Growing up, I learned that financial stability was something my family could not always rely on. There were times when we experienced housing instability and homelessness, and I watched the adults in my life work hard to provide the things we needed. Living through that uncertainty taught me to appreciate stability and motivated me to work toward creating it for myself and my family. While many students see college as the next step after high school, I see education as a turning point in my life and an opportunity to build a future that once felt out of reach. For a long time, I felt responsible for struggles that were beyond my control. I believed that needing support or pursuing my goals could make me a burden. As I grew older, I realized that education was not something I should feel guilty for pursuing. It was an opportunity to create a better future for myself and the people I care about. That realization changed the way I viewed college and gave me a stronger sense of purpose. The obstacles I encountered taught me how to keep moving forward even when life was difficult. Although there were moments when things outside of school were stressful, I stayed focused on my education because I knew it was one of the strongest paths toward a better future. I pushed myself academically and earned a 4.0 GPA because I refused to let my circumstances determine what I could achieve. Every assignment, test, and challenge reminded me that I was capable of reaching my goals. As a first-generation college student, I know I am entering an unfamiliar environment. I have had to learn about college applications, financial aid, and scholarships largely through my own effort. Although the process has been challenging, it has helped me become more independent and confident. Earning a college degree will give me the knowledge and opportunities to build a more secure future for myself and support my family. My experiences have shaped the career I hope to pursue. I plan to study biomedical sciences with the goal of pursuing a career in surgery. I have always been interested in science because it allows us to understand the human body and find solutions to problems that affect people’s lives. I hope to contribute to medical research, improve treatments for serious illnesses, and help people who may face challenges accessing the care they need. I want to be part of a healthcare system where people feel seen, supported, and valued during difficult moments. Receiving the Douglass M. Hamilton Memorial Scholarship would help reduce the financial burden of pursuing higher education and allow me to focus more fully on my studies. As I pursue biomedical sciences, I know my education will require dedication through challenging science courses and healthcare experiences. This scholarship would allow me to spend more time preparing for my future career instead of being limited by financial concerns. It would also allow me to take advantage of opportunities beyond the classroom, including research, mentorship, and experiences that will prepare me to serve others through medicine. More than financial support, it would represent someone believing in my potential and investing in my future. My journey has not been easy, but it has shaped the person I am becoming. I have learned that my circumstances do not define my worth and that education can be the only thing I need to create change. I am determined to continue my education, serve others through medicine, and use my experiences to build a better future for myself, my family, and my community.
