At the age of four, I could not even comprehend the concept of what being a new immigrant was. Though there are some experiences I remember, it was hard for me as a child to understand the change I was about to go through. To provide my mother and me with a better life, my father had previously emigrated to America as a result of his employment. Because of how unsafe Nigeria was becoming for my family due to home invasions and kidnappings, my mother and I fled to join my father in America. All I knew at that young age was that my life would be different from anything I had previously known. My first home in the United States was in Rahway, New Jersey. Even though I was stepping into a brand-new setting, several of my classmates helped me feel at home. I attended two different elementary schools during my brief stay in New Jersey, and both had a sizable population of African immigrants and were predominately black. Since these were my only experiences of the American school system, I assumed this was how all the schools in America were. I believed that the core ideals of the United States were belonging to a community and working together. All of this, however, would alter as soon as my father accepted a new position in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I noticed right away that my new school had a much different atmosphere than my old school in Rahway. Because of the predominance of white students in the Pittsburgh schools I attended, I frequently received offensive comments. It was tough for a black girl to attend an all-white school, and coming from Africa as an immigrant brought additional challenges, such as a lack of understanding of my background. It was much more difficult to make friends in this environment. My sense of community in the United States was deeply shaken. Despite my academic success, I struggled to navigate the social aspect of school until I graduated from high school because I felt like I had lost my sense of belonging. I realized that community was always a very significant value for me, but after my different experiences, I have now learned that community is more complex than I had believed. These experiences led to me focusing my minor on Community and Justice Studies, which explores issues that affect communities, evaluates important social-action strategies, fosters ethical thinking, and actively involves students in civic responsibility. Exploring this subject had a significant influence on my choice to concentrate on community development for my senior thesis. I developed a strong interest in social issues, particularly why communities with a larger Black population suffer from a lack of community investment and have a disproportionately heavy police presence. Because of my experience as an immigrant child in a predominantly white society, I felt more connected to learning about issues such as economic and social inequality and bringing awareness about the importance of community. Furthermore, being a New American dramatically affected how I would navigate life as a student and also as a member of different societies. Though there was a struggle to integrate into society, it helped me establish community as a core value of mine. As a result, advocating for the provision of adequate resources and opportunities for success to poor Black and brown communities has become a passion of mine. As a Nigerian immigrant, I am appreciative of all of my experiences, positive and negative, since they have helped to mold who I am as a person and my ideals of community and togetherness.

My passion for computer science comes right from my father. My father studied computer engineering in his home country of Nigeria. Although he wasn’t able to continue his studies in America, he brought his interests with us by filling our household with computers—sometimes four or five at a time. I couldn't believe there was such a wide variety of activities I could do with these gadgets. I was initially more interested in computer gaming and interacting with others -- that is until I learned about coding. Making graphs or datasets in different programming languages allowed me to enlighten others while also creating programs that matched my interests, like playing games. Because of this, I knew I needed to pursue computer science. I didn't start getting interested in data analysis until I took my first data analytics course in my junior year. I discovered that data analysis could provide precise answers to inquiries regarding social justice, economics, and public policy, and allow me to tell stories that mattered to me. Near the end of my undergraduate career, I finished my thesis, which is called CriticalJustice: Visualizing the Impact of Crime Prevention on Neighborhood Development. This thesis combined the fields of computer science and community development and justice. In this thesis, I visualized factors in the determinants of crime and relationships with infrastructure that affect neighborhood development. This research investigated the relationship of police dispatches to these community neighborhoods. Both the Pittsburgh neighborhood where I grew up and the community in New Jersey where I lived had a high percentage of Black and brown residents and both communities were underfunded in terms of infrastructure. Plus, as I got older, I often questioned why our area was constantly the focus of law enforcement rather than the other communities with a predominantly white population. Due to my own experience growing up in a predominantly black and brown area, I decided to focus on this particular subject. I observed that the surrounding areas with a predominance of white residents had better-developed infrastructure and fewer police officers, and I wanted to investigate this discrepancy and bring awareness to the subject. Because of my experience as an immigrant child in a predominantly white society, I felt more connected to learning about issues such as economic and social inequality and bringing awareness about the importance of community. The research I conducted allowed me to understand what I want to achieve in my career. I wanted to combine my passion for data science with a job where my work would be able to assist those who were in need. I intend to use community data and different coding platforms to continue highlighting the gap across communities in terms of infrastructure and policing. My goal is to engage in policy-making after graduate school to guarantee that impoverished areas have access to the same resources and opportunities as affluent communities. I think the greatest approach to fostering community is to guarantee that each person has an equal opportunity to succeed, and I want to make sure that can be done for those who are in need.

From this program, it surprised me the different professions that aligned with my interest in community building and computer science. With this scholarship, I feel I will able to pursue my dream of continuing higher education to enhance my understanding of the connection between community and technology

I believe I am the best candidate for this scholarship because, similar to Chris, I struggled immensely trying to afford my undergraduate degree in computer science. I understand how discouraging that can be, but I never let that come in the way of my academic studies or my desire to combine technology with community. I am very passionate about this specific topic and I hope that I can drive change for those who are underprivileged.

Since I was a child, computers have been a prominent aspect of my life. This occurred because my father worked in the technology field even before he immigrated to America from the country of Nigeria. My earliest childhood memories consisted of seeing my father helping others with their computer issues since he specialized in the IT field and playing computer games on one of the several computers that my father had placed around our home. Because of the amount of technology surrounding my everyday life, I became enthralled with technology, and more specifically, computers. Therefore, I pursued a bachelor's degree in computer science in college after I graduated high school because of the programming classes I took during my junior and senior years of high school. In my junior year of college, I was selected, alongside 3 other individuals, for an internship with the company NetApp to create a cluster mobile application. I believe completing this internship helped to inspire my dream of becoming a UI developer. I was assigned to focus more on the front-hand part of the application, which deals with the design of the app. I enjoyed being able to alter the look of the app however I wanted and also utilizing the skills I had developed from my previous computer science classes with the app. Though I did understand some aspects of the back-hand portion of the app, which means the hard coding part, I was more comfortable with working with the front-hand portion of the app. I dream to create my own app alongside a group of developers and even a video game in the future with the abilities I learn as a UI developer. I hope that the software I create will be able to bring joy and also make lives more comfortable for other individuals. For instance, if I am able to go into the field of app development, I wish to create apps that will be accessible to children and even teenagers. I can speak from personal experience that technology plays a huge part in the development of youth, whether positive or negative. I want to be able to create app software that will be able to help teenagers navigate their lives during and even after high school that I feel is missing in society today. For example, I would like to create software that would be utilized by teenagers to help increase their mental health in several ways. Mental health is a topic that is not discussed enough in high schools, and it leaves several teenagers to fend for themselves, which I can confirm from personal experience. Because of this, I wish for the software I develop as a UI developer to be a part of the positive development of the youth.

I first migrated to the United States of America from the country of Nigeria when I was four years old in the year 2005 with just my mother because my father had migrated to the United States before us. My family soon realized after starting to get situated in the state of New Jersey, we will have to be completely rebuilding our lives from the ground up. We were placed in a very tiny, yet expensive, one-bedroom apartment which would soon not become enough space for us because my parents had plans to expand our family. Once my twin siblings were born, trying to live in this apartment, while also dealing with a bug infestation, was becoming more and more difficult for my family as time went on. Also, since we had just recently migrated to the United States of America, we were still in the process to obtain our green cards, so trying to find decent work to provide for our now 5-person household put a great amount of stress on my parents. As a child, I did not know of our financial situation in great detail because my parents wanted me to focus on what was important, my education. My parents have always put emphasis on how important education would be for me. Because of this, I tried my very hardest to excel in school, no matter the subject. Although our financial struggles, I learned to accept that aspect of my life and not let it hinder my success as a student. Because of my love of learning and the amount of technology surrounding my everyday life, I became enthralled with technology, and more specifically, computers. More specifically, I hope I am able to inspire students who look like me and have similar backgrounds as me.

However, though I was passionate about technology, it did come with hardships. After migrating to the United States, my family and I face significant financial struggles which I was oblivious to as a child. As I grew older, I saw the struggles my parents would face to make sure my siblings and I were able to live a good life, and I am eternally grateful to them for that. With that, I could understand why my father emphasized education throughout my life. Therefore, I pursued a bachelor's degree in computer science in college after I graduated high school because of the programming classes I took during my junior and senior years of high school. In my junior year of college, I was selected, alongside 3 other individuals, for an internship with the company NetApp to create a cluster mobile application.

I dream to create my app and/or video game in the future with the abilities I learn as a UI developer. I hope that the software I create will be able to bring joy and also make lives more comfortable for other individuals.
