Bio

Hi! I'm Evelyn! :) I'm a student at Merced Community College studying for my Chemistry degree and planning on becoming a biomedical engineer at some point. I love to help people in any way I can and something about making pills or prosthetics seems so cool to me. I used to want to be a lawyer or counselor for children in juvenile detention centers but I realized I wanted to be more hands-on which is why I'm studying Chemistry now. I also love to design things so being able to design prosthetics to be more fashionable or fun to have is something I look forward to!

So, fun fact I'm not exactly the age you guys are looking for but I'm a Mexican Woman and interested in tech too, so why not? Hehe, hi! I'm Evelyn and I'm interested in biomedical engineering. It's a pretty cool pathway if I say so myself, especially considering that they are some of the most overlooked yet necessary people we need. Biomedical engineers work to improve human health using technology, and I love the idea of that. Something that I want to help solve is paralysis in a way that can be bionic. I know solving paralysis itself is a long shot, so why not meet it in the middle with technology? There are bionic limbs for amputees that can be controlled by their own muscles! That's crazy! Imagine if we could go a little deeper and do something similar for those who have been paralyzed? Like, I feel as though it is possible, even in the near future and maybe I could be the one to solve it (by being able to pay for my education once I get into one of my 4-year universities of choice). My idea is to connect something almost like a web of wires between the paralyzed limb(s) up to the brain or even just a headset. From what I know, the brain controls basically literally everything. From something else I know, there's a such thing called a head-mouse which allows a way for people with locked-in syndrome to communicate with people. If it's possible to allow eye movements and spikes in the brain to move a cursor on a screen, how far are we really from creating a way to let spikes in the brain move their limbs again? The way our body moves already is just by essentially a natural web of "wires." These "wires" could potentially be artificially recreated (or regrown by using stem cells but that's another idea) and then connected to the frontal lobe where movement is controlled. The head-mouse is a headset that uses a little movement from the brain and eyes, implementing this idea to use movement in the brain to control limb movement may not be as far off as we think. Anyway, that's just one of my ideas! I think it's really important to look more into problems that have existed since the beginning of ages and find ways to use new age technology to fix these issues.

$1,000 is a lot of cash, but it's also just enough to cover tuition for at least one more year. As a college student, my tuition suddenly exceeded from $40 a semester to $500. It doesn't seem like a lot, but with it suddenly coming at me and me being the provider of my education since FAFSA didn't work well for me, I would love to be able to just pay this upcoming year off with no worries. There are more thing I'd have to pay off, though. Like textbooks and a fee for access codes with a particular website my school uses. We use a website called Knewton Alta, honestly, such a blessing of a website it has helped me so much and you can always go back and relearn the material. Issue is it's $42 per class, and that's $42 I don't just "have." I'd also probably use some of the money on food. Though I don't live too horribly and I appreciate how much I have especially compared to others, eating frozen and prepackaged meals isn't what I want. I love eating freshly made food and love to cook! Something about eating freshly made chicken and pepper sandos (I learned the recipe off of Hello Fresh lol) for breakfast as a college student makes me feel couture even when the prices are not! And breakfast is the most important meal of the day!
