What Made Me
Every story has a turning point. Mine was not a single moment but a person: my mother.
My parents left Port Harcourt, Nigeria, to build a better future in the United States. They left behind family, familiarity, and the support systems they had always known. Growing up, I heard stories about the challenges my mother faced after arriving in America. English was not her strongest language, and she was often hesitant to speak because she feared making mistakes. She faced obstacles that could have easily convinced her to give up. Instead, she chose to persevere.
I watched her work tirelessly to create opportunities for our family. Despite setbacks, she continued pursuing her education and eventually became a registered nurse. Today, she is furthering her education by pursuing a master’s degree to become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. Seeing her determination transformed the way I viewed challenges. She taught me that success is not defined by the absence of obstacles but by the willingness to keep moving forward despite them.
As the daughter of Nigerian immigrants; my father Igbo, my mother Ikwerre, both rooted in Rivers State; I have always carried a deep appreciation for education. My parents viewed it as a pathway to opportunity, service, and empowerment. Their sacrifices instilled in me a responsibility to make the most of every opportunity I receive. That responsibility became the foundation of my commitment to nursing.
My journey toward a career in healthcare is rooted in both personal inspiration and a desire to serve others. Nursing represents the perfect combination of science, compassion, and advocacy. I am currently pursuing my nursing education with the goal of becoming a healthcare professional who not only provides quality care but also uplifts patients during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. My mother’s path toward psychiatric mental health nursing has also drawn my attention to mental health; a space that carries deep stigma in many African communities, and one where culturally competent care is urgently needed.
Beyond academics, I believe that community service is essential. Alongside my mother and our church family at CAC Faith Church, I help prepare and distribute meals to unhoused members of our community. Those Sunday's taught me something no textbook could: healthcare is not only clinical but it is relational. The people we served needed more than food. They needed dignity, presence, and someone willing to truly see them. These experiences deepened my belief that meaningful care extends beyond clinics and hospitals. It requires understanding people, listening to their stories, and addressing the barriers that affect their well-being.
The future I am building is one centered on service, leadership, and impact. I hope to use my education to improve access to quality healthcare and to serve communities that are often underserved. I also want to be an example for younger students from immigrant families who may question whether they belong in higher education or healthcare professions. My mother’s journey showed me what is possible when determination meets opportunity.
My turning point was witnessing resilience firsthand. Her story became the foundation of my own and it moves me forward every single day.
Hardships are not obstacles, but rather opportunities for growth - Unknown
Sgt. Albert Dono Ware Memorial Scholarship
In my life, I first discovered the virtues of bravery, sacrifice, and service through everyday acts of perseverance. The memory of Sgt. Albert Dono Ware serves as a reminder that bravery isn't necessarily found in dramatic situations. It can occasionally be found in making the decision to keep going, seizing opportunities when they are few, and helping others despite facing personal difficulties. These principles have influenced my path and still have an impact on how I intend to help address the issues that the African diaspora in the US faces.
Being the daughter of immigrants from Nigeria, I was raised on tales that completely changed the way I thought about sacrifice. In order to pursue a future in the United States, my parents left behind stability, familiarity, and family in West Africa. With origins in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, my mother is Ikwerre and my father is Igbo. They didn't just decide to move. It was an act of trust in education, opportunity, and the conviction that by giving their kids access to resources they didn't always have, they could accomplish more.
In particular, my mother's experience has influenced how I view bravery and service. She struggled with confidence when speaking English and had language challenges upon arriving in the United States. Despite her frequent feelings of shyness and uncertainty, she was determined not to let them dictate her destiny. She obtained her nursing certifications, became a registered nurse, and is currently working for a master's degree to become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner after years of perseverance. I learned that service is not passive from watching her pursue her studies while raising four kids. It calls for perseverance, self-control, and a readiness to put others' needs first even in the face of adversity.
Her example motivated me to pursue a career in nursing and healthcare. I selected this line of work because I believe it is one of the most direct methods to confront systematic injustices and benefit communities. Members of the African diaspora in the US frequently encounter obstacles that go beyond medical care, as my education and experiences have made me more conscious of. These issues include unequal access to healthcare, cultural stigma related to mental health, underrepresentation in healthcare professions, educational gaps, and financial constraints that have an impact on long-term wellness.
The principles embodied in Sgt. Ware's legacy push me to consider collective impact rather than just individual achievement. Serving others entails establishing areas where communities are supported and feel seen. Acknowledging that significant change frequently involves time, effort, and campaigning is a sign of sacrifice. Being brave entails having tough talks about injustice and rejecting institutions that negatively impact communities.
Increasing access to culturally sensitive healthcare and mental health services in African diaspora populations is one of the most important improvements, in my opinion. Financial obstacles, institutional mistrust, or cultural norms that prohibit talking about mental health issues are some of the reasons why many people put off getting treatment. Trust and results can be strengthened by increasing funding for community health programs, hiring and assisting diverse healthcare workers, and integrating health education.
Reforming education is equally crucial. To assist students from African diaspora backgrounds in pursuing careers in nursing, medicine, public health, and leadership, scholarships, mentorship programs, and academic pipeline activities needs to be increased. Representation matters because seeing professionals who understand cultural experiences can make opportunities feel attainable.
Several stakeholders must work together to drive this shift. Institutions of higher learning need to make investments in mentorship as well as equal access. Diversity in the workforce and culturally competent care must be given top priority in healthcare systems. Faith-based institutions and community organizations should continue to be reliable sources of information. Legislation that improves community development, educational access, and healthcare affordability must be supported by legislators. Lastly, the African diaspora's members need to stay involved through local leadership, mentoring, and advocacy.
The legacy of Sgt. Albert Dono Ware serves as a reminder that bravery is determined by both what we choose to build for others and what we endure. Long before I completely grasped that concept, my parents demonstrated it. Their sacrifices gave me opportunity, and I want to pay tribute to them by pursuing a career in advocacy and service. In addition to providing care for patients, my goal as a nursing student is to support the development of communities and institutions so that future African diaspora generations can flourish with respect, opportunity, and access.
Tawkify Meaningful Connections Scholarship
There is a type of person who enters your life quietly and consistently; my grandmother embodied this. From the time I could sit at the kitchen table and engage in conversation, she was there. Her presence was not intrusive or directive; it simply existed. I have come to realize that this presence served as a form of teaching.
My grandmother raised seven children in a modest home with thin walls and a substantial garden. She did not engage in grand gestures or articulate speeches. Instead, she had an exceptional ability to make you feel that whatever you were expressing, no matter how small or unclear, deserved her full attention. She would pause her activities, look directly at you, and listen in a manner that created a sense of stillness. As a child, I did not have words for her approach; I only knew that after speaking with her, I felt more like myself.
This relationship has shaped me in ways that I continue to uncover. The most important lesson she exemplified, never explicitly stated, only demonstrated, was that people need to feel acknowledged. Not advised or fixed, but simply seen. Numerous times, I approached her with burdens, a troubled friendship, a personal failure, an unspoken fear, and she never hurried to provide solutions. Instead, she asked questions, reflected back my thoughts, and sat with me in discomfort rather than trying to alleviate it swiftly. This patience was an expression of deep respect, conveying that I was capable of navigating my own path and that she trusted me to do so.
As I have aged and experienced different phases of life, I have noticed how profoundly that dynamic has influenced how I form connections with others. I am naturally inclined to seek depth rather than breadth in relationships. I prefer to know one person deeply rather than accumulate numerous superficial acquaintances. This inclination, I believe, is rooted in her influence, a gradual absorption of the idea that genuine connection necessitates time, attention, and a readiness to be present without an agenda.
She also demonstrated that relationships are not transactional. In a culture that often views connection through the lens of what we can gain, she provided a contrasting perspective: that consistently being there for others, without keeping score, is the essence of connection. She helped her neighbors and remembered her grandchildren’s challenges not out of expectation, but because she deeply understood our mutual responsibilities. This understanding has become a guiding principle for me. When uncertain about my actions in a relationship, I ask myself how she would respond. The answer is usually some version of this: slow down, pay attention, and offer generous presence.
Admittedly, I have not always upheld this standard. I have been distracted when I should have listened, offered advice when silence was needed, and allowed busyness to create distance. However, the relationship provided a reference point, a model of genuine connection characterized by care.
She passed away several years ago, and grief has a unique way of bringing clarity. What I miss most is not a specific conversation, but the experience of being known by her, the safety and ease of it. This experience has inspired me to offer something similar to those I care about: not perfection or wisdom, but the steady, unhurried gift of my complete attention.
She taught me that the most meaningful gift one can give another is the sense that they matter. I am still learning how to achieve this effectively. However, because of her, I have a clear understanding of what it looks like when someone gets it right.

To me, service entails continually showing up for others with compassion, humility, and a desire to make a difference in both large and small ways. I believe that service is defined not by recognition or labels, but by actions that brighten someone's day, restore dignity, and strengthen a community. One of the most meaningful ways I live a life of service is by volunteering to feed homeless people alongside my mother and our church community, CAC Faith Church.
Growing up, my family exercised service rather than just discussing it. Through outreach work with my mother and church, I've helped prepare and distribute meals, provided supplies, and spent time with those in our community who are struggling. These experiences taught me that service goes beyond just serving food. A meal may temporarily relieve hunger, but kindness, conversation, and treating others with respect can serve as reminders that they are recognized and loved.
One incident that stuck with me was discovering how many people we served just wanted someone to acknowledge them and speak to them respectfully. Seeing people express gratitude for what many would consider a minor gesture shifted my perspective. I discovered that service does not always require an abundance of finances; it can also involve donating time, compassion, and personal connection. These experiences pushed me to become more conscious of the needs around me and encouraged me to consider how I may have a bigger effect in the future.
My devotion to service has also influenced my educational and professional ambitions. I am seeking higher education because I want to gain the information and skills required to assist others in a meaningful and long-term way. My ambition is to work in healthcare, specifically nursing, where I can combine science, compassion, and activism to better people's lives. Healthcare providers frequently encounter people in some of their most vulnerable moments, and I want to be someone who delivers not only exceptional treatment but also comfort, empathy, and respect.
Through my study, I wish to serve communities that may encounter hurdles to receiving healthcare and to assist those who frequently feel forgotten. I want to contribute my efforts to improve health outcomes by educating people and empowering them to manage their own treatment. I also intend to continue participating in community outreach and volunteer work since I feel service should be a lifelong commitment rather than something that ends with a degree.
My mother has been one of my most inspiring models of service. Watching her devote herself to helping others while furthering her own studies has taught me that lasting change begins with consistent acts of kindness. She taught me that success is defined not only by personal accomplishments, but also by the number of lives we positively influence.
To live a life of service is choosing compassion, giving without expecting recognition, and utilizing chances and education to help others. Through healthcare and continuous community involvement, I aspire to embody those principles and make a long-term difference in the lives of those I serve.
Pierson Family Scholarship for U.S. Studies
My upbringing has been influenced by family, community, and the conviction that education provides chances not only for individuals but also for entire generations. My parents came from Nigeria to the United States in search of a brighter future for their children. My mother is from Rivers State, and my father is Igbo, and while much of my extended family still lives in West Africa, my parents have constructed a life based on tenacity, education, and service. Growing up in a household that emphasized hard work and resilience shaped my personal aspirations and pushed me to pursue higher education in the United States.
Watching my mother's journey has been one of my most powerful sources of encouragement. When she relocated to the United States, she struggled to adjust to her new surroundings and gain confidence in her English communication skills. Despite these challenges, she stayed resolute. She fulfilled her goal of becoming a registered nurse through years of perseverance and sacrifice, and she is now pursuing further study to acquire her master's degree as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Watching her continue to improve intellectually while supporting our family taught me that education is more than just getting a degree; it is also about generating opportunities and helping others.
One hurdle I've overcome is learning to believe in my own abilities to succeed while juggling expectations, academics, and uncertainty about my future path. Coming from an immigrant family, there is often pressure to excel and make the sacrifices of previous generations meaningful. At times, I questioned my ability to achieve the goals I set for myself. However, I discovered that growth comes from constancy, not perfection. I learned discipline, gained confidence in my talents, and saw setbacks as opportunities to progress rather than reasons to give up.
My mother is the person who inspires me the most because she symbolizes resilience, compassion, and determination. She has taught me that perseverance is the key to success and that setbacks do not define outcomes. Her commitment to healthcare and helping others has fueled my ambition to pursue a career where I can have a significant influence.
My post-graduate goals are to further my studies and pursue a profession in healthcare, particularly nursing. I want to be a nurse who not only offers high-quality care but also advocates for patients and works to improve health outcomes in underserved communities. Long-term, I aspire to further my education and advance into leadership positions where I can combine clinical expertise with service.
This scholarship would help support that journey and allow me to continue turning the opportunities my family worked hard to create into meaningful impact for others.
Mighty Memorial Scholarship
Throughout my upbringing, my mother was a constant source of inspiration for me. She is a member of my community who has demonstrated through her actions that perseverance, hard work, and compassion can transform challenges into possibilities. Her experience has molded not only who I am now, but also who I want to be in the future.
My mother was born and raised in Nigeria, then moved to the United States in quest of better chances not only for herself but also her children. The transition to a new country was very difficult. Initially, English was not her strongest language, and she was often shy and scared while communicating with others for fear of making a mistake. She had times of doubt, disappointments, and challenges that would have disheartened anyone. However, she refused to let such problems determine her future.
She put forth endless effort to create a better life. Even when success did not come easily, she learned, adjusted, and kept going forward through perseverance and determination. Her dream of becoming a registered nurse was eventually accomplished. Seeing that she is still continuing her schooling and is now pursuing a master's degree to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner makes her story even more inspirational.
Watching her journey has changed my perspective on challenges. I've learnt that a person's determination to persevere in the face of adversity determines their success. My mother instilled in me the value of pushing oneself beyond one's comfort zone and staying dedicated to one's objectives even when things seem to be moving slowly.
Her character is what most inspires me, even more than her achievements in school and professional life. She has always struck a balance between taking care of our family and helping others. She treats people with compassion and understanding, and she serves as a reminder that real success is determined not only by our accomplishments but also by the positive influence we have on the lives of others.
Her example has influenced my educational and professional ambitions. As I pursue my study and eventual profession in healthcare, I carry with me the lessons my mother taught me every day: perseverance, discipline, courage, and compassion. Her experience reminds me that hardships are not obstacles, but rather opportunities for growth.
My mother’s extraordinary journey has inspired me to dream bigger, work harder, and believe that with dedication, meaningful goals can become reality.

Growing up in a black family that values perseverance, education, and service, I learned early that success is built through dedication and purpose. My identity has shaped how I see the world and strengthened my determination to succeed in spaces where black students are often underrepresented. Watching my mother overcome obstacles to become an RN while continuing her education inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. For this reason, I chose to further my education in STEAM, specifically within healthcare and nursing, because it combines science, innovation, compassion, and lifelong learning to improve the lives of others.
What draws me most to STEAM is its ability to solve real-world problems and create opportunities for positive change. Healthcare is constantly evolving through advances in technology, research, and patient care, and I want to be part of that progress. Nursing is more than a profession to me; it is a calling that allows me to combine scientific knowledge with empathy and human connection. Through education in science and healthcare, I will gain the skills needed to advocate for patients, improve outcomes, and contribute to a stronger healthcare system.
My passion for this field comes not only from academic interest, but also from personal experience. My parents immigrated from Nigeria to the US to create better opportunities for our family. My mother faced language barriers and challenges adapting to a new country, yet never gave up on her dream of becoming a nurse. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree as a PHMNP, continuing to push herself even further despite past struggles. Her determination showed me the importance of resilience, education, and self-belief. Seeing her care for others with compassion inspired me to follow a similar path and dedicate my future to helping people during vulnerable moments in their lives.
As a black student pursuing a future in STEAM, I am also aware of the importance of representation in healthcare. I want to be someone patients can see themselves in; someone who understands cultural experiences, builds trust, and helps bridge gaps in care. I also hope to inspire other young black students who may not always see themselves represented in science and healthcare fields. I want them to know that they belong in these spaces and that their goals are achievable.
Furthering my education in STEAM will allow me to build a future where I can serve my community while also inspiring others who come from backgrounds like mine. I hope to become a healthcare professional who not only provides quality patient care, but also encourages younger students, especially minority students, to pursue careers in science and healthcare.
This scholarship would have a life-changing impact on my educational journey. Pursuing higher education can be financially challenging, and this scholarship would help reduce the burden of tuition, books, and other academic expenses. More importantly, it would allow me to focus more on my studies, clinical experiences, and professional growth rather than financial stress. With this support, I would have greater opportunities to participate in internships, volunteer experiences, and leadership programs that will strengthen my education and prepare me for a successful career in healthcare.
Receiving this scholarship would not only invest in my future, but also in the communities and patients I hope to serve one day. I am committed to using my education, determination, and compassion to make a lasting impact in healthcare. By pursuing a career in STEAM, I hope to contribute to a future where innovation, equity, and empathy work together to improve lives and create opportunities for generations to come.

Growing up, I witnessed firsthand how healthcare can change lives, not only through medicine but through compassion, patience, and human connection. These experiences inspired me to pursue a career in nursing. My goal is to first earn my Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license and then continue my education to become a Registered Nurse (RN). Nursing interests me because it combines science, critical thinking, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives every day. I want to be someone who provides comfort, support, and quality care to patients during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
One of the biggest influences on my decision to pursue nursing is my mother. She came to the United States from Nigeria with limited English and worked tirelessly to build a better future for her 4 kids. Despite challenges and setbacks, she persevered, became a registered nurse, and is currently pursuing her master’s degree to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). Watching her dedication to helping others inspired me to follow a similar path in healthcare. Her resilience taught me the importance of hard work, determination, and compassion; which qualities that are essential in nursing.
My personal experiences with family health issues have also strengthened my passion for this field. I have seen loved ones struggle with diabetes, high blood pressure, and the lasting effects of stroke. Witnessing these health challenges opened my eyes to how important nurses are in patient care and recovery. Nurses are often the people who spend the most time with patients, educating them, encouraging them, and helping them manage their conditions. Seeing how healthcare professionals supported my family made me realize that I want to provide that same level of care and reassurance to others facing similar situations.
Although I do not yet have formal medical experience through internships or clinical work, I have been involved in serving my community. Alongside my mother and CAC Faith Church, I help feed homeless individuals in our community. This experience has taught me empathy, humility, and the importance of treating every person with dignity and kindness regardless of their circumstances. Volunteering has shown me that small acts of care can have a lasting impact on someone’s life. These experiences have strengthened my communication skills and my desire to continue serving others through nursing.
My goal for a successful career is not only to become an RN but also to continue growing professionally and personally throughout my journey. I want to work in an environment where I can advocate for patients, provide compassionate care, and continue learning new skills. I also hope to inspire others in my community by showing that perseverance and dedication can lead to success, even when obstacles arise.
Nursing is more than a career choice for me; it is a calling rooted in compassion, resilience, and service. I am committed to working hard to achieve my goals and to becoming a nurse who makes a positive difference in the lives of patients and families every day.
Let Your Light Shine Scholarship
Legacy is not just about personal achievements, it is about the impact we leave on others and the world. My goal is to create a legacy built on compassion, service, and empowerment. Inspired by my mother’s resilience and dedication as a nurse, I have learned that true success is measured by how we uplift others. This belief fuels my passion for healthcare and my dream of opening a restaurant that serves not only food but also hope to low-income families and the homeless.
I envision a restaurant that operates with a pay-what-you-can model, ensuring that no one is turned away due to financial hardship. For those who cannot afford to pay, meals will be available through a “community service exchange,” where individuals can volunteer their time in various ways, such as helping with cleaning, serving meals, or assisting with outreach programs. Additionally, I plan to partner with local farms and grocery stores to reduce food waste and provide fresh, nutritious meals. Beyond serving food, the restaurant will offer job training programs to help those in need develop culinary, hospitality skills, or even everyday skills, giving them opportunities for stable employment and self-sufficiency.
Shining my light means using my talents and passions to make a difference. Whether through leadership, service, or simply offering kindness, I strive to be a source of hope and encouragement. I have always been drawn to helping others, whether volunteering at shelters, assisting in community food drives, or supporting peers in their personal and academic growth. In my future nursing career, I will continue to bring this same spirit of service by advocating for vulnerable populations and ensuring equitable access to healthcare.
My restaurant will be an extension of my commitment to community care. It will not only nourish bodies but also restore dignity and hope. Through mentorship programs, I will guide young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them gain skills and confidence to pursue their dreams. By integrating my healthcare background, I will incorporate wellness initiatives, such as nutrition education and partnerships with healthcare providers to offer free screenings and resources.
A legacy is built through consistent, meaningful actions. Whether in nursing or business, my goal is to be a beacon of change, ensuring that no one is left behind. By combining my passion for service with my entrepreneurial spirit, I will create a lasting impact one meal, one opportunity, and one life at a time.
ADHDAdvisor's Mental Health Advocate Scholarship for Health Students
Mental health has always been a significant focus in my life, both personally and in how I support those around me. As a nursing student and someone deeply empathetic to the struggles people face, I have made it a priority to offer emotional support to friends, family, and peers in my community. Whether through active listening, encouraging others to seek professional help, or simply being present during difficult times, I have strived to create a safe and supportive space for those in need. I firmly believe that even small acts of kindness and understanding can have a profound impact on someone’s mental well-being.
One way I have been involved in helping others with their mental health is by volunteering at a local community center, where I assist with mental health awareness workshops. These workshops aim to reduce stigma and educate attendees about recognizing signs of mental health struggles and accessing resources. This have not only helped others but also deepened my understanding of the importance of emotional support and community.
My future career as a nurse will allow me to expand these efforts on a larger scale. I plan to specialize in mental health nursing to provide compassionate and evidence-based care to patients struggling with mental health conditions. In this role, I will advocate for holistic care that addresses both the physical and emotional aspects of health. My goal is to create environments where patients feel heard, valued, and empowered to take steps toward recovery.
Beyond clinical practice, I hope to continue participating in community outreach programs to promote mental health awareness and education. By combining my nursing expertise with my passion for emotional support, I aim to bridge gaps in mental health care and contribute to breaking the stigma that often prevents individuals from seeking help. Whether in a hospital, clinic, or community setting, I am committed to being a resource for those in need of both care and compassion.
Ultimately, my studies and future career will enable me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others by supporting their mental health and emotional well-being. This mission is not just a professional goal but a deeply personal one, rooted in my belief that everyone deserves to feel understood and supported.

Currently, I am pursuing an associate degree in nursing with the goal of becoming a registered nurse, a career path that aligns with my commitment to improving the lives of others and serving as an advocate for those in need.

These values mirror Patrick Visaggi’s love for cooking and family, and I strive to carry them forward in my personal and professional life.
In addition to my cultural roots, I draw inspiration from Patrick’s service in the U.S. Navy and his advocacy for workers’ rights. Thank you for helping me take another step toward realizing my potential and making a meaningful impact in the world.
Black Leaders Scholarship
Unsung Hero of Justice: Pauli Murray
When we think of Black leaders who have shaped history, names like Martin Luther King Jr. or Rosa Parks often come to mind. However, one figure who has not received the recognition they deserve is Pauli Murray—a trailblazing civil rights activist, lawyer, poet, and the first Black woman ordained as an Episcopal priest. Murray’s contributions to racial and gender equality laid the groundwork for transformative change, yet their story often remains overshadowed in mainstream history.
Pauli Murray inspires me not only because of their groundbreaking achievements but also because of their resilience in the face of relentless adversity. Born in 1910, Murray grew up in the segregated South, where the injustice of Jim Crow laws shaped their lifelong fight for equality. Despite facing systemic racism, sexism, and economic hardship, Murray's relentless pursuit of education and justice exemplifies a commitment to dismantling barriers for future generations.
Murray’s legal scholarship profoundly influenced the civil rights movement. Their 1950 book States’ Laws on Race and Color was described by Thurgood Marshall as the “bible” of the civil rights movement and was instrumental in crafting the arguments that led to the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision, which declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional. Despite this pivotal contribution, Murray’s name is rarely mentioned in discussions of this case or the broader civil rights legal strategies.
Beyond racial justice, Murray was also an early advocate for gender equality. In the 1960s, they co-founded the National Organization for Women (NOW) and were one of the first to argue that the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment could be applied to fight gender discrimination. This legal theory later became central to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s arguments in gender equality cases. Ginsburg herself credited Murray as a significant influence, yet this recognition has not translated into widespread acknowledgment of Murray’s work.
What makes Pauli Murray especially inspiring is their ability to advocate for intersectionality before the term existed. As a queer person of color, Murray’s identity was at the crossroads of multiple forms of discrimination. They refused to let societal limitations define them, breaking barriers in every field they entered. Their ordination as the first Black Episcopal priest in 1977 was another testament to their courage and determination to challenge exclusionary systems.
Murray’s story resonates with me because it highlights the importance of fighting for justice even when recognition and rewards may not follow. Their life is a reminder that true leadership often involves planting seeds of change whose fruits may only be enjoyed by future generations.
Honoring Pauli Murray during Black History Month is crucial because their work embodies the essence of the movement—courage, innovation, and an unwavering belief in equality. Murray’s legacy teaches us that history is often shaped not just by those in the spotlight but also by those working tirelessly behind the scenes. By bringing their story to light, we not only pay tribute to their contributions but also inspire others to continue the fight for justice and equity.
Pauli Murray’s life inspires me to strive for justice in all its forms, to champion the rights of those whose voices are unheard, and to never underestimate the power of resilience and intellect in creating a more inclusive world. Their legacy reminds us that while progress may be slow, it is built by the efforts of those brave enough to challenge the status quo.
Sean Carroll's Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship
The quest to better understand the nature of our universe is not just a scientific endeavor but a deeply human one. It is an exploration of where we come from, why we exist, and where we are heading. Understanding the universe allows us to expand the boundaries of knowledge, improve life on Earth, and inspire the next generation of thinkers, innovators, and dreamers. It is a pursuit that bridges curiosity with purpose, encouraging us to examine not only the cosmos but also our own humanity.
One of the most compelling reasons to study the universe is the potential for discovery. Our understanding of fundamental concepts—such as the origins of the Big Bang, the nature of dark matter and dark energy, and the mysteries of black holes—remains incomplete. Each new piece of the cosmic puzzle brings us closer to answering some of the most profound questions humanity has ever asked: How did the universe begin? Are we alone in its vast expanse? What is the ultimate fate of everything we know? These questions inspire collaboration across nations, disciplines, and generations, fostering an environment of shared discovery.
Exploring the universe also has practical applications that significantly impact life on Earth. Technologies developed for space exploration, such as satellite systems, GPS, and medical imaging, have revolutionized how we live and work. By studying planetary systems, we can better understand Earth’s climate and develop strategies for combating challenges such as climate change. Learning from the universe's extremes, like the radiation environments of other planets, has informed advancements in materials science, energy efficiency, and human health. The more we uncover about the universe, the more tools we gain to address the pressing issues facing humanity today.
In addition to advancing science and technology, understanding the universe nurtures a sense of humility and unity. The "pale blue dot" image of Earth taken by Voyager 1 reminds us of our shared existence on this tiny planet amidst the vast cosmos. Recognizing this interconnectedness inspires collective action to care for our environment, respect cultural diversity, and work toward global peace. By exploring the universe, we broaden our perspective and cultivate the empathy needed to build a better world.
In my own pursuit of knowledge about the universe, I aim to employ several key ideas and concepts. First is the idea of interdisciplinary learning. The universe’s complexity requires a combination of physics, chemistry, biology, and philosophy to fully comprehend. I hope to approach the study of the universe with a mindset that embraces diverse fields and synthesizes their insights into cohesive understanding.
Second is the concept of innovation. Humanity’s progress in understanding the universe has always been fueled by creativity and the courage to think differently. From Galileo’s telescope to the James Webb Space Telescope, innovation has been the driving force behind breakthroughs. I aspire to contribute to this tradition by supporting creative approaches to learning and solving problems. Whether it’s exploring how advancements in artificial intelligence can accelerate data analysis in astrophysics or using simulation technology to study planetary systems, innovation will be at the heart of my efforts.
Lastly, I want to emphasize the importance of accessibility and education. As someone who believes in the power of knowledge, I hope to advocate for opportunities that make science available and engaging for everyone. Whether through public outreach programs, writing, or mentoring, I want to inspire curiosity about the universe in others and help bridge the gap between complex scientific concepts and everyday understanding.
Understanding the universe is a never-ending journey—one that challenges us to think bigger, question deeper, and dream bolder. It is important not just for the answers we might find but for the questions it encourages us to ask. By continuing to study the universe, we can unlock possibilities we never imagined, deepen our connection to one another, and build a future shaped by knowledge, curiosity, and wonder.

It will enable me to build a future where success is not just my own but shared with every life I have the privilege to impact.
Women in Healthcare Scholarship
A Calling to Care: My Journey Toward a Degree in Healthcare
I have chosen to pursue a degree in healthcare because it aligns with my passion for helping others and my deep-rooted desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. This calling was inspired by my mother, whose journey as a registered nurse (RN) and immigrant has profoundly shaped my perspective on the power of resilience, compassion, and determination in achieving one’s dreams.
My mother came to this country from Nigeria with a vision of creating a better life for her children. As an RN working tirelessly while pursuing her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a focus on Psychiatric Mental Health, she showed me and my siblings what it means to be selfless and determined. She balanced the demands of her career and her education while raising me and my 3 siblings with unwavering love and support. Watching her strive not only for her dreams but also for her kids inspired me to follow in her footsteps and contribute to her legacy of caring for others.
From a young age, I’ve been drawn to helping people improve their lives, whether by lending a listening ear, offering support during tough times, or celebrating their victories. Nursing offers the perfect blend of science, empathy, and purpose, allowing me to combine my love for connecting with people with my desire to solve problems and advocate for holistic care. As a nurse, I would want to provide care that goes beyond treating symptoms to addressing the underlying factors that impact a person’s well-being.
As a woman entering the healthcare field, I hope to bring a voice of empathy and empowerment to my work. Women are often the backbone of caregiving in many cultures, yet their contributions are sometimes undervalued. By pursuing this degree, I want to honor my mother’s sacrifices and represent the strength and compassion women bring to healthcare. I also aspire to be a role model for other women, especially immigrants and minorities, showing them that their dreams are achievable no matter the obstacles.
My ultimate goal is to specialize as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to address the significant gaps in mental health care. I’ve witnessed firsthand the toll that untreated mental illness can take on individuals and families. By providing empathetic and culturally sensitive care, I want to help break the stigma around mental health and create a safe space for people to heal. Through education, advocacy, and evidence-based practices, I hope to make mental health care more accessible and equitable for underserved populations.
Choosing a career in healthcare is not just about my personal ambitions—it’s about building a future where care is inclusive, transformative, and deeply human. By dedicating my life to nursing, I will carry forward the values instilled by my mother while creating positive, lasting impacts for my patients and the community. Her journey has inspired me to dream big, and now I am ready to turn those dreams into action by becoming a nurse who helps others achieve their best selves.
Healing Self and Community Scholarship
Revolutionizing Accessibility and Affordability in Mental Health Care
My unique contribution to mental health care would be leveraging technology to create accessible, low-cost solutions that bridge the gap between individuals and the support they need. As a future Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I envision developing a comprehensive telehealth platform that combines virtual therapy sessions, self-help tools, and community-based resources. This platform would address barriers such as transportation, stigma, and limited provider availability while offering sliding-scale payment options to ensure affordability.
I aim to incorporate evidence-based interventions, such as mindfulness programs and cognitive-behavioral therapy modules, into digital formats that patients can access anytime. Partnering with schools, workplaces, and local organizations, I would also advocate for mental health awareness campaigns to normalize seeking care and identify resources early.
Additionally, I would prioritize culturally competent care by collaborating with diverse professionals who can meet the unique needs of underserved communities. By integrating telemedicine with localized outreach efforts, my approach would create a seamless blend of technology and human connection.
This vision extends beyond treating mental illness to promoting preventative care and holistic wellness. By making mental health care affordable and accessible, I hope to empower individuals to take control of their mental well-being and build healthier, more resilient communities.

I am driven to build a future that fosters healing and understanding for those who feel unseen.
Building this future requires a solid foundation of education, clinical expertise, and advocacy. Through my studies and my focus on evidence-based practices, I am equipping myself with the tools to serve individuals facing mental health challenges. I aim to create safe spaces for patients to explore their struggles and empower them to reclaim control over their lives. By integrating mindfulness-based interventions, trauma-informed care, and patient-centered approaches, I hope to innovate in areas where mental health services often fall short.

Turning Adversity Into Opportunity: My Journey Toward Nursing
Adversity has been a constant companion on my journey toward achieving my career aspirations, but it has also been my greatest teacher. Each challenge I have faced has pushed me to grow stronger, develop resilience, and remain steadfast in my commitment to becoming a nurse. The steps I’ve taken to confront and overcome obstacles have not only strengthened my resolve but also shaped the compassionate, determined individual I am today.
One of the most significant challenges I faced was during the COVID-19 pandemic when my father fell gravely ill. As the virus ravaged his body, I felt powerless, watching helplessly while medical professionals worked tirelessly to save his life. This experience was emotionally overwhelming, but it was also transformative. It became the "aha" moment that solidified my decision to pursue nursing. The compassion and expertise of the nurses who cared for my father inspired me to dedicate my life to providing the same level of care and support to others.
Confronting this personal crisis required me to find strength within myself to keep moving forward. I sought support from my family, leaned on my faith, and immersed myself in research about nursing programs and healthcare. This adversity taught me the importance of perseverance and the power of channeling pain into purpose. I realized that while I couldn’t change the past, I could work toward a future where I could help others in similar situations.
Balancing my return to school as a non-traditional student has been another hurdle. I juggled coursework with a demanding job and family responsibilities, often feeling stretched thin. To manage these challenges, I established a structured routine, prioritized time management, and sought out resources such as academic advisors and study groups. I also leaned on my support network, including mentors and peers who understood the unique struggles of returning to school later in life.
Mental adversity has also played a role in my journey. There were moments when self-doubt crept in—when I questioned whether I could succeed in such a demanding field or whether I had waited too long to pursue my dreams. To combat these feelings, I practiced mindfulness and focused on celebrating small victories, like acing an exam or completing a challenging clinical rotation. I reminded myself of why I started this journey and the difference I hope to make as a nurse, which reignited my motivation during difficult times.
Financial challenges have also tested my resilience. Pursuing a nursing degree requires significant investment, and there were times when financial strain threatened to derail my progress. I took on extra shifts at work, applied for scholarships, and sought out resources to help offset the costs of tuition and textbooks. Each step I took reinforced my commitment to achieving my career goals, even in the face of difficulty.
Through these experiences, I have learned that adversity, while daunting, can be a powerful catalyst for growth. It has taught me to persevere, adapt, and remain focused on the bigger picture. These lessons will serve me well in my future career as a nurse, where I will face high-pressure situations and the emotional demands of caring for others.
My journey has been anything but linear, but every setback has been a stepping stone to success. I am more committed than ever to achieving my career aspirations and using the lessons I’ve learned to provide compassionate, high-quality care to those who need it most. Adversity has shaped me into a resilient, empathetic individual, and I am ready to channel these qualities into making a meaningful impact in the world of nursing.

Embracing My Journey as a Non-Traditional Student
Returning to school as a non-traditional student has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. My path to higher education has not followed the conventional trajectory, but every twist and turn has given me a deeper appreciation for the opportunity to pursue my goals and a clearer understanding of what I want to achieve.
I first entered the workforce after high school, focusing on providing for my family and exploring various career interests. At the time, I believed that delaying college would allow me to figure out my passions and priorities. For years, I worked in roles that provided financial stability but lacked the sense of purpose I craved. However, it wasn’t until a personal experience—the illness of a loved one during the COVID-19 pandemic—that I realized I was meant to become a nurse.
My father’s struggle with COVID-19 was an eye-opening moment that revealed both the vulnerabilities in our healthcare system and the incredible dedication of nurses. Watching his caregivers demonstrate unwavering compassion and skill, I knew I wanted to be part of a profession that makes such a profound difference in people’s lives. This moment catalyzed my decision to return to school and pursue a career in nursing, despite the challenges of balancing academics with work and family responsibilities.
As a non-traditional student, I bring unique experiences and perspectives to my educational journey. My time in the workforce taught me resilience, adaptability, and the value of hard work. These traits have become assets in my studies, allowing me to approach challenges with determination and focus. Additionally, my years away from the classroom have given me a deeper appreciation for the privilege of education, motivating me to make the most of every opportunity.
However, returning to school as an adult learner is not without its hurdles. Financial constraints, balancing work with coursework, and the demands of family life all add layers of complexity to the pursuit of my goals. This is where a scholarship would be transformative.
Receiving this scholarship would provide critical financial support, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on the financial burdens of tuition and textbooks. It would also serve as a powerful affirmation of my decision to pursue nursing, encouraging me to push through any obstacles that arise. With this scholarship, I could devote more time to excelling in my classes, gaining hands-on experience during clinical rotations, and preparing for my future as a compassionate and skilled nurse.
My ultimate goal is to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), specializing in providing care to underserved populations. I am particularly passionate about addressing the stigma surrounding mental health and ensuring that all individuals have access to the care they need. This scholarship would help me take one step closer to achieving this vision by easing financial stress and enabling me to invest fully in my education.
In conclusion, my journey as a non-traditional student has been shaped by perseverance, adaptability, and an unwavering desire to make a difference in the world. This scholarship would not only help me achieve my educational goals but also empower me to give back to my community as a nurse who embodies compassion, dedication, and resilience. Thank you for considering my application and for supporting students like me who are striving to transform their dreams into reality.

My Vision as a Future Nurse
Becoming a nurse has always been more than a career goal; it is a calling to serve others, to be a source of compassion and strength during some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives. My vision for myself as a nurse in the future is multifaceted, grounded in a commitment to holistic care, lifelong learning, and making meaningful contributions to both the healthcare system and the communities I serve.
In the future, I see myself as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), specializing in providing mental health care to individuals of all ages. My decision to focus on this field stems from a personal connection to mental health issues, as I have witnessed firsthand how untreated mental health conditions can affect individuals, families, and communities. I want to be a beacon of hope for those who feel isolated or misunderstood, offering them evidence-based treatments, a listening ear, and a nonjudgmental space to heal.
My vision extends beyond clinical practice; I aspire to be an advocate for mental health awareness and destigmatization. As a PMHNP, I plan to work closely with underserved populations, including those in rural or low-income areas, where access to mental health services is often limited. By establishing outreach programs, partnering with community organizations, and leveraging telehealth technologies, I aim to break down barriers to care and ensure that mental health services are accessible to all.
In addition to clinical practice and advocacy, education will play a significant role in my career. I envision mentoring nursing students and other healthcare professionals, sharing the knowledge and skills I have gained to inspire the next generation of nurses. By teaching the importance of empathy and cultural competence, I hope to contribute to a more compassionate and inclusive healthcare system.
To bring this vision to life, I recognize the importance of setting concrete goals and acquiring the necessary resources. My first step is completing my nursing degree and gaining hands-on experience as a registered nurse in a psychiatric or behavioral health setting. This foundational experience will allow me to develop the clinical expertise and emotional resilience needed to excel as a PMHNP.
Next, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in nursing with a specialization in psychiatric mental health. This advanced education will provide me with the skills to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, prescribe medications, and design individualized care plans. I also intend to stay informed about advancements in the field by attending conferences, participating in professional organizations like the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, and engaging in continuing education.
Financial planning and resource management are also essential aspects of my journey. To support my educational goals, I am seeking scholarships, grants, and other funding opportunities. This scholarship, in particular, will play a pivotal role in alleviating the financial burden of tuition and allowing me to focus on my studies and clinical training. Beyond education, I plan to invest in resources like telehealth platforms and mobile clinics to expand access to care in underserved areas.
While my primary focus is on mental health, my vision as a nurse also includes a holistic approach to patient care. I believe in addressing not only the physical and mental aspects of health but also the social, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. By collaborating with other healthcare professionals, social workers, and community leaders, I aim to provide comprehensive care that empowers patients to achieve their best quality of life.
Long-term, I hope to combine my passion for mental health with my love for cooking by creating a wellness center that integrates nutrition education, mental health services, and community support. This center would offer cooking classes, stress management workshops, and therapy sessions, creating a space where individuals can heal and grow in a supportive environment.
Ultimately, my vision as a nurse is rooted in the belief that every person deserves dignity, respect, and access to quality care. I want to be a leader in transforming the mental health landscape, reducing stigma, and fostering a culture of compassion within healthcare. By staying true to these values and continually striving for excellence, I hope to leave a lasting impact on the lives of my patients and the nursing profession as a whole.
Nursing is not just a profession for me; it is a way to make the world a better place, one patient at a time. Whether through direct care, education, advocacy, or community outreach, I am committed to being a nurse who embodies empathy, innovation, and a relentless dedication to improving the well-being of others.

My Journey to Nursing: From Culinary Dreams to Compassionate Care
My educational journey has been anything but linear, yet every step has shaped the person I am today and the nurse I aspire to become. Initially, my dreams were rooted in the kitchen. Growing up, I had a deep love for cooking, finding joy in creating meals that brought people together. This passion led me to pursue culinary school, envisioning a career as a chef and, eventually, owning my own restaurant. However, life had other plans, and an unexpected moment of clarity redirected my path.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, my father became gravely ill with the virus. Watching him struggle to breathe, unable to care for himself, and seeing the immense effort of the nurses who cared for him sparked an “aha” moment that would change my life forever. I realized how helpless I felt, unable to provide the care he needed. At the same time, I was struck by the compassion, skill, and resilience of the nurses who were there for him when we, as his family, could not be. Their dedication inspired me and ignited a desire to step into a role where I could make that kind of difference in someone else’s life.
This moment of realization led me to make the difficult decision to change my career path. While my love for cooking remains, I recognized that nursing offered a unique opportunity to combine my passion for helping others with the meaningful impact of healthcare. I returned to school with determination, enrolling in a nursing program and immersing myself in coursework that would prepare me for this new journey.
Transitioning from culinary aspirations to healthcare was not without challenges. I had to adapt to a rigorous academic environment and learn a completely new set of skills. However, the qualities that drew me to cooking—patience, creativity, and the ability to work under pressure—have also served me well in nursing. Whether perfecting a recipe or responding to a patient's needs, attention to detail and a willingness to put others first are key.
My journey has taught me resilience and the importance of following one’s calling, even when it requires stepping out of your comfort zone. The support of my family and the memory of my father’s battle with COVID-19 continue to motivate me on this path. Each class I complete and every clinical rotation I attend reaffirms that I am exactly where I am meant to be.
Today, I am steadily working toward becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). This field resonates with me because of its focus on addressing mental health challenges that often go overlooked. I am particularly drawn to the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with patients and provide holistic care that treats both the mind and body.
Although I have switched from pursuing culinary dreams to nursing, the core of my purpose remains the same: to serve others. I still envision using my love for cooking to connect with people, whether by creating a warm environment for my patients or by integrating nutrition into holistic care plans. One day, I hope to merge these passions by opening a small restaurant that not only serves nourishing meals but also supports mental health initiatives in the community.
The path I have taken may be unconventional, but it has equipped me with the empathy, adaptability, and drive necessary to thrive in nursing. My father’s experience and my own journey of rediscovery have shown me the transformative power of care and compassion, and I am honored to follow this calling.
Wicked Fan Scholarship
The story of Wicked resonates deeply with me because of its powerful themes of friendship, individuality, and the complexities of good and evil. From the moment I first encountered the narrative, I was captivated by the way it reimagines a classic tale, shifting the focus to characters who are often misunderstood. The movie takes these elements to new heights, combining stunning visuals, a phenomenal cast, and an unforgettable soundtrack to create an experience that is as thought-provoking as it is magical.
One of the reasons I am a fan of Wicked is its emphasis on challenging perceptions. The story reveals the untold truth about Elphaba, the "Wicked Witch of the West," and forces the audience to question preconceived notions about good and bad. This exploration of perspective has inspired me to approach the world with greater empathy, recognizing that everyone’s story is shaped by their unique struggles and choices.
The friendship between Elphaba and Glinda is another aspect that makes Wicked so special to me. Their bond, though fraught with misunderstandings, shows how people with contrasting personalities and values can grow from each other. It reminds me of my own friendships, which have taught me the importance of embracing differences while staying true to myself.
Finally, the music of Wicked is nothing short of transformative. Songs like Defying Gravity have become anthems in my life, encouraging me to rise above challenges and pursue my dreams with courage. The lyrics remind me that it’s okay to stand out and take risks, even if others don’t understand my choices.
In every way, Wicked speaks to the power of resilience, authenticity, and human connection. It’s more than a movie to me—it’s a story that continues to inspire me to embrace my uniqueness and strive for greatness, no matter the odds.

Overcoming Challenges Through Faith
Life often presents us with challenges that test our strength, perseverance, and faith. One of the most defining moments in my life came when I faced the loss of a loved one who meant everything to me. This experience not only tested my emotional resilience but also my belief in myself and the path I was on. In that moment of despair, I turned to my faith for guidance, and it became the foundation that helped me navigate one of the hardest times in my life.
Several years ago, I lost my grandmother unexpectedly. She was the cornerstone of our family and my biggest source of encouragement. She had always believed in my dreams, whether it was becoming a nurse or pursuing my passion for cooking. When she passed away, I felt lost. My sense of direction and confidence crumbled, and I began to question whether I could move forward without her unwavering support.
In my grief, I leaned on my faith for strength. Every night, I prayed for clarity and courage, asking for the ability to honor her memory in a way that aligned with the lessons she taught me. One particular verse from scripture, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13), resonated deeply within me during this time. It reminded me that while I may not have control over the challenges I face, I do have control over how I respond to them—and that I am never alone.
Faith gave me the courage to reframe my pain into purpose. I realized that the best way to honor my grandmother’s memory was to live a life that reflected her values: hard work, compassion, and an unwavering belief in myself. With this mindset, I returned to school with renewed determination to pursue my nursing degree. I also began to find solace in cooking, channeling my emotions into creating meals that brought joy to others—a skill my grandmother had always admired.
Throughout this journey, my faith provided not only emotional support but also practical guidance. I sought solace in my community, connecting with others who had experienced similar losses. Their stories and encouragement reminded me that grief is not a destination but a process, and with faith, I could find hope even in the darkest moments.
This experience taught me several valuable lessons. First, challenges are an inevitable part of life, but faith can provide the strength to face them with grace. Second, obstacles often reveal what truly matters. Losing my grandmother made me more determined than ever to achieve my goals and serve others, whether as a future Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner or as a restaurateur sharing my passion for cooking. Finally, I learned that relying on faith does not mean avoiding pain; it means trusting that there is a purpose even in struggle.
Today, I carry these lessons with me in everything I do. My faith remains a guiding light, helping me navigate not only personal challenges but also academic and professional endeavors. I hope to use the resilience I have gained through this experience to inspire others, offering them the same hope and compassion that my faith and community offered me.
Through faith, I overcame a profound loss and found the strength to turn pain into purpose. This journey reaffirmed my belief in the power of hope, perseverance, and connection—values I intend to carry with me as I continue to grow and work toward achieving my dreams.

My Goals and Plans to Achieve Them
I have two major goals in life: to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and to one day own a restaurant where I can share my love for cooking. Although these goals are different, they share a common foundation—my passion for caring for others and building meaningful connections.
Becoming a Nurse
My first goal is to pursue a career in nursing with a focus on mental health. I am deeply motivated by the opportunity to help those who struggle with mental health issues, many of whom face stigma and barriers to care. As a PMHNP, I aim to provide accessible and compassionate support to help individuals lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
To achieve this, I am currently working toward my nursing degree. After completing this step, I plan to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and eventually a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). My long-term goal is to gain the credentials and experience needed to specialize in psychiatric mental health. Along the way, I will seek opportunities in clinical settings to build my skills and knowledge in patient care.
This journey will require resources such as scholarships, access to clinical tools, and guidance from mentors. I also plan to join professional organizations like the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) to stay informed about advancements in the field and expand my professional network.
Owning a Restaurant
My second goal is to own a restaurant. Cooking has always been one of my greatest passions, and I love creating meals that bring people together. My vision is to open a welcoming restaurant that serves wholesome, flavorful food in an environment that fosters connection and comfort.
To achieve this dream, I will start by refining my culinary skills and learning more about restaurant management. I plan to gain experience in the industry, develop a solid business plan, and explore funding options like small business loans or partnerships. I also aim to start small with catering or pop-up events to establish a reputation and customer base before opening a physical location.
This goal requires resources like startup capital, business mentorship, and market research. I intend to align my restaurant’s menu with my nursing background by offering nutritious options that promote well-being, blending my two passions in a unique way.
Balancing Both Goals
Balancing these goals requires careful planning and patience. My immediate focus is on completing my nursing education and establishing a career as a PMHNP. Once I have achieved financial stability, I will begin taking steps toward my restaurant dream.
Interestingly, these goals complement each other. Nursing teaches empathy, problem-solving, and adaptability—skills that are invaluable in managing a restaurant. Similarly, cooking and creating a welcoming space reflect my desire to connect with and care for others.
Considering Challenges
I understand the challenges associated with both goals. Nursing requires intensive education and emotional resilience, while opening a restaurant involves financial risks and competition. However, I am confident that with perseverance, strategic planning, and support from mentors and peers, I can overcome these obstacles.
Conclusion
My goals to become a PMHNP and own a restaurant reflect my commitment to helping others in different but meaningful ways—through healing and nourishing. With determination, thoughtful planning, and the right resources, I am confident I can achieve these ambitions and make a lasting impact on the lives of others.
Michele L. Durant Scholarship
My name is Francine Onwuzo, and I am currently a college student working toward a nursing degree. Growing up, I witnessed the profound impact that compassion and service can have on others. My family instilled in me the value of giving back to the community, whether through small acts of kindness or larger organized efforts. These experiences shaped my decision to pursue a career in nursing, where I can dedicate my life to helping others during their most vulnerable moments.
Nursing is more than a profession for me; it is a calling that aligns with my values of empathy, resilience, and advocacy. My ultimate goal is to specialize in mental health as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). I have seen firsthand the struggles many individuals face with mental health, as well as the stigma surrounding it. These challenges inspire me to be a part of the solution, ensuring that mental health care is accessible, compassionate, and tailored to the needs of underserved populations.
Making a Positive Impact on the World and My Community
I firmly believe that change begins at the community level. Throughout my life, I have been involved in various initiatives that demonstrate this belief. For example, my family and I regularly organize events to feed the homeless every few months. These gatherings are more than just an opportunity to provide meals; they are a chance to listen to people’s stories and show them that they matter.
In my future role as a nurse, I plan to expand these efforts by organizing community mental health workshops and advocating for policies that address healthcare inequities. I envision creating spaces where people feel safe seeking help, particularly for mental health issues that are often overlooked or misunderstood. My goal is to be a bridge between underserved populations and the resources they need to thrive.
On a broader scale, I aspire to contribute to the ongoing conversation about improving mental health care through education and research. By staying informed about best practices and emerging therapies, I can ensure that my approach to care is evidence-based and impactful. My long-term vision is to see a world where mental health care is as normalized and accessible as physical health care.
Conclusion
My journey toward making a positive impact begins with education, compassion, and action. By pursuing a career in nursing, I am committing myself to a lifetime of service to individuals and communities in need. Whether I am working one-on-one with a patient or advocating for systemic change, I will carry with me the lessons I’ve learned about resilience, empathy, and the power of human connection.
This scholarship will help me continue this journey, enabling me to focus on my education and the practical skills needed to serve others. With this support, I will not only achieve my academic and professional goals but also empower others to lead healthier, happier lives. I am eager to take the lessons I’ve learned and the opportunities I’ve been given to make a lasting, positive impact on my community and beyond.

Community service has always been an important part of my life. For example, I regularly help my mom organize events to feed the homeless every two to three months. These experiences have shown me the importance of empathy and the power of small acts of kindness to make a significant difference.
One of my most challenging experiences was during my first year of college when I failed an important exam. I had underestimated the level of preparation needed and was devastated by the outcome.
