Women in Nursing Scholarship
There are many reasons why I want to become a nurse, but ultimately, my decision to pursue nursing was rooted in my desire to directly and meaningfully impact people's lives. I've admired those who took on hands-on responsibilities from a young age, and I always knew I wanted to follow in their footsteps. Nursing perfectly blends my love for the sciences with my commitment to helping others and bettering humankind.
Growing up in a generous household, I learned the importance of giving back. Although my family faced financial struggles and many challenges as I grew up, my mother, as a single parent, always found a way to contribute to our community. She taught me the value of humility and how, even in tough times, there's always light in the darkness. I hope to bring this light to my future patients, providing hope and positivity for those dealing with health challenges.
During my junior and senior years of high school, I enrolled in a career pathways program that allowed me to take courses toward becoming a medical assistant. This program and advanced science courses deepened my understanding of the healthcare system and the human body. These experiences have only strengthened my resolve to pursue nursing.
Community service participation has also enhanced my communication skills and prepared me for a service-oriented career. Volunteering with my church and local nonprofits has shown me the importance of helping others and being part of something bigger than myself. These experiences have laid a strong foundation for my nursing future and provided moral and practical guidance.
I chose nursing not only because of its potential to make a positive impact but also because of the financial stability it can provide. Growing up, I witnessed the struggles of economic instability and yearned for a career that offered fulfillment and security. As a nurse, I can continuously learn and adapt to my patients' needs while applying my passion for the sciences.
Ultimately, I aspire to become a nurse anesthetist, where I would play a key role in the success of my patients' medical procedures. This career path excites me because it allows me to collaborate closely with a team to achieve the best patient outcomes.
Nursing aligns perfectly with my passions, skills, and aspirations. It offers a fulfilling career where I can make a meaningful difference in people's lives while securing a stable future for myself. Through nursing, I hope to continue the legacy of generosity and resilience that my mother has instilled in me.
Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship
My journey is characterized by determination and ambition, much like the incredible legacy of Kalia D. Davis. After high school, I plan to attend a four-year university to major in nursing and obtain my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), a crucial step toward my goal of becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).
Kalia's resilience and drive are qualities I believe I embody. Growing up in a single-parent household with a mother who faced clinical depression, I found inspiration in her unwavering determination. Her battles with financial struggles and mental health challenges taught me the importance of perseverance. Like Kalia, who was a high school athlete, I also found solace and strength in sports. As a Track and Field athlete specializing in shotput and discus, I've learned discipline and perseverance while building a strong sense of community with my teammates.
Attending schools where I was often the minority presented its challenges. I experienced discrimination and felt the weight of being different from my peers. However, these experiences taught me the importance of self-acceptance and the value of diversity. Similar to how Kalia excelled academically and socially in a diverse environment, I have achieved a 3.9 GPA unweighted GPA (4.7 weighted). Kalia’s involvement in the Black Student Union mirrors mine, and I have been actively promoting inclusivity and cultural awareness through founding the STEP team and participating in various honor societies.
These challenges have shaped me into a resilient and empathetic individual, fueling my decision to pursue nursing. Upon earning my BSN degree, my next objective will be to pass the NCLEX exam to become a Registered Nurse (RN). I plan to start my nursing career in the intensive care unit (ICU), gaining valuable hands-on experience. After a few years as an ICU nurse, I aim to enroll in a CRNA program, much like Kalia planned to join the military through ROTC. I can imagine that a heart of service was at her core. For me, completing this program and obtaining licensure will allow me to work as a CRNA, positively impacting patients' lives during medical procedures.
Growing up in a household that values generosity, I have always understood the importance of giving back. From early involvement with the Kids HOPE Project to fundraising for Learning To Emerge Inc., I've been committed to helping others locally and globally. My church and community service efforts, such as distributing food and clothes to the homeless in D.C. and planting trees with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, have reinforced my dedication to making a positive impact. Community service has nurtured my empathy and dedication, and I am determined to continue these efforts.
Kalia's impeccable work ethic and kindness are qualities I admire and continue to work towards. This scholarship, honoring her memory and legacy, will support my education and career goals, ultimately enabling me to give back to the community more meaningfully. Like Kalia, I strive to excel in every aspect of my life and positively impact those around me.
