Black girl Magic/Black excellence to me is seeing black women taking of spaces they have never before. Seeing black women represented in STEM and other fields. I am working on my nursing degree to inspire the next generation of back girls. I have always found the health care works inspiring and looked up to them. Five years ago, my mom was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I remember accompanying her to doctor appointments to translate without understanding a word. It was a frustrating and scary experience for both of us. I also have a younger sister who has Spina Bifida. She spent the first six months of her life in the NICU. I remember visiting her at the hospital and thinking that all the nurses and doctors spoke a foreign language. They took excellent care of my sister and mother during those difficult months. The nurses I have come in contact with have been able to help people in their most vulnerable and unexpected moments. One major issue was the language barrier, and I hope that I can bridge that gap for my patients. Beyond the frustration, every single nurse we had come in contact with at that time was fantastic. They inspired me to look into nursing and jump-started my passion for helping people. They made me realize that the little things matter and that treating people with kindness and respect goes a long way. Another aspect of nursing that I love is the numerous career paths available within the profession. With all the craziness happening in the world, I can look at the bigger picture and focus on why I choose this profession. My nursing instructors have inspired me to look into being a nursing educator. I, too, hope to inspire a new generation of nurses.
