Hello my name is Fatima Romero. I am eighteen years old and I am a proud type on diabetic. I am currently attending Mt. San Antonio college in Walnut, California where I am an American Sign Language Interpretation major. My goal is to graduate from the Sign Language Interpretation program at Mt. Sac, and then transfer to a private institution known as Southern California's School For Interpretation, in which I plan to get a certification in medical interpretation both in Spanish and American Sign Language. My aim is to be able to interpret for families in various medical settings. I am a daughter of two Mexican immigrants. Therefore my primary language is Spanish. Because of my language background I know first hand what its like to go in and out of doctors appointments, with an interpreter by my side to ensure proper comprehension for both myself and those in my support system. My diagnosis has made me a strong believer of the words "knowledge is power." The idea of becoming a bridge in the language barrier for people has been the driving force behind my career. I believe everyone deserves equal access to clear information, and I strive to be a leader in this field. I target people from Hispanic backgrounds by interpreting in the Spanish. In addition, I aim to represent the Deaf community, since like diabetics, they have consistently been marginalized as disabled and handicapped. My belief is that this is far from true. Therefore, I am educating myself not only in ASL but on Deaf culture to be of representation to this community as a skilled interpreter.
