American Dream Scholarship
I never imagined that the night in December would be the last time I saw my country and its beautiful landscapes, my loving family, and most importantly, my dad. My mom never told me that that the reason we came to this country was to seek new opportunities and a better future for my siblings and me. I believed we were simply visiting family. Now, more than four years have passed since that night.
The definition of the American Dream varies for many people, is shaped by their struggles and life experiences. For me, the American Dream feels like a distant goal, especially as an undocumented immigrant. Pursuing a career is challenging when so many opportunities require legal documentation. Employment, for instance, is a key aspect of the American Dream, yet nearly every employer and company requires a Social Security Number. Watching my friends secure jobs, earn money, and enjoy the benefits of their hard work reminds me daily of the barriers I face. Similarly, achieving a professional career has always been a dream of mine. Since childhood, I have aspired to become a veterinarian but knowing that my immigration status prevents me from pursuing this path breaks my inner child. Another passion of mine has been to become a neonatal nurse, yet that, too, remains out of reach due to the same legal limitations.
Beyond a career, the American Dream also represents a stable and happy life for me and my family. While being an immigrant does not make this impossible, it certainly makes it more difficult. My mother works and struggles every day to provide for us, ensuring that we have food on the table and feel safe. However, the constant fear we experience when stepping outside, knowing that we lack legal identification as citizens adds to the challenges we face. Despite these struggles, I try to keep my head up and hope for the best every day. I want to give myself a good future and, while I’m on the path of early graduation so I can get started with college education, I also get good grades and maintain a good GPA. Additionally, I am passionate about volunteering and helping others, regardless of whether I receive anything in return, because I recognize that everyone faces unseen struggles.
After high school, I plan to attend community college, as it is my only viable path to higher education. I intend to study pharmacology, a field that aligns with my passion for science. However, I am aware of the financial burden that comes with pursuing higher education, including the cost of books and additional materials. Receiving this scholarship would be a really big help in being able to afford some of these financial pressures. It would allow me to cover some of my educational expenses independently, easing the burden on my mom. Knowing that I can take this step toward my future without adding to her struggles gives me hope and motivation to continue striving for my dreams.
