My life goal is to become a orthopedic physician. I have multiple family members that suffer from bone related problems. On my journey to become a doctor I will be learning new ways to help not only my family but other people that suffer from the same thing. Additionally, orthopedic surgeons have the lowest percentage of African American women. When I accomplish my goal it will show other young African American females that they are smart and can accomplish anything they put their mind to.

Growing up as the child of a teen parent has had a big impact on my goals and dreams. It has taught me about resilience, determination, and empathy. Seeing my parent's struggles and successes has inspired me to work hard, help others, and make a positive difference in the world.
My parent faced many challenges, balancing the responsibilities of parenthood with school and work. Despite these obstacles, they showed incredible strength and perseverance, always striving to provide a stable and loving environment for me. Their journey taught me the value of hard work, the importance of education, and the power of resilience. These lessons have become the foundation of my personal and professional goals.
One of the most important things I learned from being the child of a teen parent is the value of education. My parent always encouraged me to do well in school and follow my dreams, even when it was tough. This support motivated me to excel academically and led me to pursue a degree in biology at Houston Christian University. I am determined to use my education to create a better future for myself and make a positive impact on society.
Seeing the sacrifices my parent made has also given me a strong sense of empathy and a desire to help others facing similar challenges. Their experience inspired me to pursue a career in healthcare, where I can make a real difference in people's lives. I am especially passionate about orthopedics, a field that combines my interest in biology with my commitment to improving the quality of life for others. My goal is to become a physician assistant specializing in orthopedics, providing compassionate care and support to patients, just as my parent did for me.
Being the child of a teen parent has profoundly shaped my goals and aspirations. The resilience, determination, and empathy I have developed from witnessing my parent’s journey have driven me to pursue a career in healthcare, where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I am very appreciative to my parents for working hard to pursue their dreams while also taking care of me and my siblings. My experiences have also reinforced the importance of education, community support, and giving back, all of which are central to my personal and professional aspirations. Through my work, I aim to honor the sacrifices my parent made and inspire others to pursue their dreams, no matter the challenges they face.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
My name is Faith Skelton, and I am a biology student at Houston Christian University. I have a strong passion for orthopedics, which stems from seeing my family members deal with bone-related problems. Through my volunteer work at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital and my church's youth ministry, I have learned the importance of helping others and making a difference in my community. Additionally, my job at Meekographics, where I create fundraising videos for non-profit organizations, has taught me valuable communication skills that I plan to use in my future career. I am committed to improving orthopedic health and educating others about preventive care.
Choosing a field of interest is often influenced by personal experiences, aspirations, and the desire to make a meaningful impact. For me, the choice to pursue a career in orthopedics was significantly shaped by several factors, each deeply rooted in my personal life and professional goals.
Growing up, I witnessed multiple family members struggle with bone-related issues. Observing their challenges and the impact on their quality of life ignited a profound interest in understanding the human musculoskeletal system. This curiosity was further nurtured by my academic journey at Houston Christian University, where I am pursuing a degree in biology. The intricate mechanisms of the body, particularly how bones heal and regenerate, captivated me and solidified my decision to specialize in orthopedics.
My work at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital as a volunteer has been instrumental in shaping my career path. Engaging directly with patients and healthcare professionals provided firsthand insight into the significant role orthopedics plays in enhancing patient mobility and overall well-being. Additionally, my volunteering experience at my church's youth ministry taught me the importance of community support and education in promoting health and well-being. These experiences have inspired me to aspire towards becoming a physician assistant with a specialization in orthopedics, combining my passion for healthcare with my desire to serve and educate the community.
One of my personal goals is to leverage my knowledge and skills to create a lasting impact on patient care and education. I aim to develop community outreach programs focused on preventive care and orthopedic health, particularly targeting populations at risk of bone-related conditions. My role at Meekographics, where I create fundraising videos for non-profit organizations, has equipped me with valuable communication skills. I plan to use these skills to raise awareness and mobilize support for orthopedic health initiatives, educating the community about preventive measures and the importance of early intervention.
My choice to pursue a career in orthopedics is a culmination of personal experiences, academic pursuits, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact in healthcare. My professional goals include creating community outreach programs and raising awareness about orthopedic health, using the skills and knowledge I have gained throughout my journey. By combining my passion for healthcare with my dedication to community service, I am committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those I serve.
Powering The Future - Whiddon Memorial Scholarship
Throughout my life, I have faced numerous challenges that have tested my resilience and shaped my educational journey. My family has grappled with multiple bone-related health issues, which has significantly influenced my path. Witnessing their struggles and the impact of proper medical care has driven my passion for pursuing a career in orthopedics.
One major adversity I have had to overcome is balancing the demands of my education with the need to support my family. As a student at Houston Christian University, I have juggled rigorous coursework with volunteer commitments at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital and youth ministry at my church. Additionally, I work at Meekographics, where I create fundraising videos for non-profit organizations like Literacy Now and Catholic Charities. These responsibilities have taught me the importance of time management, perseverance, and community service.
Adding to this challenge is the financial strain of living with a single parent. My mother has worked tirelessly to provide for our family, but the costs of education, healthcare, and daily living have often been overwhelming. I have taken on part-time jobs and sought scholarships and grants to alleviate some of this burden. This financial pressure has required me to contribute significantly to our household, further complicating my efforts to maintain a strong academic record.
Despite these challenges, I have remained steadfast in my academic pursuits. My passion for STEM, particularly in the field of orthopedics, is rooted in my desire to make a substantial difference in people’s lives. I am fascinated by the human body’s complexity and the potential to improve patients’ quality of life through innovative medical treatments. My goal is to attend physician assistant school and specialize in orthopedics, where I can directly contribute to patient care and health education.
Financially, pursuing higher education has been a significant challenge. As I enter my fifth year at Houston Christian University, the financial strain has only increased. This scholarship would provide crucial support, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on financial stress. It would enable me to complete my degree and take the next steps toward my goal of becoming a physician assistant.

JJ Savaunt's Women In STEM Scholarship
Belief in a Creator who designed heaven and earth is a personal conviction for me. I see evidence of His intricate design in the world around me, from the complexity of the human body to the vastness of the universe. Several experiences during my studies have solidified my belief in God and His intentional design.
During my biology studies, I have spent countless hours looking through a microscope, observing the details of cells and tissues. Every time I saw the tiny structures within a cell, I was struck by their complexity and precision. The way each part functioned harmoniously to sustain life was nothing short of miraculous. This microscopic world, hidden from the naked eye, revealed a level of detail and organization that spoke to me of an intelligent design far beyond human capability. The beauty and complexity of even the smallest components of life left me in awe, reinforcing my belief that such complexness must have a divine origin.
Additionally, during lectures, as I learned about the various systems of the human body, my awe only deepened. Hearing about how the heart pumps blood through miles of blood vessels, how the brain processes extensive amounts of information, and how the immune system defends against countless pathogens, I couldn’t help but marvel at the sophistication and efficiency of these processes. Each system, each organ, and each cell seemed to be part of a masterful blueprint, designed to work together in perfect unity.
Despite our advancements in science and technology, we as humans barely scratch the surface of understanding the complexities of these systems. The more we discover, the more we realize how much there is yet to uncover. This sentiment is beautifully captured in the scripture, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse” (Romans 1:20, NIV). This verse resonates with me because it encapsulates the idea that the natural world, with all its intricacies and wonders, points to the existence of a Creator. It suggests that by studying and appreciating creation, we can gain insights into God’s eternal power and divine nature.
Observing the microscopic world and learning about the human body, have all strengthened my belief in God. They have shown me that science and faith are not mutually exclusive but rather complement each other, revealing the grandeur of creation and the Creator. The complexity and order evident in the natural world are, to me, undeniable signs of divine design.

Black Leaders Scholarship
During the month of Black History Month, I am particularly inspired by the remarkable story of Katherine Johnson, whose pioneering work at NASA shattered barriers and paved the way for future generations of scientists, mathematicians, and women of color. As portrayed in the film "Hidden Figures," Katherine's journey was marked by resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Growing up in the south with segregation, Katherine dealt with numerous obstacles due to her race and gender. Despite the discriminatory practices of the time, she remained undeterred in her pursuit of knowledge and excellence. Her exceptional mathematical abilities were evident from a young age, and she pursued higher education despite the limited opportunities available to Black students.
Upon joining NASA's Langley Research Center, Katherine quickly distinguished herself as a brilliant mathematician. She played a pivotal role in critical space missions, including John Glenn's historic orbit around the Earth. Katherine's meticulous calculations were instrumental in ensuring the safety and success of these missions, earning her the respect and admiration of her colleagues.
What sets Katherine apart as a leader is not just her technical prowess, but also her resilience in the face of adversity. Despite the barriers imposed by segregation and gender discrimination, she remained focused on her work and never allowed prejudice to define her capabilities. Her perseverance and determination serve as a powerful example for all those who face obstacles on their path to success.
Katherine's story reminds me of the importance of representation and diversity in the STEM fields. As a woman of color pursuing a career in science, her achievements resonate deeply with me. Her trailblazing efforts opened doors for countless individuals who followed in her footsteps, myself included.

It illuminated the profound impact consistent assistance can have on empowering vulnerable groups, reaffirming my dedication to this cause.
During my time at both the women’s shelter and hospital, I gained a deep understanding of the persistent challenges faced by individuals in transitional situations. It became evident that many people encounter a lack of ongoing support beyond immediate assistance, leaving them vulnerable. This realization inspired me to envision a dedicated program aimed at providing sustained aid, ensuring continuous support for those navigating transitional periods in their lives.
My goal is to develop a comprehensive initiative that addresses various facets of support for families in transition. This initiative will include educational resources, mentorship programs, job training opportunities, mental health support services, and literacy enhancement activities, all specifically tailored to meet the unique needs of these families. Through collaboration with local organizations and volunteers, I intend to create a sustainable framework that empowers individuals to navigate and overcome the challenges they face during transitional periods in their lives.

Through this initiative, I aspire to make meaningful, long-lasting contributions to our community, fostering a brighter future for those in transition.
I strongly believe that education and unwavering support are pivotal in breaking the cycles of adversity. This envisioned program symbolizes my unwavering commitment to uplift and empower individuals striving for stability amid life’s changes. By providing education and continuous support, I aim to not only assist individuals in their transitional phases but also equip them with the tools to break free from challenging cycles, fostering lasting empowerment and positive change within our community.
Girls Ready to Empower Girls
Throughout my educational years, my mother has been the steady anchor steering me through the waves of uncertainty. Her unwavering support has been a guiding light, illuminating the path through academic challenges and moments of self-doubt.
Her encouraging words have been my shield during times of insecurity or whenever doubts cloud my aspirations, she continuously stands by me, affirming, “You can achieve whatever you set your mind to.” Her belief in my potential has been a constant source of strength, helping me rise above uncertainties and strive for excellence.
I shared my desire to pursue a double major she advocated my ambition with unwavering support from the outset. Her confidence in my ability to excel in two fields simultaneously became the bedrock of my determination.
What struck me most was her tenacity despite not having completed her college degree initially. Life’s responsibilities as a mother to my brother, then to me, and later my sister took precedence over her own educational aspirations. Yet, her passion for learning remained unquenched.
Years later, she seized the opportunity to resume her academic journey, determined to attain her associate degree. Her decision to return to education, balancing coursework with familial responsibilities, was nothing short of inspiring. It illustrated the resilience and unyielding dedication she possesses.
Her journey was a testament to resilience—an unwavering dedication to personal growth and self-improvement. Life might have placed hurdles in her path, but she approached each obstacle with unwavering resolve, transforming challenges into opportunities for growth. Through her example, I learned that the pursuit of knowledge is not restricted by timelines or external pressures; instead, it’s an ongoing journey to expand one’s horizons and foster personal development.
Her guidance has been the catalyst for my achievements. Without her, I would not be where I stand today. Her belief in me pushed my aspirations, providing the bedrock upon which I built my successes. Her pivotal role in my life is irreplaceable, shaping the person I’ve become.
When I reflect on how much she’s supported me, I often feel like God put her in my life on purpose. Her constant presence, encouragement, and belief in me feel like more than just a mom’s love—they’re like God guiding me through school and my dreams. Maybe God made her my mom so I could find my purpose. Her guidance and support have matched perfectly with where I’m headed, nudging me toward the path I know I’m meant to take.

I am driven to become a medical doctor by my passionate desire to make a meaningful impact on many lives by providing care and understanding to those who are suffering, particularly in the orthopedic department. My motivation springs from the health issues my family faced, specifically bone and musculoskeletal health-related. These personal experiences have instilled in me a steadfast commitment to improving the well-being of individuals who have encountered these or similar health conditions.
However, the path to becoming a medical doctor has not been without its challenges, one of the most significant being financial circumstances. The cost of education can be substantial and has posed a considerable obstacle for me and my family. Especially during these times when prices have increased substantially. Being an 'up-stander' involves embodying values such as courage, compassion, and unwavering conviction to stand up for what is right, even when facing challenges. Similar to Mohamed Magdi Taha, I have come to understand the power of using my voice and actions to advocate for change and build a stronger community.
Throughout my journey of advancing the spirit of giving, I have consistently taken a stand by actively participating in various initiatives that contribute to positive change. From my involvement with the Red Cross to joining a volunteer program at a local hospital, I have demonstrated my commitment to making a difference. Moreover, I acknowledge the influential role that storytelling plays in forging connections and propelling change. Through various avenues such as blogging, social media platforms, or public speaking engagements, my intention is to share personal anecdotes, experiences, and lessons learned from my journey in the realm of giving. By opening up about challenges faced and victories achieved, I hope to establish a deeper connection with individuals and motivate them to take positive strides in their own lives.
Additionally, I envision collaborating with local educational institutions to lay the foundation for mentorship programs that equip young minds with the tools to become effective 'up-standers.' Overcoming adversity has been an integral part of my journey in advancing the spirit of giving. From the early days of volunteering as a high school student to my commitment with the Red Cross during college, I've encountered challenges that have tested my resolve and strengthened my determination.
One significant instance of overcoming adversity was when I first joined the youth volunteer group in high school. As a young and inexperienced volunteer, I initially struggled to navigate the complexities of community service projects. However, with the guidance of mentors and the support of fellow volunteers, I persevered. This experience taught me the importance of seeking help when needed and embracing a growth mindset in the face of challenges.
Similarly, during my college years, juggling the demands of academics and active participation in the Red Cross was a daunting task. The pressure of maintaining high grades while being fully engaged in impactful projects often felt overwhelming. Yet, I managed to strike a balance through effective time management, prioritization, and seeking support from friends and family. This period of my life underscored the significance of resilience and adaptability in the pursuit of my goals.
Looking ahead, I am eager to continue contributing to my community by fostering a culture of empathy and active involvement. Building on my experiences with the Red Cross, Meekographics, and the hospital volunteer program, I aspire to initiate educational workshops and campaigns that raise awareness about the importance of giving back. By sharing my journey and lessons learned, I hope to inspire others, especially young individuals, to embrace challenges and discover the transformative power of service.
In the future, I also envision collaborating with local schools to establish mentorship programs that empower students to overcome adversity and develop essential life skills. Recognizing the impact of mentorship in my own journey, I am committed to providing guidance and support to young minds as they navigate challenges and pursue their aspirations.
Moreover, I plan to leverage technology and social media to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and spotlight grassroots initiatives. By using platforms effectively, I aim to create a broader network of individuals dedicated to making positive change and supporting those in need.
Ultimately, I believe that overcoming adversity is not only a personal journey but also a way to connect with others on a deeper level. By sharing our stories of struggle and triumph, we create a sense of solidarity and inspire others to persevere in their own challenges. Through my continued efforts in giving back and serving my community, I hope to be a source of inspiration, resilience, and positive change for years to come.
