      Milan Alexander Memorial Scholarship
From a young age, i have been driven by the desire to understand and address global challenges. Growing up, i witnessed firsthand the disparities that exist between different communities and nations, sparking a commitment to contribute to a more equitable world. This scholarship is not just about financial assistance; it is an investment in my potential to make a tangible difference on both a global and local scale. My passion for international affairs has led me to set ambitious goals. I envision myself working with the United Nations, contributing to policy development and implementation in areas such as human rights, sustainable development, or humanitarian aid. The UN’s multifaceted approach to global problem solving resonates deeply with me, and I believe my skills and dedication would allow me to be a valuable asset to the organisation. My experience as Vice President of my university’s UNA-USA chapter has further solidified this aspiration. This fall, we are planning initiatives to support local refugees and women’s centre's, while raising awareness about the UN sustainable development goals within our community. These experiences have provided me with practical skills in advocacy, project management, and community engagement, all of which are essential for a successful career in international affairs. Beyond my ambitions on the global stage, i have a deep-rooted commitment to giving back to my community in The Gambia. I plan to return to my home country and establish a non-governmental organisation (NGO) focused on addressing the specific needs of the community. This NGO would prioritise initiatives in education, healthcare, and economic empowerment, aiming to create sustainable solutions that uplift individuals and families. Agriculture is a crucial sector in The Gambia, employing a significant portion of the population, yet it faces numerous challenges, including climate change, limited access to technology in certain areas of the country, and inadequate infrastructure. My vision is to empower local communities to become self sufficient and resilient, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their development. This scholarship would enable me to fully dedicate myself to my studies and extracurricular activities, allowing me to gain the knowledge, skills, and networks necessary to achieve my goals. It would alleviate the financial burden of my bachelors degree, freeing me to focus on academic excellence and leadership development. Ultimately, this scholarship would be a catalyst for my journey to becoming a global citizen who contributes to positive change, both internationally and within my own community.
