Mental Health Scholarship for Women
College life is a constant balancing act—an experience that challenges your resilience while shaping your future. As a Political Science major at Spelman College with minors in Sociology and Refugee & Forced Migration Studies, I’ve felt the weight of balancing rigorous academics, leadership roles, and personal growth. My journey has shown me that prioritizing mental health isn’t just important—it’s essential to thriving in all areas of life.
Mental health is the cornerstone of my academic success and personal growth. College has shown me that when mental well-being is neglected, it affects every area of life. I’ve learned to prioritize self-care to prevent burnout and ensure I can show up fully for the opportunities I’m passionate about. My approach includes daily mindfulness practices, such as journaling or meditation, which help me process stress and stay grounded. Physical activity, like taking walks or doing yoga, also gives me moments of clarity and renewal.
Creating a strong support system has been another key to maintaining my mental health. As a commuter student, I’ve worked hard to build connections with peers, professors, and mentors who provide encouragement and understanding. These relationships remind me that I don’t have to carry the weight of college life alone, and they offer perspective when challenges arise.
Beyond personal practices, my commitment to mental wellness is reflected in my advocacy work. During my tenure as Programs Director for Spelman Democrats and Digital Director for the Young Democrats of Georgia’s Black Caucus, I’ve worked to amplify underrepresented voices on issues like education access, equity, and social justice. Leading initiatives such as the “Legislate Our Future” digital campaign series required balancing my drive for impact with the necessity of self-care. By recognizing and respecting my limits, I’ve been able to sustain my efforts and deliver meaningful results without sacrificing my well-being.'
Mental health also plays a role in shaping my future goals. As someone passionate about addressing global issues, I recognize that the pressures women face in leadership, academia, and professional settings can often feel overwhelming. The high expectations society places on women, coupled with financial stress and systemic inequities, contribute to the heightened rates of anxiety and depression among female college students. By prioritizing my mental health now, I’m building the resilience I’ll need to navigate these pressures and advocate for change on a larger scale.
Ultimately, mental health is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. It enables me to show up fully, pursue my goals with clarity and determination, and model the balance I hope to see in others. By continuing to prioritize self-care and advocating for wellness, I aim to create a life where I can thrive academically, personally, and professionally while inspiring others to do the same.
Bright Lights Scholarship
Throughout my academic journey, I have dedicated myself to understanding global challenges and advocating for underrepresented communities. As a Political Science major at Spelman College, with minors in Sociology and Refugee & Forced Migration Studies, I am deeply passionate about addressing systemic inequities and amplifying the voices of marginalized populations. My ultimate goal is to pursue a career in foreign policy and international affairs, where I can contribute to creating policies that empower communities globally.
One of the defining experiences of my academic career was my internship with AkiDwA, Ireland’s Women Migrant Network. Working with this organization allowed me to support initiatives that uplift migrant women and advocate for equitable policies. This experience not only expanded my understanding of global migration issues but also solidified my commitment to championing human rights on an international scale. Additionally, my roles as Digital Director for the Young Democrats of Georgia’s Black Caucus and Programs Director for Spelman Democrats have provided me with opportunities to engage my peers in meaningful civic dialogue and to lead initiatives that address social and political challenges.
I feel incredibly blessed to attend Spelman College, an institution that has nurtured my growth and encouraged me to dream boldly. However, the path to this opportunity has not been without its challenges. My family faces financial difficulties as my sister is also in college, and supporting two students simultaneously has required significant sacrifices. Watching my parents work tirelessly to help us achieve our goals has instilled in me a profound sense of gratitude and a determination to make the most of every opportunity. These challenges have strengthened my resolve to succeed and to use my education as a tool to create meaningful change.
This scholarship is more than just financial assistance; it is an investment in my future and the communities I aspire to serve. The support would enable me to focus more intently on my studies and professional development, ensuring that I am well-prepared for graduate school and a career in international policy. Additionally, it would help alleviate the financial burdens of pursuing educational and experiential opportunities, such as internships or specialized programs, that are critical to achieving my goals.
In the long term, I plan to utilize my education and experiences to influence policies that address global inequities, particularly those affecting women, migrants, and other vulnerable populations. I am committed to fostering inclusive and equitable solutions that empower communities and promote sustainable development. This scholarship will not only help me advance toward these aspirations but also allow me to continue breaking down barriers for others, ensuring that opportunities for education and leadership are accessible to all.
Public Service Scholarship of the Law Office of Shane Kadlec
My interest in public service is deeply rooted in my desire to advocate for marginalized communities and address systemic inequalities, both globally and domestically. Growing up in a one-income household, I witnessed the challenges faced by underserved populations, which fueled my commitment to pursue a career in public service. My father, a former district attorney, further shaped my understanding of justice and fairness. Watching him work on cases that impacted people’s lives reinforced my belief that law and policy must be tools for social change and equity.
In my political science courses, I have dedicated myself to understanding the systems perpetuating inequality and learning how to create policies to address them. My minors in sociology and refugee & forced migration studies have deepened my understanding of the social and global challenges contributing to injustice. These academic pursuits, combined with my hands-on experiences, have shown me that the fight for equity transcends borders, and policies must reflect the need for justice both in the U.S. and internationally.
My internship with AkiDwA, Ireland’s Women Migrant Network, was particularly transformative. Working directly with migrant women facing discrimination, exploitation, and systemic barriers to their rights expanded my understanding of how policies can protect or fail vulnerable populations. This experience strengthened my commitment to public service, with a focus on creating inclusive policies that address global migration crises while also recognizing the need for change in U.S. domestic policies.
While my international work has been deeply impactful, I am equally dedicated to creating change within the United States. As Digital Director for the Young Democrats of Georgia’s Black Caucus, I’ve been able to advocate for policies addressing racial justice, economic inequality, and access to education. This role has allowed me to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and push for reforms that address systemic inequities. The skills and insights I’ve gained from my international experiences with AkiDwA complement my work on the ground in Georgia, reinforcing my belief that public service requires a broad perspective—both local and global.
These experiences have shaped my belief that public service is not simply about crafting laws or policies but using the power of government to create meaningful change in people’s lives. My passion for justice is both global and domestic. Whether advocating for migrant women’s rights in Ireland or pushing for criminal justice reform in Georgia, my goal is to ensure that no one is left behind.
I am pursuing a career in public service because I believe law, policy, and advocacy can create a more just and equitable society. Inspired by my father’s work as a district attorney, I aspire to influence policy decisions that address inequities in the U.S. while engaging with global issues like human rights and migration. Public service offers a unique opportunity to make a direct impact on communities, and I am committed to using my skills to advocate for those whose voices are often ignored.

Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Billie Eilish’s music has really touched me, and my top three songs—“Blind Faith,” “Hostage,” and “Watch”—each mean a lot to me because they connect with my own experiences in unique ways.
“Blind Faith” hits home because it deals with trust and vulnerability, which are big themes for me given my struggles with anxiety and OCD. The song’s eerie vibe and deep lyrics remind me that it’s okay to face these tough emotions head-on. It helps me feel less alone in dealing with my mental health issues and gives me a bit of strength to keep pushing through.
“Hostage” speaks to me on a different level. Growing up Black in a predominantly white area, I often felt isolated and misunderstood. The song’s intense emotions and themes of longing and struggle reflect the feelings I’ve had about feeling different or out of place. It’s like Billie’s lyrics give voice to those complex emotions I’ve dealt with and help me process them better.
“Watch” stands out because of its message about self-worth and resilience. Students Impacted by Incarceration Scholarship
Incarceration has cast a long shadow over my life, shaping my perspectives and profoundly influencing my academic and career ambitions. My uncle's repeated incarcerations for drug-related offenses have been a constant, painful presence since I was born. This experience has taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, systemic injustice, and the urgent need for reform, steering my path toward social advocacy and justice.
Growing up, the instability caused by my uncle's absence was palpable. Family gatherings were often marked by his absence, and the emotional toll on my family, especially my father, was significant. These experiences exposed me to the harsh realities of the criminal justice system and its impact on families. I learned early on about the stigma and challenges that come with having an incarcerated family member, including financial strain and emotional distress. Witnessing my uncle's struggles both inside and outside prison walls ignited a sense of urgency in me to understand the root causes of his situation and the broader societal issues at play.
Academically, this personal connection to incarceration has driven me to delve deeply into sociology, criminal justice, and public policy. My coursework at Spelman College has provided a solid foundation in these areas, allowing me to critically analyze the systemic factors contributing to mass incarceration, such as poverty, lack of education, and inadequate mental health resources. Engaging with these subjects has broadened my understanding and fueled my passion for advocating for change.
My uncle's experiences have motivated me to take on leadership roles in organizations committed to social justice. As a member of the Young Democrats of Georgia, I have actively advocated for criminal justice reform, focusing on policies that address the root causes of crime and support rehabilitation over punishment. Serving on the executive board has given me practical experience organizing campaigns, engaging with policymakers, and mobilizing community support.
Furthermore, my involvement in the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International, has reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career in law, specifically in public interest law. I am determined to use my legal education to advocate for marginalized communities and work towards a more equitable justice system. The pain and disruption caused by my uncle's incarceration have underscored the importance of compassionate, informed legal representation and the need for systemic reform.
In conclusion, my uncle's incarceration has profoundly impacted my life, instilling in me a deep understanding of the criminal justice system's flaws and the urgent need for change. This experience has shaped my academic interests, driving me to explore sociology, criminal justice, and public policy, and has inspired my career ambitions in public interest law. I am committed to using my education and experiences to advocate for policies that promote rehabilitation, reduce recidivism, and support families affected by incarceration. By doing so, I hope to contribute to a more just and compassionate society, ensuring that future generations are spared the pain and disruption that my family has endured.

This fellowship is an opportunity to deepen my knowledge and expertise and as a platform to advocate for policies that promote peace, prosperity, and human dignity in the world's most vulnerable regions. As I chart my course for the future, I am driven by a profound sense of purpose and urgency. Now, more than ever, we need dedicated individuals willing to stand up and fight for justice, equality, and human rights.
