These challenges often extend into adolescence and adulthood, impacting academic achievement, social relationships, and overall well-being. Trauma in early childhood can also perpetuate cycles of intergenerational adversity, as children who grow up in unsafe or unstable environments may struggle to develop healthy relational and coping skills, potentially repeating patterns observed in their caregivers. My interest in understanding and addressing these consequences stems from both personal and academic experiences. Growing up on the south side of the Bronx, as a daughter of a Guinean immigrant, in a majority African neighborhood, I was raised in an environment in which abuse and toxic behaviors were so familiar to me that they felt comfortable to abide. There was an alarming normalization of misogyny and oppressive gender roles in my upbringing. These formative observations sparked my enduring interest in how cultural dynamics influence intimate partner violence (IPV) and children’s development, guiding both my academic and professional pursuits. Although I have immense gratitude for who I am and the community I grew up in, the anti-women cultural framework was a noise I could not ignore. It was not until I had the privilege of receiving a scholarship award to attend a predominantly White boarding institution that I was exposed to different family dynamics. I began to recognize the deep harm these frameworks caused, not only in my community but also in the generations of children raised within it. As a minority individual, I have witnessed the mental health struggles of BIPOC communities and the barriers they face in accessing care due to systemic inequities, as well as stigma against mental health treatment. I aim to pursue a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology to serve historically marginalized populations, particularly women who have experienced IPV, and to examine the impacts of exposure to IPV in children. My research will explore how cultural narratives about gender and family roles shape women’s coping responses to IPV. The second part of my research will explore how culturally responsive interventions can mediate children’s psychosocial outcomes and disrupt cycles of intergenerational trauma. I then expanded my research training with Dr. Betty Lin’s Clinical Psychology Lab, focusing on risk, resilience, and adaptation in children and families from underserved communities using qualitative coding. Analyze emotional, behavioral, and physiological factors to promote health equity and equality, including assisting doctoral students with data collection. Recoding Barley's data and conducting literature reviews for papers, specifically a paper on black parenting and their parenting styles. As part of my work in Dr. Betty Lin’s lab, I am creating a quantitative research poster exploring how parent age relates to stress levels. Through this project, I have learned to interpret and present quantitative data while connecting it to broader questions about family development and stress. My academic foundation in developmental and culturally informed psychology was strengthened through research labs. Together, these experiences cultivated my abilities to design studies, analyze data, and interpret results through a culturally sensitive lens. Beyond research, my applied experiences have prepared me to translate findings into meaningful clinical practice. To encourage my passion for understanding immigrant mental wellbeing outside my personal experience, I work at Refugee & Immigrant Support Services of Emmaus (RISSE). I utilize my language skills to support Spanish- and Manika-speaking immigrants with government documents, accessing maternal and infant resources, and community supply operations and organizational initiatives. A previous position I held that encouraged teamwork, wellness, and understanding for others was that of a Resident Assistant. I provided mentorship, conflict mediation, and wellness programming for students from multicultural backgrounds. Both positions deepened my commitment to helping the marginalized, through language barriers, children's psychosocial development exposed through adversity, particularly with immigrant, refugee, and minority communities. Committed to the scientist-practitioner model, I seek to conduct culturally competent, trauma-informed research and translate findings into clinical practice to improve access and outcomes for underserved populations.

My name is Fatoumata Kake, and I am a proud Black woman, first-generation college student, and daughter of West African immigrants. I am studying for a Bachelor of Science in Human Development with minors in Psychology and Spanish at the University at Albany, SUNY, intending to achieve a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. I identify deeply with Michele L. Durant's legacy; Michelle was a "forever student"- a woman who never stopped learning and whose determination and perseverance continue to motivate me. My drive to have a long-lasting effect arose from observing the emotional and psychological burdens that females in my family and area carry. I have always had a pull toward comprehending human conduct, not merely in theory but as a force for building. A fierce hunger has directed my academic and study journey to give voice to those overlooked in mental health spaces, especially Black and Brown women and children suffering from trauma, domestic violence, and systemic injustice. As a result, I work in Dr. Betty Lin's clinical psychology research lab, which focuses on resilience and adaptation in underserved families. I have also collaborated with Dr. Tammy Ellis-Robinson on a literature review of adult understanding for special educators. These experiences have bolstered my research abilities and deepened my need for evenhandedness in mental health and education. Furthermore, my internship with the New York State Office of Mental Health exposed me to the difficulty of getting culturally efficient treatment, especially in impoverished areas. I presently serve as a Resident Assistant, helping scholars in their academic and emotional growth and making them feel distinguished. My leadership experiences have shown me that making a difference does not always necessitate a title or recognition; sometimes, all it takes is attention or encouragement. I also plan on obtaining real-world experience in hospital-based psychological labs through full-time employment as a research coordinator as I prepare to pursue graduate school. I aspire to become a licensed clinical psychologist who not only sympathizes with victims of trauma but also conducts research to improve the mental health profession. Ultimately, I hope to found a healing-focused office that delivers culturally responsible care to Black and Brown families, especially those who have historically been denied access to high-quality mental health care. Michelle L. Durant's tale has reminded me that ambition is frequently challenging but always purposeful. I am like her and committed to a lifetime of learning, mentoring, and helping others. If I received this scholarship, the debt I took out so many semesters ago to study would be lightened. However, more importantly, I would be given tribute to a woman who has committed her life to lifting others and whose influence I aspire to match. I am not seeking a title or a diploma; I am leaving a legacy.

My family and I have dealt with mental health issues quite a bit, growing up in an African household. Growing up with someone I loved deeply but who had a rough road with severe mental illness was, at times, confusing, painful, and isolating. There were periods of fear, frustration, and helplessness — exacerbated by the fact that no one in our orbit spoke about it. Because of the stigma associated with mental illness, my family often suffered in silence, unsure where to find help. The one time we tried to seek help, we were met with a lack of access to care, long waiting lists, and providers who were not culturally competent. These experiences stayed with me and led me to work in the mental health field. I am now in college studying Human Development with a minor in Psychology to work in counseling psychology. I want to create safe and supportive spaces for individuals and families who are traveling through the mental health landscape — particularly those from communities like my own, where stigma and structural obstacles can keep many people from getting care. For this part of my career, I am looking to play my role in a shift towards having voices in mental health support that are effective, compassionate, culturally sensitive, and affordable. Alongside my family history, I struggled with my mental health during college. Maintaining my dean list status, Human Development Club commitment, and personal responsibilities as a resident assistant while being a part of a counseling and clinical psychology lab has been overwhelming. I realize that my ability to focus, stay organized, and maintain relationships is directly tied to my mental state. I can balance my workload, connect with others, and remain at the top of my game if I am doing well mentally. However, my instincts are to cancel plans, let things slide, and become unmoored from the joys of my life when I feel anxious or stressed out. These experiences have taught me that mental well-being is foundational to everything we do. I’ve created a toolkit to cope with my mental health over time. I use a planner to stay organized, set smaller goals from big tasks, and meditate when overwhelmed. I’ve learned that it’s OK to ask for help—whether from professors, friends, or counselors—and  that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness. These lessons have taught me to become more resilient and continue to hone my desire to help others find their own strength. The other half of the answer lies in my work toward graduate school and someday in a career in counseling psychology, one foot in my memories and the other in my aspirations that I will play a role in one day leading us all into a better, more hopeful tomorrow. I want people to see that you can heal when it feels impossible. I want to be with families like mine, the ones who do not have anyone to listen to them without judgment and help them navigate the journey with kindness. And I want to help contribute to a broader movement of making mental health care more accessible, inclusive, and equitable. That would relieve the financial burden on my education and allow my focus to remain to evolve professionally and academically. Most importantly, it would be an honor to carry on Daniel’s legacy by dedicating my career to the very cause this scholarship supports. Psychology has always fascinated me, primarily because I am curious about how and why people act, react, and think in the ways we do. Nevertheless, what I have learned thus far has allowed me to make a difference in the world, which drives my desire to obtain a psychology degree to help those who do not have access to the help they need. Being a black woman, I have seen the struggles of mental health challenges within BIPOC communities, and the barriers that frequently keep them from receiving the help they so desperately deserve. I hope to help break down walls as a clinical psychologist, delivering effective and culturally attuned practice that normalizes and honors the experiences of traditionally marginalized groups. I am drawn to psychology primarily because it uses knowledge and healing to help other human beings. But for many in the BIPOC community, accessing these interventions has complications rooted in history and systemic challenges, including stigma, economic inequality and a shortage of culturally-informed practitioners. BIPOC psychologists are also underrepresented, and this undermines the trust in the mental health system, which makes it increasingly important for people like me to enter the field and to serve as a bridge for these gaps. BIPOC communities, in particular, experience unique stressors that render access to mental health services a must. Due to the experience of racism, discrimination, and generational trauma, there are higher rates of anxiety, depression, and other psychological distress in these populations. Moreover, cultural norms and stigmatization make it difficult for many people to talk about mental health, causing many to grieve in silence. They play an essential role by providing representation and normalizing mental health discourse among different communities to create environments in which BIPOC individuals can feel secure in seeking help from a psychologist. Trusted culturally competent therapy is an essential aspect in effective treatment for our BIPOC community. Examples of colonizing Western Psychology Traditional psychological practices may not always or directly address structural oppression and identity-specific stressors in the lived lives of people of color. A clinician who understands the cultural context of a given client can build interventions that respect and incorporate an individual’s experiences, making therapy more accessible and practical. Moreover, mental health practitioners can assist significantly in policies to address the disparities in mental health care, ensuring equitable distribution of resources across all communities. A second key component in addressing mental health needs for BIPOC populations is the creation of community-based interventions. For so many, visiting a therapist in a traditional clinic may feel far removed from their lived experience. However, they could still benefit from mental health programs that truly meet them where they are, like peer-led support groups, wellness workshops and outreach programs. These services can serve as a first point of contact for those who might otherwise be deterred from seeking professional help. I was invested in psychology because it is nothing without its social justice and empowerment counterparts. Mental health services should be available to everyone regardless of race and socioeconomic status. My goal for my future career in psychology is to work toward culturally responsive care and hopefully shatter the cycles of trauma that are disproportionately perpetuated against BIPOC communities. I hope to help shape a more inclusive and equitable mental health landscape for future generations through education, representation and care grounded in compassion.

When my mental health is good, I feel more focused, motivated, and able to manage the pressures of academic life. However, when I’m struggling with anxiety or stress, it can affect my ability to concentrate, stay organized, and perform to my full potential. In terms of academics, mental health challenges can make it difficult to stay on top of assignments, prepare for exams, and meet deadlines. During periods of high stress, I often find myself becoming distracted or procrastinating, which only adds to my anxiety. The fear of not performing well can lead to a cycle of overthinking, self-doubt, and burnout. I’ve noticed that when I’m not taking care of my mental health, I’m less productive, and my grades can suffer as a result. On the other hand, when I prioritize my mental wellness, I can better focus on my studies, manage my time effectively, and perform well academically. In my personal life, mental health also plays a significant role. I tend to withdraw from social activities and isolate myself when I feel anxious or overwhelmed. This can strain my relationships with friends and family, as I may become irritable or distant without explaining why. The stress of school can also make it challenging to find time for hobbies or self-care, leading to a sense of imbalance in my life. Conversely, when I’m mentally well, I’m more present in my relationships, better able to communicate, and more likely to engage in activities that bring me joy and relaxation. Recognizing the impact that mental health has on my academic performance and personal life, I take several steps to make my mental health a priority while attending school. 1. Practice Time Management and Set Realistic Goals: One of the best ways to reduce stress is to stay organized and manage my time effectively. I use a planner to break down my assignments into smaller, manageable tasks and set realistic goals for what I can accomplish each day. I reduce overwhelmed feelings and avoid last-minute stress by pacing myself and not overloading my schedule. 2. Seek Support When Needed: I’ve come to understand that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. Whether it’s reaching out to a professor for an extension, talking to a counselor when I’m feeling overwhelmed, or simply confiding in a friend, seeking support helps me manage my mental health more effectively. Having a support system has been crucial in helping me navigate academic and personal challenges. 3. Prioritize Self-Care and Mindfulness: I make time for activities that help me relax and recharge, such as walking, journaling, or practicing mindfulness. These practices help me stay grounded and reduce anxiety, allowing me to approach my work with a more precise, calmer mindset. Additionally, I maintain a healthy sleep schedule, as sleep significantly impacts my mood and energy levels. 4. Set Boundaries and Say No: In college, it’s easy to overcommit to activities, leading to burnout. I’ve learned to set boundaries by saying no when my schedule is full and allowing me to take breaks when needed. By taking these steps to prioritize my mental health, I can better balance my academic responsibilities with my personal life, leading to more tremendous success and overall well-being.

As a college student with a passion for mental health, I can take several actions to create a positive impact within my campus community and beyond. Mental health issues are prevalent among students, yet they are often misunderstood or ignored. I can help raise awareness, support, and advocate for better mental health resources using student platforms. 1. Promote Mental Health Awareness and Reduce Stigma One of the most impactful actions I can take is raising awareness about mental health and reducing the stigma surrounding it. Many students avoid seeking help because they fear judgment or don’t fully understand the importance of mental health. By being vocal about my own experiences with mental health challenges and creating open conversations, I can encourage others to feel more comfortable discussing their struggles. I could organize events such as mental health awareness campaigns, panel discussions, or workshops where students can learn about mental health, share their stories, and access resources. These initiatives could help normalize mental health conversations and create a more supportive environment. 2. Advocate for Accessible Mental Health Resources Many college students face barriers when trying to access mental health resources, such as long wait times for counseling appointments or a lack of culturally sensitive care. I can improve this by advocating for increased funding and resources for mental health services on campus. This could involve collaborating with student government or campus organizations to push for changes, such as hiring more counselors, offering peer support programs, or expanding mental health services to include teletherapy options. By making mental health resources more accessible, students would be more likely to seek help when needed. 3. Create Peer Support Networks Another necessary action I can take is to foster a sense of community through peer support networks. As a student, I am uniquely positioned to relate to the challenges my peers face, whether it’s academic stress, loneliness, or anxiety. I could help create or join a peer support group where students can come together in a safe space to share their feelings, discuss coping strategies, and offer each other encouragement. Beliefs Growing up, I always thought that mental health was something you could “power through.” My family and culture often had an unspoken expectation to be strong and resilient, and I internalized the idea that asking for help was a sign of weakness. When I started experiencing anxiety during high school, I felt ashamed. It manifested as overthinking, sleepless nights, and a constant worry that I wasn’t doing enough. I tried to ignore it, believing it would go away if I worked harder and pushed through. But it didn’t. As the anxiety continued into college, I realized something had to change. My breaking point came during a particularly overwhelming semester, where balancing academics, social life, and personal responsibilities left me feeling drained. It was then that I decided to seek therapy, and that decision transformed my beliefs about mental health. I now believe that mental health is as important as physical health—if not more. It’s not something you can neglect and expect to thrive. Therapy taught me that it’s okay to ask for help and that taking care of your mental health is an act of strength, not weakness. I’ve learned that mental health is an ongoing process, and it’s okay to have bad days. How we respond to those challenges and whether we allow ourselves the space to heal and grow matters. I also believe in the power of vulnerability. Opening up about my struggles with anxiety, even to close friends, felt terrifying at first. But I’ve come to see that vulnerability isn’t something to be feared; it’s the key to deeper connections and authentic living. This belief has become central to how I live my life. Relationships My relationships have been deeply impacted by my experience with mental health. When I first started struggling with anxiety, I kept it hidden, even from those closest to me. I was afraid of burdening others or being seen as weak. But over time, I realized that isolating myself only made things worse. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that the people who genuinely care about you will want to support you, not judge you. Opening up to my family, especially my mother and sisters, was a pivotal moment for me. They offered me the support I didn’t even know I needed—whether it was helping me financially when stressed about work or simply listening to me without judgment. Their unwavering support has strengthened our bond and reminded me that I don’t have to carry my burdens alone. I’ve also become more compassionate in my relationships. Experiencing mental health challenges firsthand has made me more attuned to what others might be going through, even if they’re not showing it. I’ve learned to be a better listener and to create space for others to express their emotions. This has made my friendships more meaningful and deepened my connections with those around me. At the same time, I’ve learned the importance of setting boundaries. In the past, I would often prioritize others’ needs over my own, even if it came at the expense of my mental health. As someone who experienced severe anxiety and panic attacks on the spur of the moment, COVID- 19 was an alarm to my senses. I was left vulnerable to social isolation and disconnectedness, which fueled my anxiety, uncertainty, and loneliness and led to affective and behavioral problems. I was forced to stay home for five months after leaving it at 15. I literally had to endure emotional and mental abuse from the one person supposed to comfort me in my time of need, my mother. My siblings weren't much help either. Years of hiding my mental and emotional abuse, then finally getting away from it only to come back, put me 10 steps behind my life plan. My mental health was meaningless to the people supposed to care. My belief and faith that I could amend the relationship with my family desecrated. COVID- 19 pandemic made me choose a career that would aid me in making a difference for people like me. Children and adolescents in low to middle-class children suffer from mental health because the community they live in doesn't support them and their mental health. Being raised in an environment that lacks any type of natural emotional intelligence is harming enough for a sensitive child, but to add a pandemic on top of that is a person slowly disintegrating. I hated my time at home and couldn't wait to leave either. Living at home again felt like my world was slowly dying, and everything I tried to prevent from happening happened; I hated everyone I lived with. My family was the reason for leaving home to boarding school, and my mother was the reason for my staying in boarding school after a year. Coming back home wasn't healthy for me; to go felt like fresh air finally coming in after being suffocated. COVID tested my willpower and my hope for a more prosperous life. To say you understand a person when they say "I'm in pain" is an understatement." You can't feel the pain of a person that had to fight with everyone they've ever known with the world battling itself. Not only were we in a health crisis, but we were again at social injustice. The people that looked like me were dying in broad daylight by police and racist bigots but were also being killed by an unknown disease we didn't know how to cure. Seeing that every day and fighting with everyone in the house and eventually with yourself takes a toll on your mental health, beliefs, relationships, and humanity. As a young black woman trying to find her way in the world, little steps at a time, while being beaten up by her family and the world, how can she survive without forcing herself into a numb state of mind? I stopped being myself until I got back to boarding school-which wasn't such a healthy place either. Not being yourself was such a sad state for me. Every action was based on survival and protecting myself from everything and everyone, so I won't lose it when I fought for it back. I then realized that I had more strength than I thought I did. I started to build pride because I knew I had a strong backbone and cared for myself so much that I won't allow anyone to steal from me.

As a young black woman in America, it's hard someday to wake up feeling motivated to go out in the word and give it all you got, especially with being in a low, middle-class family on Medicaid and at the bottom of the totem poll. But, coming from a black woman and seeing her raise you is one of the most heartbreaking and inspiring things because my mother always taught me to be strong and never take anybodys' attitude; to always feel empowered and strong no matter what. Adversity is a complex and often challenging experience that can take many forms, and it can be especially challenging for a black girl growing up in a middle-class family. However, despite the challenges that may come my way, many strategies and approaches can help me overcome adversity and succeed in life. Seeking support from loved ones like my mother and sisters. One of the most important ways to overcome adversity is to have a robust support system of loved ones who can offer emotional and practical support. A black girl in a middle-class family, such as myself, may find it helpful to turn to trusted family members or friends for help and guidance during difficult times. Set goals and work towards them: Having clear goals can provide a sense of purpose and direction, and working towards those goals can help me stay focused and motivated, even when faced with adversity. In addition, setting small, achievable goals can help me build momentum and confidence, and I find it helpful to celebrate each destination as I reach it. Choosing the road to aid my community in mental healthcare was always the end goal. People from marginalized groups, including Black women, may be less likely to seek mental health treatment due to various barriers. These barriers can include stigma surrounding mental health treatment, a lack of access to care, and a lack of representation among mental health professionals. As a result, having therapists who are members of marginalized groups may help to reduce these barriers and make therapy more accessible and welcoming to clients who share those identities. Being able to be the person to be a part of the change so the next generation can have the advantage many before couldn't have is the motivation. Having therapists who are members of the same marginalized group as their clients can also create a sense of cultural congruence and understanding, which can be essential for building trust and rapport in the therapy relationship. This can be especially important for clients who have had negative experiences with therapy or have had experiences of marginalization in other areas of their lives. Returning to my community to pass the knowledge to help the people puts the battery in my back to pursue a degree in psychology. In addition, research has shown that therapists who are members of marginalized groups may be more likely to understand their client's unique challenges and strengths deeply. This can allow them to provide more culturally responsive and affirming care, which can be particularly beneficial for clients who have experienced trauma related to their marginalized identities. While being a black woman therapist is certainly not required for effective treatment, it can bring valuable perspectives and experiences to the therapy process that can benefit both the therapist and their clients. Psychology is considered a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field because it is based on scientific research and the systematic study of behavior and mental processes. Psychologists use the scientific method to design and conduct experiments, collect and analyze data, and draw evidence-based conclusions about the relationships between the mind and behavior. Like other STEM fields, psychology involves applying mathematical and statistical techniques to analyze data and test hypotheses. Psychologists also use technology, such as computer programs and online databases, to collect, store, and analyze data. In addition, psychological research findings often have practical applications in fields such as education, health care, and business, making psychology a valuable contributor to the STEM fields. Becoming a STEM major is a long and challenging road, but it's all worth it if I can be the change I want to see in the black and brown community.
