My mom has been the biggest influence in my life. She has always been there for my sibling and me. Since she was 12, she was not allowed to go to school. She convinced her father to let her work because they could barely afford food. She got a job at a clothes-making company where she learned the basics of sewing. When we moved to America, she bought a sewing machine to make some extra money alongside her full-time job at a laundromat. Due to blind luck, she ran into a tailor who was willing to teach my mom everything about the craft and even sell her all the machines she needed. Now, she is a professional seamstress; she works for 3 separate businesses and her clients. Even with her busy schedule she always had time for her family. She encourages us to pursue education since she had to give it up so young. Her ability to persevere through anything life gives her has inspired me to keep on going. She is the most caring person I have met. Her heart is so full of love for her family, friends, and community. We always participated in as many fundraisers as we could. If we couldn't we would support and promote it. My mom's love for people inspires me to help as well.
When I graduate, I want to create a safe space for children to express their creativity. I want to teach them to use different mediums and explore their styles. I will be an elementary and middle school art teacher. Especially since I know little me would have loved some creative freedom in her life. The only time I have actually done anything creative would have been in art class with heavy guidelines leaving little room for self-expression. I want to give children that creative freedom that I didn't get.
My artistic skill is versatile. I mainly deal in abstract, geometric drawings and paintings. I love to work with shapes and bold color schemes. While I mainly work in abstract, I also love crafts. I make small sculptures or use beads to make jewelry. I also love learning new skills, such as knitting, playing guitar, and whittling wood to name a few. I am willing to try anything at least once. Learning to do something gives me such delight; especially so if I do it well enough to teach others to do it. I have already taught friends, and an after-school club an easy art project anyone can do. Art has a stigma on every piece having to be a masterpiece or perfect. Most people don't want to pick this hobby up because of that stigma. I want to teach so people can embrace what art should be. Art doesn't need to be just for artists. I want to help every student find their creative outlet.
