I am currently in my first year at Drexel University as an aspiring biomedical engineer. After completing my undergraduate degree, I plan to go on to medical school and become a doctor. As both a biomedical engineer and physician, I will strive to make long-term mental health treatment more affordable and accessible to anyone who needs support.   Growing up as the child of a single mother and uncles who struggle with schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder, I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges associated with current medication delivery protocols. Most patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder require the daily use of antipsychotic drugs; however, due to their fluctuating mental status, they often either skip out on taking their medication or take too many pills at once. I know the frustration this system puts families through, as I found myself time after time worrying about the safety of my loved ones. I hope to reform the system by using new drug delivery technologies to dose patients in need of antipsychotics safely. Long-acting injections are not commonly used in routine outpatient treatment. They face significant cost barriers, often exceeding $3,000 per dose for patients.   Making affordable and accessible controlled drug delivery systems for all antipsychotic drugs will not only ensure safe dosages for patients but will also strengthen patient compliance and ultimately work towards a trusted relationship between the mental health system and those in need. Continuing my education and commitment to research, I'm optimistic that I will turn this vision into a reality.
