Bio

Hi, my name is Francisco. I’m a student at Penn State Schuylkill and I am majoring in Cybersecurity and a minor in Security Risk Analysis. I’m also considering a second minor. I love creating things and ever since I was 11 years old, I started to create Lego stop-motion videos, which led me to get deep into editing, and because of that experience I am proficient in multiple programs for video editing/production. I am currently the media producer for a business-oriented podcast (Shark Bite Biz). I am responsible for producing each episode in an interview style format and creating new assets in any media form. I enrolled at Harcum College to major in Graphic Design. I came to the realization that this field is too saturated and very competitive. I would be underpaid and live miserably trying to pay off my student debt. I committed a $30,000 mistake in private student loans by attending Harcum for only two semesters and didn’t gain much from it. But on the bright side I learned a lot from this experience and started to have a clearer path of what I wanted to do. I had most of my gen eds done and I took my dad’s advice and transferred to Penn State. When I came to orientation, the campus looked great. It was a night and day difference between Harcum and Penn State. The resources available and the quality of it at Penn State is superb compared to Harcum where most of it is lacking and you don’t get the help you need to make the right career choice. I am happy now and I feel more stable. Things are clearing up now and I know what I want to do in life. I no longer feel lost.

What does a $30,000 mistake lead too? I was a student at Harcum college for two semesters. That was a $30,000 mistake. This was a great learning experience but a costly one. This is what led me to the path I am in right now. I originally indented to pursue a career as a Media Producer, I wanted to be a jack of all trades when it comes to working with media. I realized that this field is too saturated and my goals were unrealistic. I took my dad's advice and transferred to Penn State. At this point in my life I didn't know what I wanted to do a few months ago. I know I am very passionate about video production, but I also love technology and have a great understanding of it. I looked into the IT field and it was grabbed my attention. Eventually I gained interest and decided to pursue a Bachelor's in IST, however this will change soon. Once I transferred to Penn State and started classes, I spoke to my professor for two of my IST classes and who may also be my future advisor. He told me that the IST degree will be phased out soon and replaced with IT. With this information I looked into Application Development and Cybersecurity since these were the most attractive to me. I picked Cybersecurity and created a list of career paths that interest me. I am also taking an SRA (Security Risk Analysis) minor and may a second another minor. The reason for picking Cybersecurity as a major and SRA as a minor was because I looked into potential career paths and these gained my attention. I also looked into the list of duties for some of these career paths to have an idea of what to expect when I seek a job in this field. Once I had this figured out. I realized, I no longer feel lost in life and I felt more stable. I am seeking stability in my life and I won't lose the chance to gain it and live happily. As of writing and submitting this essay, I spoke to one of the track coaches at Penn State. It seems I will have the possibility of doing sports at Penn State as they are seeking someone with heart and discipline. I was told that I have "...heart, grit, and determination..." (Coach Wilde, PSU Schuylkill's Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach). They way this interaction came to be was because a coach saw me running in the track field with weights. I was about to do my fourth and final lap, but he stopped me and wanted to speak to me. He told me to get rid of my weights and run the final lap without them and meet him in the gym. I felt light as a feather once I started to run without the weights. After I finished, I went into the gym and he got my contact info and told the other coaches about me. This is how I met the other coaches. I still have to work two jobs and pay for housing as it's not all fully covered by my Federal Student Aid. $1000 would drastically help me a lot in paying off housing. This will allow me to save money for the next semester at Penn State and pay off my private student loan for Harcum. I am not in the best financial situation, but I am doing my best to rectify this and limit my spending.
