John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
My passion for mental health and commitment to underserved communities stems from my experiences as a first-generation Hispanic student. Growing up, I saw firsthand the barriers my community faced in accessing mental health care. Within my own family, mental health was stigmatized, leading important issues to go unaddressed. This personal experience ignited my desire to become a pediatric psychiatrist, determined to address the mental health disparities that disproportionately affect Hispanic populations. Through my studies in psychology and biology, I’ve come to understand how mental health impacts children’s development, particularly in underserved communities where access to care is limited. Children often cannot advocate for themselves, and untreated mental health conditions can shape their futures in ways that are avoidable with the right intervention. This understanding drives my mission to provide early intervention and care rooted in cultural humility. I believe that addressing mental health in childhood has the power to change lives and positively affect entire communities. A pivotal moment in my journey was volunteering at the Paluxy River Children’s Advocacy Center, where I provided support to families of children who had experienced trauma. Many of the families were Hispanic, and I found myself translating services for parents who didn’t speak English. Seeing the relief in their eyes as they understood the help available to them reminded me of my own family’s struggles, which I was often unaware of as a child. This experience reignited my passion to bridge the gap between underserved families and the care they desperately need. Additionally, my bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish has given me the ability to connect with Hispanic families in a way that many healthcare providers cannot. I’ve learned that language and cultural barriers can prevent families from seeking mental health services, which only compounds the stigma surrounding mental health. My goal is to break down these barriers by providing care that is both accessible and culturally attuned to the needs of Hispanic communities. Looking ahead, I aim to establish a mental health practice that not only provides high-quality care but also collaborates with schools, community centers, and non-profit organizations to promote early intervention and mental health awareness. I believe that creating healthier environments for children will have a ripple effect, fostering stronger families and brighter futures. Through pediatric psychiatry, I plan to make a lasting impact by addressing the root causes of mental health disparities in Hispanic communities. John Young’s legacy as a pioneer in aerospace engineering inspires me to pursue my professional passion with the same tenacity and commitment. Just as he made a lasting impact in his field, I aspire to lead change in mental health care, especially for underserved populations. With the support of the John Young Pursue Your Passion Scholarship, I can focus on my studies and bring my vision for change to life.

ducation has always been a transformative force in my life, opening doors to opportunities and shaping my future aspirations. Growing up as a first-generation Hispanic student in the United States, I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices my parents made to provide me with a better life. Their journey from Mexico to America, driven by the pursuit of better opportunities, instilled in me a profound appreciation for education. Their unwavering support and hard work have motivated me to strive for academic excellence and to leverage my education as a means of making a significant impact in my community and beyond. Pursuing a college degree in psychology, with a minor in biology on a pre-med track, has set the foundation for my future goals. This academic path is not just a career choice but a personal mission to address the mental health disparities that plague underserved communities, particularly within Hispanic populations. My education will equip me with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and tackle these complex issues. It will enable me to contribute to the field of pediatric psychiatry, where I aspire to provide culturally competent mental health care to children and adolescents who often suffer in silence due to stigma and lack of resources. Education will change my path forward by providing me with the tools to break down barriers and create a ripple effect of positive change. By pursuing an MD/PhD program, I will gain deeper insights into the biological and psychological aspects of mental health. This dual-degree program will allow me to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice, ensuring that evidence-based interventions are accessible to those who need them most. The critical thinking, research skills, and clinical expertise I acquire will empower me to develop innovative solutions tailored to the unique needs of my community. Giving back to society is an integral part of my educational journey. My ultimate goal is to establish a practice that not only provides high-quality mental health services but also collaborates with local organizations to address broader social determinants of health. I envision working with schools, community centers, and non-profit organizations to implement preventive measures and early intervention programs. By fostering a supportive environment and promoting mental health awareness, I aim to break the cycle of stigma and silence that surrounds mental health issues in Hispanic communities. Additionally, I am committed to mentoring and supporting future generations of students from similar backgrounds. By sharing my experiences and knowledge, I hope to inspire others to pursue their educational dreams and to contribute to the betterment of society. Education has the power to transform lives, and I am determined to use mine to create a more equitable and inclusive world. Through my dedication to mental health care and community engagement, I will strive to make a lasting impact and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to lead a healthy, fulfilling life.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
Growing up as a child of Mexican immigrants and a first-generation college student, I faced the dual challenge of navigating a new cultural landscape while dealing with mental health issues. My family’s Christian Baptist beliefs often led to dismissing mental health struggles as spiritual weaknesses, with feelings of sadness or anxiety being brushed off as something to be prayed away. This cultural and religious perspective resulted in years of internalized emotions and unspoken battles, creating a disconnect between my personal struggles and the understanding of those around me. These experiences have profoundly influenced my desire to pursue a career in psychology and medicine. My career goal is to become a pediatric psychiatrist, striving to give a voice to young individuals who, like me, have faced suppressed emotions and mental health challenges. I want to be the advocate I needed when I was younger and ensure that no child suffers in silence. To build a comprehensive understanding of human health and behavior, I chose to major in psychology with a minor in biology on a pre-med track. Courses such as Research Methods in Cellular/Molecular Biology and Psychological Survey Research Methods have provided me with the skills to explore critical issues in mental health. Additionally, participating in the Latino Scholars in HIV/AIDS Research Education (SHARE) program at GWU this summer, where I researched the relationship between substance abuse and risky sexual behavior within Latino populations, has deepened my understanding of health disparities and reinforced my commitment to addressing these issues. Beyond academics, my role as a Peer Health Educator has been instrumental in developing my communication and leadership skills. I have organized workshops on suicide awareness and mental health, aiming to make a meaningful impact on my college campus. These experiences have solidified my belief in the power of proactive measures to alleviate mental health issues and have strengthened my commitment to public health and preventive care. Looking ahead, I am driven by a desire to create meaningful change in mental health care. My aspiration to pursue an MD/PhD is motivated by a commitment to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice. I aim to ensure that evidence-based interventions are implemented to improve mental health outcomes for underserved communities. By advocating for marginalized populations and addressing the root causes of health disparities, I hope to foster an environment where mental health is widely understood, destigmatized, and valued. This scholarship represents not just financial support but an investment in my potential to effect lasting change through mental health advocacy and community service. Through my education and future career, I aspire to significantly impact future generations' mental well-being and contribute to a more equitable and compassionate healthcare system.
