Hello, my name is Evalyn Rose Nunez. I am 18 years old, half-Hispanic, the eldest of seven siblings, and a senior at Adrian High School in Adrian, Oregon. I am an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where I participate in Wednesday youth group activities and service projects. Currently, I am learning Spanish so that I can communicate with my family on my father’s side. The majority of them only speak Spanish. I hope that as I try to learn the language I can communicate with them and develop a deeper relationship with them. I enjoy being outside, working on my grandparents' farm, traveling, and painting. Since starting High School, I've been determined to succeed, keeping my GPA over 3.5 while receiving my 3G certification in welding and working part-time at a local fast-food restaurant. As a CSO I have always loved STEAM and I would say the Engineering part of STEAM has always interested me the most. That's why I decided I wanted to learn how to weld. I chose to learn in the welding program at my school where I am currently the only female welder. While that has been a struggle at times, I am very proud of the welding skills I have learned and am proud that I can show other women that they can be involved in programs in which females have been historically underrepresented. I participate in organizations such as FFA (Future Farmers of America), FCA (Fellow Christian Athletes), and CSO (Chief Science Officers). I am also active in sports including Cross Country, Softball, and Track and Field. After graduating from high school, I plan to attend Brigham Young University-Idaho in Rexburg, Idaho this fall. There I plan to major in Floral Design. I have chosen this major because I want to start my own business running a floral shop. It has been my dream job since I was little and the idea of being self-employed appeals to me greatly. In this career I hope I will one day be a successful entrepreneur, selling my bouquets and floral arrangements for weddings, parties, and other celebrations. This career excites me because there's risk and adventure, and I get to make my own business decisions; and be my own boss. As I follow my dream I want to show and inspire others and women especially that they too are capable of following their dreams. I've always been taught to work hard so I can get a job that makes a lot of money. But to me, if I'm going to work for most of my life until I retire, then I want a career that makes me happy to wake up to in the morning. Thank you for taking the time to review my application. I eagerly await your response.

For as long as I can remember I've always been fascinated with welding. So my freshman year of high school I took a welding class. I didn't know it at the time but welding would turn out to be my strongest skill and art form. Since then, I have seen myself improve and refine that skill. I managed to pass my 2G certification, planning on passing my 3G this year, earned college credits for welding, and made my first chair for my grandpa. That's when I realized not only could I use welding for art I could use it to help people. In my Junior year of high school, I helped people with my welding skills by making a shoe brush for my grandparents, reteaching the hitch of a friend's trailer, fixing tools, as well as making some weird art. My art form can make the world a better place because I can create and fix things with welding that not many art forms can such as tables, chairs, gates, and anything you can set your mind to.

    “The Office” Obsessed! Fan Scholarship
If there was one person I say I resonate most with in The Office it would have to be Pam Beesley. I resonate most with Pam because I relate with her in many ways. We both have artistic passions. Like Pam, I've always liked to draw but never really thought it would take me anywhere outside of just being a hobby. It wasn't until I put my artwork in my local art show that I realized my potential and that I could be a great artist. I have also experienced unhealthy relationships. Similar to Roy, my father was also lazy and my parents never seemed happy together. It wasn't until they divorced that things started to get better and my mom found her own Jim and it was the first time I've seen her and my family so happy. The show has had a big impact on my life from using Michels line, “That's what she said'' much more often than I should, wearing the Dunder Mifflin company logo t-shirt, I even have Dwights' beet farm on a t-shirt! I also used Michael's quote from “The Office season 7, episode 19, minute 14:45” as my senior quote. Because of The Office, I am who I am. Without the humor and carefree atmosphere of The Office while I was going through rough times in my life I don't think I would be the same person. I'm grateful that The Office was there for me when I needed to escape reality.

When I was in middle school I tried out a welding class for fun. I didn't know it at the time but welding would turn out to be my strongest skill and art form. Ever since I started that welding class for fun in middle school I saw myself improve and refine that skill. Last month I made my first chair and gifted it to my grandpa for his birthday. That's when I realized not only could I use welding for art I could use it to help people. In my Junior year of high school, I helped people with my welding skills by welding my mother’s hoe blade back on the beam and reteaching the hitch of a friend's trailer. My welding can make the world a better place because I can create and fix things with welding that not many art forms can such as tables, chairs, gates, and anything you can set your mind to. If I had an extra 24 hours in the day I would go back to where I spent most of my childhood at my grandparents’ farm. I would be helping my grandpa on the farm, irrigating, swathing hay, and poisoning gopher holes. When I wasn't working with my grandpa I would be spending time with my grandma just talking, learning a new knitting pattern, helping her with her garden, and taking care of her chickens. When I wasn’t with my grandparents I would be welding with my grandpa’s old World War II era Lincoln 300 amp Stick Arc welder (the same welder my great-grandpa used welding Navy ships such as the U.S.S Blue Ridge while serving in WWII) working on projects from my grandpas metal scrap. If I had an extra 24 hours in the day I would be there working, spending time with my grandparents, and doing what I love welding. I feel the most creative when I'm welding in the shop of my welding class. All the equipment and parts I could ever need are in there; it's like my playground. That's where I discovered my love for welding and accomplished most of the projects I mentioned earlier. When I am welding I feel like I'm achieving the fullest of my creative potential, I feel alive. When I weld I feel like I can make a difference in this world. I hope that as I keep pursuing this skill I may turn it into my future career.

On my 10th birthday, my aunt who inspired me to become a photographer gifted me her old Nikon digital camera. With that camera, I discovered I could express and capture my love for the environment through photography. Growing up on my grandparents’ farm in the countryside of eastern Oregon I loved being outside taking walks and exploring the vast prairie desert that surrounded my grandparents’ farm. With that old Nikon camera I captured some of the things I loved most about the environment around me and through photography I was able to capture a snapshot of nature for a lifetime. Over time I perfected my photography skills and compiled my portfolio below of some of my best and favorite photos that capture the essence and sheer beauty of nature and its creatures that surround me. Of the three photos I submitted in my portfolio below one of the photos captures a rock formation taken on a trip my and my family took to the stunning Bryce Canyon National Park in southern Utah. The Martian-like landscape inspired me to capture this larger-than-life rock formation that moved me. The second photo I submitted is a picture of the Owyhee River and its very striking features. On the way back from a tubing trip at the Owyhee reservoir I shot this almost valiant feeling, untouched by man that nature seemed to be expressing. The last and my favorite photo I captured was in the lavender bush in my backyard. Seeing all the bees pollinating in my moms’ garden I caught this surreal image of two determined bees. I hope you enjoy my portfolio as much as I did creating it.
    Anime Enthusiast Scholarship
Ever since I watched Princess Mononoke a year ago I was hooked by its themes of development versus preservation and environmentalism.”It portrays the very beginnings of the seemingly insoluble conflict between the natural world and modern industrial civilization." -Hayao Miyazaki One of the things I love most about the movie is unlike other anime films and movies there is no clear good and evil conflict. It's not a simplistic tale of good and evil but a complex story of how humans, forest animals, and nature gods all fight for their share in the new emerging order. Another thing I loved about the movie was its traditional hand-drawn animation style. In my opinion, it has the most beautiful animation of all of Studio Ghibli's films with painted backdrops and the use of digitally composed 3D rendering into hand-drawn animation. The film's natural scenery is my favorite example of this. After looking into what inspired Miyazaki to create the film's natural scenery I found that he was inspired by his visits to the forests of Yakushima and the Shirakami-Sanchi mountains inspired by the environment of Princess Mononoke. This movie helped me grow a greater appreciation and respect for the natural world and inspired me to create landscape paintings from the prairie desert environment around me. Despite the complex characters, conflict, and beautiful animation in the anime film, Princess Mononoke, what truly captivates me most about this movie is that no matter how many times I rewatch this movie it still evokes the same emotions of sadness, horror, and happiness in me when I first watched it. This movie moves me the most in the fact that it had no filter on the horrors of war. This movie was the first animated movie I've seen to candidly show the horrors of war, with the battle scenes showing decapitation, dismemberment, and distorted bodies. It's the only movie I have seen that conveys all these different themes, emotions, and touching elements I haven't seen in any other movie or show explore.

My name is Evalyn Nunez and I am an acrylic painter. Ever since I got an acrylic painting set for my 8th birthday my love and passion for painting has grown and has become my primary art form as an artist. My favorite kinds of paintings and the main settings I paint in are landscapes. I've always enjoyed nature and have spent a lot of time in it growing up on my grandparents’ farm out in the countryside of eastern Oregon. Painting is how I express my love and interest in nature and its different ambiance. Through my landscape paintings, I hope to stir feelings of appreciation and love for nature in people. When people view my paintings I want them to see why we need to respect and revere the natural world around them. Like my paintings, nature should be viewed, not touched or disturbed. I decided to paint landscapes after seeing the effects of urban sprawl in my rural community. Through my paintings I want to raise awareness for the preservation of the beauty of the world around us and how we can protect it through our small actions. In the future, I envision my relationship with my artwork as having perfected my style and technique enough to have them shown in art galleries and maybe even creating commissioned paintings if I so desired. But most importantly I want to create artwork for me. I paint because I enjoy it, I love it. In the future, I hope I choose to keep painting because I enjoy doing it, not having to do it according to deadlines or for respect and appreciation from others. I don't want to be a slave to my creations and if it ever came to that then I would still paint but I would only paint things I want to paint. But who knows what the future will bring. Maybe I will enjoy making commissions at work or selling my paintings or maybe It will just be my hobby and I'll do with my creations as I wish, who knows. My landscape paintings are an expression of me and my opinions and values. I hope through my paintings they make people appreciate nature more and raise awareness to protect the world around us. If I decide to keep creating my artwork it'll be because I enjoy it not because other people enjoy seeing my artwork or for their appreciation and respect. I don't know what the future will hold for me as an artist but I do know that if I want to express myself whether it be through my paintings or any other art form I will.
Scholarship Institute’s Annual Women’s Leadership Scholarship
One way I have demonstrated leadership was by taking care of my siblings. Growing up as the oldest of five siblings, being a leader came naturally to me. My parents worked a lot to provide for me and my siblings so I would watch my siblings when they were gone. I would make meals and just hang out with them. Another way I have demonstrated leadership was by being the unofficial captain of my cross-country team. Being the oldest and one of the fastest people on the team I would lead exercises, encourage, and cheer my teammates on in their races and practice. Lastly, in my friend group, I am known as the person who sticks to their morals. While most of my friends cuss and like to start drama, most of the time I keep to myself, and because of my religious practices and my upbringing I never cuss in my regular conversation. Over time, I noticed my friends don't cuss as much and try not to start drama about people when they're around me. As one can see I am not the kind of leader that bosses or stresses people out. I've seen a lot of leaders in my life who have led this way and I've noticed that it only hurts those around them rather than helps them achieve a common goal. This is why in all of my leadership roles I try to refrain from this type of leadership and I try to inspire and listen to others’ opinions. In the future, I hope to achieve my dream of starting my own business through my leadership skills. Being a senior in high school I've seen so many people graduate from high school go into jobs or careers they hate. So I figured if I will be working until retirement then it should be a job that I wake up to every morning feeling happy and excited to go to work. So I took my love for gardening, floral design, and entrepreneurship to run a floral shop. What I like most about the idea is in running my own business I get to be my boss and hire or fire people as I wish while also getting to do what I am passionate about. After I get my degree in business at BYU Idaho and take all classes and degrees necessary I hope to graduate college with at least a bachelor's degree and achieve my dream of starting my own floral shop business. As I have demonstrated leadership skills throughout my life in my family, sports, and friend group I believe those experiences helped develop my leadership skills. In the future, I am confident that through my leadership skills and abilities, I can achieve all of my dreams and goals in life.

Ever since middle school I have participated in track and field. My events are the 3,000m, the 1,500m, and the 4x4 relay. Believe it or not, I love doing these events and have even gotten to the state championships in all of them. Now, as a senior in high school, one thing running long distances in track and field has taught me is discipline. Running long distances is more of a mental race than a physical one. It takes mental discipline to be able to run lap after lap without stopping. I have learned that discipline is the difference between running an ok race and a new personal best race. No one will make you run your best race or do anything for you, it's up to discipline yourself to run your best race or anything else in this life. This discipline has helped me not only in my running abilities but in my everyday life as well. For instance, at work, I have built the mental discipline to do work-related tasks instead of going on my phone when I'm bored which allowed me to get a raise. In my academic life, I have disciplined myself to study every night which caused me to have all A’s and a higher GPA. I learned that when I discipline myself in any aspect of my life I can accomplish any goal. Track and Field has taught me about myself that I am capable of much more than I think I am capable of. I have run races and won awards I never thought I was capable of accomplishing. Every time I finish a race I feel a great sense of accomplishment and pride knowing that I did that, I gave it my all, and win or lose, I finished that race, and that's more than a lot of people can say. Track and Field has allowed me to be confident in my abilities and talents and has taught me that I can do anything I put my mind to. I am passionate about track and field because it taught me about discipline and how important it is to not only sports but to my everyday life. It has taught me that I am capable of much more than I think and that with discipline I can accomplish anything I set my mind to accomplish. I am grateful for the experiences and lessons that track and field taught me because I will remember them for the rest of my life.
    “Stranger Things” Fanatic Scholarship
If I could choose three characters to fight a new supernatural villain from Stranger Things it would be a straightforward decision. The first character I would choose for my dream team is Eleven. Eleven is the strongest and only character with psychokinetic and telepathic powers that can single-handedly take down the supernatural villains of the past seasons. The second character I would choose would be Billie. Billie is the most physically strongest person without powers that would be efficient in fighting off supernatural villains as we saw him single-handedly fight off the Mind Flayer in season three to protect Eleven. The last person I would choose would be Max. Max's strengths lie in her intelligence and courage. For example, in season three after Billie viciously beats up Steve, Max courageously protects the group by stealing Billie's car and transporting the group into the underground tunnels. If I had to choose three characters to fight a new supernatural villain from Stranger Things this would hands down be my dream team. Without the skills of these three characters, their psychokinetic and telepathic powers, physical strength, and intellectual and courageous abilities they would be as good as dead against a new supernatural villain.
    Book Lovers Scholarship
If I could have everyone in the world read just one book it would have to be “Tuesdays with Morrie'' by Mitch Albom. It's a real-life story of the author, Mitch Albom, and his association with his old Sociology professor, Morrie Schwartz. In the book, Morrie Schwartz is dying from Lou Gehrig's disease and makes a series of visits with Mitch Albom every Tuesday. They spend 13 Tuesdays discussing life as his last day nears. In his teachings to Mitch in his 13 Tuesday visits, he changes his life with his simple and wise words about life. It's a book I think that everyone should read because Morrie’s teachings apply to each of us. He teaches us so much about what matters in life and how we can live it to the fullest. Most important of all, he teaches us how crucial love is in all of our lives. One of my favorite quotes from Morrie Schwartz says, “So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they're busy doing things they think are important. This is because they're chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote your-self to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” Whenever I'm away from the people I love or find myself hating others, or mindlessly scrolling on my phone I think of this quote and I try to be a little better every day. I think If everyone read this book it would change the world. I think it would at least cause people to consider what matters in their lives and whether the things they are chasing in their lives are important.

In the fall of 2024, I plan on attending BYU-Idaho, where I will be studying floral design. I have chosen this field to gain a better understanding of floristry for when I start my own floral shop. Since I was little I always loved going on walks in my grandparents’ quiet little farm in the countryside and picking wildflowers. Ever since then my love for arranging flowers has grown into so much more. In the summers I helped my mom’s friend with her flower business, “Willow Creek Blossoms” and grew a better understanding of how to start and grow my own floral business. When I graduate from high school and go to college I know I'll have the experience and business expertise that I need to someday start my own floral business. I've always wanted to have an entrepreneurial career because I've always hated the idea of some oppressive manager controlling my schedule. While I know that not all managers share these characteristics I've seen the effects of what an overbearing manager has on hard-working people like my parents who had to work graveyard shifts and the weekends to support me and my siblings. As an entrepreneur, I get to be my own boss free from an authoritative figure. I can control my own schedule, and workload, and am responsible for myself. Running my own business has been a dream of mine because of my grandpa. My grandpa is the most hardworking man I know. He worked most of his life working at Woodgrain, a seed company, and any work he could find to support my grandma, my mom, and her seven other siblings. He now runs his own farm selling alfalfa to other farms. He is what inspires me to work as hard as I can to achieve my dreams. What separates me from people who do not succeed in starting their own is my drive. I've had experience in the floral business, I know what takes and I’m willing to get there. I know that I can succeed in my business endeavors because I know that if I want it bad enough I can achieve it. In my 10-year goal plan, I plan on achieving my dream of starting up my own floral business, “Prairie Blooms”. I will be living close to my parents, have a nice house in the country, I will have graduated college, be married, and have a few kids. While this goal may seem overreaching to some, I am willing to work as hard as I can to achieve my dreams.

As far back as I can remember I was taught that if I trust in God He will guide me through all my trials and tribulations. It wasn't until my parents divorced that faith was really tested. At first, it was really hard but God against all my doubts made it better than I could have ever imagined. My mom remarried a good man, we live in a house I never thought we would be able to have in my wildest dreams, and I have a good relationship with my dad, my mom, and my stepdad. Another time God helped me in my life was when I started my senior year. I was feeling the heat of being a high school senior. I had some tough life decisions ahead of me, working a part-time job after school instead of participating in sports or extracurricular activities so I could save up money for college while helping my parents take care of my seven younger siblings. I was also afraid that I wouldn't be accepted into my dream school. But I've found that when I trust in God He takes away the fear in my life and He makes everything work out in His own way. Because of God, I've been able to save up money for college while investing in my retirement. I’ve been able to help take care of my siblings and I've had the best grades of my entire high school career. Because I'm not doing sports I'm less stressed and I've had time to apply to some scholarships and apply to my dream school. While I still haven't heard anything back I'm confident that I will get accepted and if not then it will be His will and He will have something else planned out for me. I've had a lot of thoughts on my future career but still haven't figured out which career I will be pursuing yet. I do know that God has blessed me with skills such as welding, the ability to connect with people, and creative skill sets that I will definitely further pursue and refine in my career. While I still don't know what that career will be, I have faith that God will guide me to the career that's perfect for me just like how he guided me through my parents’ divorce and through my tough decisions. Whenever I'm in tough times I remember that when I trust in God I can do all things and He will make everything better than I could ever imagine.
