Women’s empowerment has always been important to me because I believe every girl should feel confident, capable, and worthy of being heard. Over the years, I have tried to be the kind of person who encourages other girls to believe in themselves, speak up, and not be afraid to take up space. As a recent high school graduate, I have seen how easy it is for girls to doubt themselves because of pressure, comparison, or the opinions of others. I want to be part of the generation that reminds women that our voices matter and that we do not have to shrink ourselves to make other people comfortable. One of the biggest ways I have made an impact on women’s empowerment is through cheerleading and coaching younger girls. I was a cheerleader for four years, a varsity cheerleader for two, and I served as a captain at Westlake High School. Being in that role taught me that leadership is not just about being in charge; it is about lifting other people up. I also coached younger cheerleaders at I Am Charde Tumbling Studio, which gave me the chance to pour confidence into girls who were still learning how to believe in themselves. I remember one young girl, Crystal who was nervous to try out because she kept saying she was not good enough. I made it my job to remind her that she belonged there just as much as anyone else. Watching her begin to smile, speak louder, and trust herself showed me how powerful encouragement can be. My passion for women’s empowerment also comes from my own life. Growing up, I learned from my mother, grandmother and aunt that strength does not always look loud or perfect. Sometimes strength looks like showing up, pushing through pain, and still helping others. Losing my brother made me understand how fragile life can be, and it pushed me to live with purpose. It taught me that I want to use my life to make others feel supported, especially young women who may feel overlooked or unsure of themselves. I want them to know they can turn their pain into purpose too. As I move into adulthood, I plan to continue supporting women through my education, career, and everyday actions. I will study nursing at Southern University and work in Labor and Delivery, where I can care for mothers during one of the most important moments in their lives. To me, empowering women means helping them feel respected, informed, and strong. Whether I am coaching, comforting, leading, or caring for patients, I want to be a positive example of what women can do when they are supported and believed in. My goal is to keep creating spaces where women feel seen, valued, and empowered to become their best selves.

I have decided to pursue a career in nursing because I am passionate about helping others during some of the most important and vulnerable moments of their lives. Nursing combines compassion, critical thinking, and hands-on care, which are qualities that I value and hope to strengthen throughout my career. I have always been drawn to healthcare because it offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives every day. Whether it is providing comfort, advocating for patients, or assisting in life-changing medical situations, nurses play a vital role in healthcare, and I want to be a part of that impact. My interest in nursing grew through my experiences in my high school’s healthcare pathway program. Through classroom instruction, skills training, and exposure to healthcare environments, I gained a deeper understanding of the responsibilities and importance of nurses. These experiences showed me that nursing is not just about treating illnesses; it is about caring for people as individuals and helping them navigate challenging situations with dignity and support. Learning about patient care, communication, and medical procedures strengthened my desire to pursue a career in the field. I am especially interested in becoming a labor and delivery nurse. The idea of supporting mothers and families during the birth of a child is both exciting and rewarding to me. Labor and delivery nurses are present during one of the most memorable moments in a family’s life, and they provide essential care, guidance, and reassurance throughout the process. I admire their ability to remain calm under pressure while offering both emotional and physical support. Being able to help welcome new life into the world and contribute to positive birth experiences is something that inspires me and motivates me to work hard toward my goals. In addition to my educational experiences, I have been inspired by the nurses I have encountered throughout my life. Their professionalism, compassion, and dedication have left a lasting impression on me. I have seen how nurses build trust with patients, advocate for their needs, and provide comfort during difficult circumstances. Their ability to combine medical knowledge with genuine care is something I deeply respect and hope to emulate in my own career. Pursuing a nursing degree will allow me to continue developing the skills and knowledge necessary to serve others effectively. I understand that nursing requires hard work, commitment, and lifelong learning, and I am prepared to embrace those challenges. My goal is to become a skilled and compassionate nurse who positively impacts the lives of patients and families while contributing to the healthcare profession. Receiving this scholarship would help me continue pursuing that goal and bring me one step closer to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I found out about this scholarship through my school and scholarship search opportunities.

I have always been drawn to helping others, and nursing provides a unique way to support people during some of the most important and challenging moments of their lives. What especially interests me about the profession is the ability to build relationships with patients while using critical thinking and medical knowledge to provide quality care. My long-term goal is to become a labor and delivery nurse because I am passionate about supporting mothers and their families during the childbirth process. Being able to care for patients during such a significant and memorable experience is something I find both rewarding and inspiring. My goals for a successful career include earning my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), becoming a registered nurse, and gaining experience in labor and delivery. I hope to work in a healthcare environment where I can continue learning, developing my clinical skills, and advocating for my patients. In the future, I would like to be known as a nurse who is compassionate, dependable, and dedicated to providing excellent care. I also hope to serve as a positive role model for others who are interested in pursuing careers in healthcare. To help me achieve these goals, I have taken advantage of opportunities available through my healthcare pathway. Through my coursework and hands-on learning experiences, I have gained a better understanding of the healthcare field and the responsibilities of medical professionals. These experiences have helped me develop important skills such as communication, teamwork, professionalism, and attention to detail. They have also confirmed that nursing is the career path I want to pursue. One of my greatest accomplishments has been my commitment to preparing for a future in healthcare while balancing my academic responsibilities. Completing healthcare-related courses and participating in career-focused learning opportunities have strengthened my confidence and motivation. Each experience has helped me build a strong foundation for success in nursing school and beyond. While I am still in the process of gaining professional medical experience, my healthcare education has provided valuable exposure to the field. Through clinical observations, healthcare pathway activities, and interactions with healthcare professionals, I have learned more about patient care and the importance of compassion in medicine. These experiences have reinforced my passion for nursing and have motivated me to continue working toward my goal of becoming a labor and delivery nurse. I am excited to continue learning, growing, and making a positive impact on the lives of others through a career in nursing.

My father, Tony Marcus, has played a major role in shaping both my educational journey and my long-term goals. His service in the Navy taught him discipline, resilience, leadership, and the importance of commitment. Those same qualities have influenced the way I approach school, responsibilities, and my future career as a Labor and Delivery Nurse. Watching him serve his country and later build his own business, SC House of Wings, showed me that success comes from hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance. His journey has inspired me to believe that with determination and faith, I can reach my own goals while also serving others. My father’s entrepreneurial journey has especially inspired me because it showed me that leadership does not end when military service ends. After serving in the Navy, he took the values he learned in the military and applied them to business ownership. Building and running SC House of Wings during the pandemic required courage, patience, and the ability to overcome challenges. Seeing him create something of his own taught me that leadership can be expressed in many ways, whether through military service, business, or community impact. It has motivated me to pursue a career in nursing, where I can use compassion, responsibility, and leadership to care for others and make a difference in people’s lives. His example has also influenced how I view education. I understand that school is not just about earning good grades; it is preparation for a greater purpose. Because of my father’s example, I have learned to stay focused, work hard, and value every opportunity in front of me. His military background showed me the importance of structure and discipline, which has helped me stay committed to my academic goals. Even when school becomes stressful, I remind myself that consistency and effort matter. His journey has pushed me to keep working toward excellence because I know my education will help me build the future I want. My father’s military service has impacted my educational journey in many ways. It has taught me to be respectful, organized, and resilient in the face of challenges. Growing up with a parent who served in the Navy gave me a strong example of sacrifice and responsibility. I have learned that success often requires putting in effort even when no one is watching. That lesson has helped me remain motivated in the classroom and focused on my goals, especially as I prepare for college and a future in nursing. Overall, my father’s service and entrepreneurship have inspired me to dream bigger and work harder. He has shown me that with discipline, faith, and determination, it is possible to serve others, overcome obstacles, and build something meaningful. His journey continues to motivate me as I pursue my education and prepare for a career where I can make a lasting impact in the lives of others.

I am passionate about nursing because it gives me the opportunity to care for people during some of the most vulnerable and meaningful moments of their lives. Nursing is more than a career to me; it is a calling rooted in compassion, service, and the desire to make others feel safe, supported, and understood. I have always been drawn to helping people, but my passion for nursing became even stronger because of my personal experiences with loss and my desire to turn pain into purpose. Losing my brother immediately after childbirth helped me understand how fragile life can be and how important skilled, compassionate care is for families. That experience made nursing feel deeply personal to me. What I hope to get out of my career as a nurse is the ability to make a real difference in people’s lives every day. I want to grow into a knowledgeable, confident, and compassionate professional who can provide excellent care while also offering encouragement and comfort. I hope nursing will allow me to learn constantly, serve others with purpose, and build a career that is both meaningful and impactful. For me, success as a nurse will not only be measured by professional growth, but also by the trust I build with patients and the comfort I bring to families during difficult times. The area of nursing I hope to enter is Labor and Delivery. I am especially interested in this specialty because it combines medical skill with emotional support, and it allows nurses to care for mothers and babies during one of the most important moments in life. Labor and Delivery requires patience, quick thinking, communication, and compassion, all qualities I value and want to continue strengthening. I want to be the kind of nurse who helps mothers feel calm, respected, and empowered while supporting safe and healthy births. In my specialty, I hope to make an impact by providing care that goes beyond the clinical side. I want to be known as someone who offers the human touch, reassuring patients, listening to their concerns, and helping families feel supported throughout the birthing process. I also hope to advocate for better maternal care, especially for women in underserved communities who may face barriers to healthcare. I want to contribute to a healthcare environment where every mother feels valued and every baby is welcomed with the highest level of care. Ultimately, I hope my career in nursing will allow me to combine my compassion, strength, and dedication to service in a way that changes lives. Labor and Delivery nursing is where I believe I can make the greatest difference, and I am excited to grow into a nurse who serves with excellence, empathy, and purpose.

One of the most powerful examples of compassion I have personally witnessed happened during my summer internship in the Grady Healthcare Teen Experience and Leadership program. I was shadowing nurses in the Labor and Delivery unit when I saw a young mother, barely 18, arrive in distress. She was in active labor, scared and alone—her family couldn't make it due to transportation issues, and she was overwhelmed by pain and fear. The nurse, Ms. Rodriguez, immediately knelt beside her bed, held her hand, and said, "You're not alone in this. I'm right here with you, and we're going to get through it together." What struck me most was how Ms. Rodriguez didn't just focus on the medical tasks. She listened as the mother shared her anxieties about becoming a parent so young, fears of not being ready, and worries about her baby's health. Instead of rushing through protocols, the nurse paused to explain every step in simple terms, coached her through breathing exercises, and even hummed a soft lullaby during contractions to help her relax. When the mother's water broke unexpectedly, Ms. Rodriguez stayed calm, reassured her it was normal, and wiped away her tears while calling for the team. That human touch—a gentle squeeze, eye contact, a warm smile—turned panic into partnership. The delivery was challenging but successful; a healthy baby girl arrived crying loudly. Ms. Rodriguez placed the baby on her mother's chest, skin-to-skin, and stayed until the family arrived, helping them bond. The new mom later said, "You made me feel like I could do this." Witnessing this profoundly affected me. As someone who lost my older brother immediately after a premature birth, I know the devastation when compassion is absent during those fragile moments. Seeing Ms. Rodriguez embody empathy reminded me why I want to be a Labor and Delivery nurse: to provide not just clinical care, but the emotional support that heals families. It reinforced my own commitment to empathy, my strongest trait, and motivated me to channel personal pain into purpose. That day, I saw compassion as a bridge—connecting fear to strength, isolation to community. It deepened my commitment to serve with the same heart, ensuring no mother feels alone. In my cheer coaching and community service with Every Girl Shines, I now prioritize that same listening and encouragement. This experience didn't just inspire me; it solidified my path, showing how one person's kindness can change lives forever.

Going to college means more to me than earning a degree. It represents opportunity, growth, independence, and the chance to build a better future for myself, my family, and my community. As the first step toward my career goals, college is where I will gain the knowledge, discipline, and confidence I need to become the nurse I have always dreamed of becoming. It is also a place where I will continue learning who I am, what I stand for, and how I can use my gifts to help others. For me, college is a path toward purpose. I plan to major in Nursing because I want to become a Labor and Delivery nurse and support mothers and babies during one of the most important moments of their lives. That goal is deeply personal to me because my parents lost my older brother immediately after childbirth. That loss showed me how fragile life can be and how important compassionate, skilled healthcare is for families. It gave me a reason to turn pain into purpose and pushed me to pursue a career where I can make a real difference. While in college, I want to do more than pass classes. I want to fully commit myself to learning, growing, and preparing for a career that will allow me to serve others. I want to strengthen my academic skills, build strong relationships with professors and mentors, and take advantage of every opportunity to gain experience in healthcare. I also want to continue developing as a leader through involvement in campus and community activities. The scholarship I am applying for would help me stay focused on my education by reducing financial stress and allowing me to concentrate more fully on my studies and future. What I am trying to accomplish goes beyond personal success. I want to honor my family, especially the loved ones I have lost, by becoming someone who brings hope, care, and support to others. I want to give back to my community by using my education to help families, educate mothers, and encourage others who are facing challenges of their own. In five years, I hope to be working as a skilled and compassionate nurse, making my family proud, and setting an example for younger students who may one day follow a similar path. To me, college is the bridge between where I am now and the future I am working hard to build. It is where I will transform my goals into reality and prepare myself to serve with compassion, leadership, and purpose.

One of the hardest challenges I have faced was losing my older brother immediately after childbirth. That loss affected me deeply because it was not only a family tragedy, but also a moment that shaped the way I view life, healthcare, and the importance of compassion. Even though I was young, I grew up knowing that this loss was a part of my story, and it created moments of sadness and reflection that stayed with me over time. This experience was especially difficult because it made me think about how fragile life can be and how important it is for families to receive strong support during childbirth. At times, I felt overwhelmed by the emotional weight of that loss, and it became harder to stay fully focused. However, instead of allowing that pain to stop me, I used it as motivation to keep moving forward. It helped me develop resilience and taught me to appreciate the people around me even more. Through this experience, I learned that challenges do not have to define you—they can shape your purpose. I learned the value of empathy, patience, and strength, and I came to understand that pain can be turned into purpose when you choose to keep going. This loss also helped me realize that I want to become a Labor and Delivery nurse so I can support mothers and babies during some of the most important moments of their lives. What I learned most from this experience is that even when life brings disappointment or heartbreak, I still have the ability to stay committed to my goals. It taught me to be stronger, more compassionate, and more determined to make a difference in the lives of others.

My extracurricular activities have helped shape me into someone who values service, leadership, and community impact. One of the most meaningful activities I have participated in is Every Girl Shines, where the focus is on serving the community and empowering young women to find confidence in themselves. Through this experience, I have learned that community service is not just about helping people in the moment, but about encouraging them to see their own value and potential. I have also been involved in Women of Westlake and Chosen Club, which helped me stay connected to leadership, teamwork, and giving back in positive ways. Another important part of my community involvement has been working as a cheer coach at I Am Charde, where I teach young girls the importance of training, fitness, and teamwork. This role has been especially meaningful because it allows me to mentor younger students and help them build discipline, confidence, and a strong work ethic. I see this as a form of service because I am helping shape not only their athletic skills, but also their character and self-esteem. My experience as a cheerleader and cheer captain has also taught me how important encouragement and example-setting are when working with others. My passion for service is also deeply personal. I lost my older brother immediately after childbirth, and that loss changed the way I see healthcare and community support. It made me realize how important compassionate care is for mothers and babies, and it gave me a deeper commitment to becoming a Labor and Delivery nurse. That experience motivates me to serve others with empathy and purpose, because I know firsthand how much families need support during vulnerable moments. I am also fully committed to completing my education and using every opportunity I am given to grow. Receiving this scholarship would not only help me achieve my academic goals, but it would also reduce financial stress and allow me to focus more fully on my studies, service, and future career. I want to make my family proud and use my education to create a better future for them and for my community. For future generations, I hope to help build a community that is stronger, healthier, and more united. I want to continue mentoring young people, supporting women, and using my nursing career to make a lasting impact. My goal is to serve others with compassion, honor my family’s experiences, and show that with support and determination, it is possible to turn pain into purpose.

My inspiration for nursing comes from my desire to help people and make a real difference in their lives. I have always been the type of person who wants others to feel supported, understood, and cared for, especially during difficult times. Nursing is the career that best matches those values because it allows me to serve others in a meaningful way every day. I want to be someone patients can trust, someone who listens carefully, shows compassion, and gives the kind of care that helps people feel more comfortable and hopeful. What draws me to nursing most is the opportunity to impact lives through both skill and kindness. I know that nursing is not just about medical knowledge, but also about patience, communication, teamwork, and empathy. These are qualities I work to show in my own life, and I want to continue developing them as I prepare for my future career. Whether I am helping someone through a health challenge or offering encouragement during a stressful time, I want people to feel like they are not alone. My goal is to become a labor and delivery nurse who makes mothers feel respected and valued. I want to serve others with dedication and professionalism while also bringing compassion to everything I do. Nursing is more than a career choice for me — it is a calling that reflects who I am and the kind of person I want to become. “Human touch” means more than physical contact to me. It means showing compassion, kindness, patience, and genuine care in a way that helps another person feel safe, respected, and understood. It is the personal connection that reminds someone they are not just a patient, but a whole person with emotions, fears, and needs. Human touch can be as simple as a reassuring smile, a calm voice, holding a hand, or taking the time to explain something clearly. It is about making someone feel comforted and valued during a vulnerable moment. As a labor and delivery nurse, human touch can have a powerful impact on patient care because childbirth is both physically demanding and emotionally intense. Many patients may feel anxious, scared, overwhelmed, or in pain. A nurse who uses human touch effectively can help reduce that stress by offering reassurance and emotional support. Sometimes, a gentle hand on the shoulder, helping a patient breathe through a contraction, or speaking in a calming tone can make a difficult moment feel more manageable. These small acts can build trust and create a sense of security. Human touch also helps strengthen the relationship between the nurse and the patient. In labor and delivery, trust is extremely important because patients need to feel confident that their nurse is attentive, supportive, and present. When a nurse shows empathy and care, patients are more likely to feel comfortable asking questions, expressing concerns, and following guidance. This can improve communication and help the nurse provide better care overall. In addition, human touch can positively influence the birth experience for both the mother and the family. Labor is a life-changing moment, and the way a nurse treats a patient can leave a lasting impression. A nurse who brings warmth, compassion, and kindness into the room can help create a more peaceful and encouraging environment. To me, human touch is one of the most important parts of nursing because it connects skill with compassion and turns care into something truly meaningful.
