At 18 years old, I made a decision that changed the course of my life. Although I tested below the legal blood alcohol limit, I was under the age of 21, and my state has a zero-tolerance law for underage drinking and driving. As a result, I was convicted of a DUI. At the time, I did not fully understand how one poor decision could affect not only my future but also the people who cared about me. The consequences of a DUI extend far beyond fines, court appearances, and the loss of driving privileges. For many people, a DUI can lead to injuries or the loss of innocent lives. Even when no one is physically harmed, the emotional and financial impact can be significant. Families are left worrying about their loved ones, friendships can be strained, and future opportunities may disappear. In my case, my conviction forced me to give up my dream of entering a Porsche technician program because I was unable to meet the program's requirements after losing my license. It was one of the most difficult moments of my life, and for a while, I believed my dream of working in the automotive industry was over. Looking back, I realize there were several strategies that could have prevented my mistake. Calling a family member, asking a sober friend for a ride, using a rideshare service, or simply staying where I was until I was completely sober would have been far better choices. Today, those options are more accessible than ever, making it easier to avoid getting behind the wheel after drinking. Education is also an important part of prevention. Young drivers need to understand that laws such as zero tolerance exist for a reason and that even one drink can have life-changing consequences if you are under 21. A DUI also affects the people left behind. Parents often experience disappointment, fear, and financial hardship as they help their children navigate legal consequences. Friends may lose trust, employers may question someone's judgment, and communities bear the costs associated with impaired driving. In cases where a DUI results in injury or death, families are left grieving forever. One person's decision can permanently change countless lives. Although I cannot change the mistake I made, I can choose what I do afterward. Rather than allowing my DUI to define me, I used it as motivation to work harder and make better decisions. I found a different path into the automotive industry, earning my Automotive and EV Technology degree with a BMW specialization and continuing my education in motorsports. While my original plan changed, my passion for the automotive field never disappeared. My experience taught me that mistakes have consequences, but they can also become opportunities for growth if we take responsibility and learn from them. I hope others, especially young drivers, recognize that no destination is worth risking their future or the lives of others. One responsible decision can prevent years of regret, and one mistake should never stop someone from becoming a better person.

My path toward automotive repair education started long before I ever stepped into a classroom. From a young age, I was always drawn to how vehicles worked rather than just how they looked. Over time, I realized I didn’t just want to be around cars—I wanted to build a career in the automotive industry. That passion led me to pursue formal training in automotive technology, beginning with my occupational associate degree in Automotive and EV Technology with a specialization in BMW systems. Through this program, I gained hands-on experience in engine rebuilding, diagnostics, precision measurement, and electrical systems. I learned that automotive repair is not just about replacing parts, but understanding why something failed in the first place. It requires patience, discipline, and attention to detail, because even the smallest mistake can affect safety and performance. I developed a strong foundation in both mechanical and electrical systems, which helped me grow more confident in diagnosing and repairing complex issues. Wanting to continue building on that foundation, I chose to further my education at UTI’s NASCAR program in Mooresville. This next step is helping me expand into performance and motorsports-based training, including race preparation, high-performance systems, fabrication, and fast-paced problem solving. The environment has pushed me to work under pressure and think critically, especially when timing and precision matter. My goal is to take the skills I am learning in both programs and apply them to a career in professional motorsports, ideally working with an IMSA team where teamwork, efficiency, and accuracy are essential. One of the biggest obstacles I am working to overcome is the financial burden of continuing my education. Tuition, tools, and living expenses add up quickly, and I have had to be very intentional about managing costs while staying focused on my training. My family has also made sacrifices to help support my education, but I continue to take responsibility for as much of my expenses as possible. Balancing financial pressure with a demanding technical program has not been easy, but it has strengthened my determination to succeed in this field. My long-term goal is to build a career in the automotive repair and motorsports industry. I want to work in a high-performance environment where I can continue developing my technical skills while contributing to a team that values precision and reliability. Eventually, I also hope to open my own performance or repair shop, where I can combine my passion for vehicles with high-quality customer service and trusted workmanship. Receiving the Autel Awarding Excellence Scholarship would make a meaningful impact on my education and career path. It would help reduce the financial stress of continuing my training, allowing me to focus more fully on developing my skills and completing my program.
