Almost every week, I wake up crying, Depressed over the fact that the other half of my family is living in hell. I wasn’t born in this country. I was born in Haiti where I spent most of my childhood in an orphanage. Me and two of my brothers got adopted by a family here, however, that meant leaving our other siblings back in Haiti. Coming here everything felt so new, fresh, and exciting, however, as time went on I started to feel depressed over the fact that my friends and family back at home are experiencing a completely different reality. Discouraged over my country’s circumstances, I started to do more research on the causes for the struggles of my people. As I learned more about my country, I realized that the root cause of all the heartache of the people in Haiti is cause by the government, how they are treating the people, and running the country. As I compare the U.S. and Haiti I realized that unlike the U.S., Haiti does not have laws implanted to protect its citizens against tyranny of the government. Realizing this fact, helped me in choosing to major and political science which will give me the background in politics that I need in order to implant what I have learned about what makes the U.S. a success and apply to Haiti.
