Growing up with a single mother has profoundly shaped my identity and values. I was born In the United States, my mother was not. My mother immigrated to the United States from Mexico in search for more, for better. From an early age, I witnessed my mother’s unwavering determination. She worked tirelessly to provide food, clothes, a home, transportation, for my brother and I even while battling cancer and the separation with my father. Her sacrifices taught me the importance of hard work and I learned to appreciate the little things in life, as my mother always emphasized gratitude, even in the face of adversity. The most important lesson my mother taught me was to always keep pushing forward. She would often say, "Llorar no va resolver nada" (Crying will not solve anything). At the time, her words stung; it felt as though she didn’t fully understand me. However, as I've grown, I've come to understand the meaning behind her message. Now, I carry through life the saying "The world doesn't stop for anyone." This realization drives me to persevere, no matter the challenges I face. I understand that I must keep moving forward and give my all to achieve my dreams. My mother always emphasized the importance of education as the key to a successful and a comfortable life. She prioritized my learning and consistently supported my endeavors, which fueled my determination to make the most of my educational opportunities. For example, In high School I took college classes to not only challenge myself but to earn college credit and raise my GPA. I also participated in multiple internships. Such as, Community Reading Buddies to help young children from the bay area improve their literacy rates while also earning 100 hours of community service. Stadum-Liang Immigration, where as an Intern I conducted legal research on immigration laws, regulations, and country conditions, review legal documents, including visa applications alongside the attorney, Communicate professionally with clients, Observe and translate client meetings, interviews, and declarations. Center for youth development through law program, during the program I took classes on the UC Berkeley School of Law campus, actively participating in discussions and case studies, as well as leading a mock trial by being the defense lawyer in a criminal case (which we won). At the program's graduation ceremony, I was honored to receive the Friedman Family Scholarship Award. Which recognized my outstanding dedication, participation, and leadership throughout the program. These opportunities have given me a significant advantage by allowing me to gain experience across various fields. In just a few months of being in college, I've already joined two clubs; CAB (Campus Activities Board) and Latinas Unidas. Additionally, I've applied for internships and started working. And even though I sometimes felt alone, especially during difficult times, I now realize the immense sacrifices she made for me to reach this point in my life, especially as I navigate college. As tuition is high my mother continues to make sacrifices pulling money from her savings to make sure I have a good education which is why I will not let her down. Her journey has instilled in me a passion to better my own life and help others. I aspire to be as kind, caring, resilient, hard-working, and patient as she is.
