My absolute favorite phenomenon and the reason I want to continue this path of performance is the community, comradery and change, the power theatre has to bring to millions of people. I hope to be involved in the productions that bring growth and change to our current society and to make people become aware of current situations. I love how from the start, theatre was inherently controversial as it stirred wider audiences to look at themselves and to seek the good and be aware of the potential evil. I also hope to be involved in original works that are able to reach an audience and make them listen to current-world issues. I take inspiration from Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim and their ability to have produced riveting works that broke barriers.
The moment solidified to make theatre my life's dream was the summer after 8th grade where I had the opportunity to see the Broadway production of Be More Chill. Odd choice, I know, but at the time I felt seen and heard through the story of Be More Chill. Through the show, I able to find a community of like minded people who just wanted to escape and experience art together. I felt an overwhelming sense of excitement, joy, and belonging when the lights came up after the pre-show, it was in that moment I realized I wanted to be a part of bringing joy and change into peoples' lives as that show did to mine. After this career defining event, I had another moment that reassured me I was on the right path. Last year I was able to see LA's production of Old Friends. During the show Lea Salonga was singing Everything's Coming of Roses from 'Gypsy'. Right as she sang "everything's coming up roses for me and for you" we locked eyes and an overwhelming sense of assurance and motivation coursed through me. It was like she was saying from one Asian woman who's navigated the world of musical theatre to another Asian woman who is just starting her journey, we will get our roses and overcome to be able to do what we love.
My favorite role I had played so far is Little Becky Two-Shoes from Urinetown. I loved the music, the craziness of my character, as well as the satirical nature of the show that well reflects America still to this day. My dream role is to play all the roles Bernadette Peters and Patti Lupone has played as well as work my way through Hadestown and Sondheim. My ideal track for Hadestown is to start as an ensemble/swing and to eventually become a fate or I am able to play Eurydice while I am still young and as I get older I would be able to have my own take on Persephone and Hermes. I also would love to be a part of thought-provoking productions such as Hair or Cabaret.
