcohol-related conditions. Including those who have repeated alcohol-related diagnoses, and anyone who is seen in an emergency following an incident. My profession will provide me the capacity to strive to have an impact on those who may be seen because of alcohol-related diseases. Offer them knowledge, hope, and awareness of how something viewed as "innocent" can become costly in every aspect of life.

I am an adult currently transitioning careers into Nursing. Some think I'm crazy going back to school and set to graduate when I'm turning 50. It's my passion, and sometimes frustrating that finances may be the only thing standing in my path to completion. I volunteer for Kathleen Faley Special Olympics and assist special needs adults/children acheive their own award for sports and participating with assistance. I'm attending Azusa Pacific University which is a faith-based institution to attain my BSN and currently set to graduate in 2024. I have already achieved a Bachelor of Business years ago and am unable to attain student loan funding. I am funding my current education journey and any assistance means more to me than you know, and VERY MUCH APPRECIATED! Nursing is a commitment that requires empathy, compassion, and education to serve our community's people. Nursing is a difficult area to pursue, and with it comes many challenges, and yet I still dream to achieve my Bachelor's in Nursing. My goal is to pursue my education to care for and educate individuals, families, and the communities I serve. I chose to apply to Azusa Pacific University because it has an impressive history regarding its nursing program. The recipient of the 1996 and 2003 accreditation from the National League of Nursing shows the history and experience offered by Azusa Pacific University. My decision to apply to Azusa’s school of nursing is to combine my passion for caring for people, also combined with my faith to achieve my purpose of being a loving, kind-hearted, and responsible nurse to all those I serve. My nursing goals are consistent with the evangelical commitment of Azusa Pacific to “reconciliation and relief of human hurt”. I have the desire and passion to be the nurse that you would hope and desire to care for your family. The commitment to nursing requires patience, skill, and determination to achieve the ultimate goal of maintaining and restoring the health and well-being of an individual. I believe that the combination of education and Christianity will elevate my skills as a healthcare professional, and I am honored to be in a program to help me achieve those goals. This scholarship opportunity would afford me the ability to continue my education as an adult and care for those in need after achieving my Bachelor of Science in Nursing est. 2024. Thank you for the opportunity, and support. Sincerely, Future Nurse Barbara Henley

I am an adult currently transitioning careers into Nursing. Some think I'm crazy going back to school and set to graduate when I'm turning 50. Its my passion, and sometimes frustrating that finances may be the only thing standing in my path to completion. I'm attending Azusa Pacific University which is a faith based institution to attain my BSN and currently set to graduate in 2024. I have already acheived a Bachelor of Business years ago and am unable to attain student loan funding. I am funding my current education journey and any assistance means more to me than you know, and VERY MUCH APPRECIATED! Nursing is a commitment that requires empathy, compassion, and education to serve our community's people. Nursing is a dificult area to pursure, and with it comes many challenges and yet I still dream to acheive my Bachelors in Nursing.
