WinnerBio
My name is Evelyn Lucia Marquez and I am a student who strives to find her purpose in the arts. I love art, music, and theater. One of the main reasons I chose to pursue photography because I would love to capture moments in all of these art forms. Graphic design is also my main career choice because of how closely I work with photography. Although as a young girl I want to pursue a career is musical theater, I ultimately came to find I enjoyed photography and art more. One of my goals in life is to be able to travel to Paris and photograph the architecture, art forms, and tourist attractions there. I hope to become a better person through my career choices.

Chappell Roan Superfan Scholarship
WinnerIf there is something the world lacks, it's queer media. Specifically, queer media created by queer people. Growing up in a conservative home with limited access to queer representation, it was hard to discover who I was. I didn't realize I was a lesbian until I was 15, after dating a guy whom I thought I had a romantic crush on. Listening to Chappell Roan and seeing someone out there who is queer like me creating music for queer folk was enlightening and heartwarming. Chappell Roan was a door I was begging to have open. Having lyrics I can relate to without translating them in my head was emotional. I could instantly relate to what was being sung, and I felt happy. On top of that, Chappell Roan's stardom meant queer people could make it on the charts regardless of their sexual orientation. I also respect her political views and how she often keeps to herself. I have to interrupt the flow of the essay to emphasize my love for Chappell Roan. At the moment I am writing this, I am currently listening to her latest single "The Subway," which was released mere minutes ago. Circling back to her political views, she often kept to herself and has stated she would not be one to lead people toward a decision. She advocated for people to choose on their own while also still being vocal about holding politicians accountable.
Chappell Roan is my drive to Hollywood. As a young girl, I dreamed of performing on a stage. As I discovered my identity, I realized how slim my chances of making it big were based on who I loved. Seeing not only a lesbian, but a drag performer, on stage with millions of fans watching, gives me hope to become as big as she is. Queer representation is more important now than ever. With the rise of conservatism, Chappell Roan is one of the few big stars we can trust to create a path for those after her. I will forever advocate for Chappell Roan as she is one of the few queer representatives we have. I can only hope many look to her and see how her presence is important to the LGBTQ+ community and become as bold as she is.

The world's views can be versatile, much like the lens of a camera. Every time I pick up my camera, I don't just want to see the world around me, but the world it could be. As a photographer, it is my job to see the potential a scene holds and the best way to use it. As a video editor, I must piece together fragments of a shot to convey the story. As an artist, I must use my creativity in a way others couldn't. There are many other words I could use to describe who I am, but none could fully capture what I dream to achieve with my skills. Creativity and compassion flow through my veins like the water flows through a river. They're essential to who I am, and they push me toward my goals. To have the chance to create a movie that encompasses how I feel is a dream I would love to achieve in my lifetime. Movies and music are essential media that help push narratives to open people's eyes. That's what I want with my movies and my stories.
I have always dreamed of becoming an actress; however, I quickly realized how camera-shy I was as a kid. I joined a drama club in middle school and fell in love with acting, but I couldn't fully push myself out of my shell. I later learned I loved video editing and filming. Somehow, the movie industry was pulling me in, regardless of whether it was in front of or behind the camera. I began to dream of telling stories that resonated with others, like the silly rom-coms I loved or the found family dynamics that had me sobbing at two in the morning. I wanted to connect the world with happy endings that induced hope and kindness. I grew up with movies that explored what would happen if the world were torn apart, but hardly any about the world coming together. I realized the world hardly had anything to enjoy together. Over the summer, movies that bring the world together have become more common, and I wish to add to those movies.
There's a story I dream of telling. The story of a girl who must, against all odds, unite the world before it consumes itself in darkness. She realizes the people around her aren't meant for her and in the journey of connecting with the world, she must also connect with herself. She has to understand what's inside of her before she understands what's around her. Magic was always known to fix her problems, but when her problems stem from within her and have no easy fix, she becomes lost and alone. Slowly, she realizes there was more beyond her reach due to how restrictive she was of herself. That's how I want to connect the world: understanding oneself to understand the person next to you.
The reason I'm going to study film is not only because I love it with my whole being, but also because I know how important film is to the world. The world is reflected in these movies and TV shows. When there is hope within entertainment, there is hope around the world. I remember sitting and watching James Gunn's Superman and seeing our world in their fictional one. I could see how important this one figure was to their world. I want to create those kinds of figures in my stories to unite the world. Nothing would bring me more joy than two children becoming friends because a movie I created was their favorite thing in the "whole wide universe," as they would often say. To create something that evokes joy, sadness, anger, frustration, or even embarrassment means having made something that was human. I want the world to see how human we all are, and that is what I believe being a true artist is: being human.
