One thing about me is that I'm a very passionate person. I've always had strong interests and pick up on lots of hands-on hobbies such as, sewing, baking, cooking, haircutting, and much more! A lifetime goal of mine is to follow my passion and secure a career in the media industry, whether it's in front or behind the scenes. As a first-generation student, I want to graduate and one day buy a home! :)

Raymond W. Walsh Video Production Scholarship
I used to want to be a YouTuber as a kid. My name is Evelyn Rivas, a first gen student at Virginia Commonwealth University. From a very young age, I was interested in everything video production. It began with being introduced to WeVideo in elementary, Capcut and other mobile editing services in middle school, and Adobe Premiere in high school. I experimented a lot growing up from making vlogs, gaming videos, tutorials, stop motion animation and much more. It wasn't until I reached high school where I realized I could make a career out of my passion.
For all my four years of high school, I took an elective called TV/Media Production. I thank my former teacher Ms. Vilma Zefran, for nurturing my passion and encouraging me to work harder and go further. Thanks to her, I had the opportunity to have a student job for my last two years of high school with Alexandria City Public Schools as a student video producer. Through that opportunity, I developed many skills such as communicating with clients, setting up a live video shoot, operating switchers, video editing, and much more.
In those four years, in a classroom and studio meeting. I learned how to operate and set up handheld cameras, studio cameras, how to set up audio and control it, the process of pre-production, production, and post-production. I learned how to work as a team and support one another. I also learned scriptwriting and how to host as an anchor which led me to host the school show for a few years and entering a competition as an anchor.
I am very passionate on all the aspects of media production, I enjoy and am always willing to learn more. I would love to learn at least base level knowledge of everything. Personally, I would love to strengthen my skills in video editing or camera operating. For video editing, I am quite familiar with adobe premiere but each time I learn about new tools and features. As well as not only that, but there's also much more to video editing. I want to learn more about all the possibilities and tools on after effects to optimize my skills and widen my opportunities. As for camera operating, I would love to learn all the possibilities of different shots and emotions one can give a scene purely on raw footage.
Currently, the way I am working towards my goal is I am studying Mass Communication with a concertation in Media Production. This past spring semester 2026, I've completed my first year at Virginia Commonwealth University. This scholarship will greatly benefit me in continuing to further my education as well as relieving financial burden. Therefore, allowing me to focus on academics and outside media production experiences. Whether it's personal projects or an internship. It will allow me to take another step further into the media production industry.
