Education is critical to success in life. While there are several valid methods of learning, a university-level education is not something that everybody can afford. I have been fortunate enough to receive some scholarships to help with my undergraduate schooling, and I earned these merit scholarships through rigorous study and active involvement in academics and extracurriculars throughout my high school and college careers. Along the way, I relied heavily upon playing and listening to music, having started to learn how to play the piano at the age of five. This brought me to where I am today: an undergraduate student majoring in Piano Performance with a plan to earn a Master’s degree in Piano Accompanying to further improve my musical skills. Throughout college, I attended accompanying classes to enhance my accompaniment and orchestra work experience, leading to the development of my diligence and dedication to music. I have actively volunteered in my community as a part of various academic and university organisations: I know that giving back to my community is critical, and each contribution of my time and services has been a rewarding experience. I have played the piano and flute at multiple entertainment and fundraising events, but when I am not able to volunteer my time, I make sure to give back financially to assist those who are in need. While there are several young Filipino-American artists leaving their marks on the world, there are admittedly not as many in the classical music industry. I would love to contribute to the Filipino-American community, making an impact in the world of music and inspiring Filipino musicians. I want to spread the message that, with perseverance, hard work, and dedication, anything is possible, and anyone, no matter their background, can succeed. There are always opportunities out there: resilience, resourcefulness, and taking initiative can go a long way, and these skills are usually founded upon a good education. If individuals find that college is the best path for them and they have the chance to go to school, they should stay determined and try to graduate. I hope to eventually become a part of a world-renowned symphony and represent the many talented Filipino Americans across the country. I would also love to have the opportunity to perform with great artists, but it is my ultimate dream to someday collaborate with acclaimed Filipino musicians around the world on a large-scale music project.

Learn the importance of saying no, but never completely shut the door of opportunity. Budget your time wisely: while it is equally important to try as many things as you'd like to enrich your academic experience, you can't say yes to everything. You'll quickly experience overwork and burnout when you realise that you've overwhelmed yourself with responsibilities. Explore as many clubs and attend as many meetings as you'd like in order to find activities you may enjoy, but if you don't enjoy something, it doesn't hurt to respectfully decline and say that you have too many responsibilities at that time. The preservation of your mental health is more important than being a people-pleaser: you can't help other people to the best of your abilities if you don't keep yourself in the best condition, and experiencing burnout is a greater setback than minimising your workload. This doesn't only apply to school: it can apply to work and social responsibilities as well. Prioritise your tasks, become aware of your personal limits, and keep time available to complete homework, study, practise self-care, and socialise with friends and family.
